Time Frames by Type of Film
Short films take 1 to 4 weeks. Shorter runtimes and fewer scenes allow for a quicker edit, typically taking around 1 to 4 weeks.
Feature-length indie films take 2 to 4 months. Limited resources and smaller teams can slow things down, though fewer complex effects help.
Feature-length studio films take 4 months to 1 year to edit. Larger budgets mean more detailed work, from VFX to sound design, resulting in longer editing times.
Blockbuster films take 6 months to 1 year. Blockbusters involve extensive special effects and multiple editing passes, often taking 6 months to over a year to complete.
Factors that impact editing time:
Film length. Short films take less time than feature-length films simply due to the reduced amount of footage to edit.
