Amazing tutotrial, thank you! Just a small tip: as you mentioned, when retiming an audio clip it gets distorted. That is because by default FCPX will remain the pitch. You can change that in the retiming menu. Especially for slow motion sound design thats incredibly usefull.

Dylan! This one was amazing. Thanks a lot! Btw. I am new to sound design and it’s workflow, so what’s confused me is the difference between surround and stereo when it comes to create a sound design portfolio. As I don’t have surround speakers (I have two yamaha monitor speakers), should I still go for surround? If yes why?
@dylanjohndickerson2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Fatih! I think it totally depends on the project. Unfortunately, most people just watch videos on their phone or computer speakers, but for those that listen to the videos with headphones, they'll notice a big difference between just stereo sound design and surround sound sound design. Even though most headphones don't work exactly like surround sound speakers do, changing the project to surround, selecting different pan modes, and adjusting the position of the sounds will absolutely make your sound environment sound immersive and all encompassing. So to answer your question, I would stick with stereo for most projects, but for your films or projects where you really want the sound design to stick out and sound immersive, go with surround sound. Does that answer your question?
@FatihVideographer2 жыл бұрын
@@dylanjohndickerson Thanks a lot Dylan! All clear now. For my sound design portfolio I'll go with surround as I am learning and experimenting with sound. Cheers

Is there any way in FCPX to play around with the levels of the sound in a clip? I did a lot of work in GarageBand and could put a dot anywhere on the audio line and even in several spots then drag up, increase, decrease, etc. I don't see how this can be done in iMovie or FCPX...and I missing something?
@dylanjohndickerson Жыл бұрын
Do you mean the different frequencies of a piece of audio? If so, then yes. Use 'channel EQ' which can be found in your effects folder.
@weemite Жыл бұрын
@@dylanjohndickerson I mean, that line that can increase or decrease the sound. In GarageBand you can place the cursor on a spot, even on multiple spots on the line, and drag up or down so the volume gently fades out

Hey Dylan, great tutorial! I've been in the business for 40 yrs, started editing tape to tape, 3/4 inch, and I'm still learning! I love the sound design. One question, if you are doing your mix in surround sound and your final ends up on KZbin or some place like that, do you export final product out of FCPX in stereo two channel? Is that the final work flow?
@dylanjohndickerson Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thanks so much! That's awesome to hear after all these years, you're still taking the time to learn new tricks. That's how it should be. I thought I mentioned what to do at the end of the tutorial, but if not, you'll need to export in ProRes Master I believe and then compress it using compressor so it's not an insanely massive file 😊 Just make sure you don't switch the mix back to stereo in Compressor.

Awesome video. I didn't realize the audio scope of my Final Cut Pro. Lots more to learn and grasp I see. I film ships coming to port and too often, even though I am using a top quality RODE microphone with a deadcat, I get too much wind noise which I cannot seem to get rid of while still hearing the engine sounds of the ship. Are you able to do a video on how to reduce wind noise or if not maybe to reply with a comment. I have also just subscribed and looking forward to learning more including the surround option.

when I use dual mono and have the pan mode to none, it seems to be so much quieter (than other modes) even with the same audio effects. Any idea why? The project is still in stereo. I am using the most up-to-date FCP too. I have my audio as loud as it goes before clipping and it just sounds quieter than when if click a surround sound mode I just realized.
@dylanjohndickerson4 ай бұрын
Ya for some reason this is a common occurrence and a friend of mine told me it's due to 'paning law' which is a recording and mixing principle that states that any signal of equal amplitude and phase that is played in both channels of a stereo system will increase in loudness up to 6.02 dBSPL, provided there is perfect response in the loudspeaker system and perfect acoustics in the room. So basically, I adjust my the volume of my audio whenever I switch to dual mono

Hi Dylan! One question again. How do we make audio sound as if it's far away? 😢
@dylanjohndickerson4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tshering! So in final cut, there’s a couple ways you can do that. You can add reverb to it or you can add a variety of pre-made reverb effects in the effects browser like ‘cathedral/modest cathedral/large room’. And maybe consider adding a slight ‘echo delay’ to the audio.

Love all your tutorials and have learned much - thank you, Dylan! Haven't finished watching this one yet, but I'm assuming your suggestion to listen with headphones is in order to appreciate the subtle effects you'll be demonstrating. My experience with editing while wearing headphones is that the resulting sound is not ideal for playback on a laptop, which is how most of our viewers see our videos. I'll be curious to learn what your experience has been and how a filmmaker can optimize audio for the best result in real-world environments. Keep up the great work...!
