Its so fascinating how after being widely recognized as a genius and a visionary, and creating visually stunning masterpieces as Vertigo and North By Northwest and being so polished and meticulous in the visual style, he completely changed his approach and became more “on the nose”, gritty, direct, and he removed his old aesthetic ornaments and created simpler plots, sober designs, everyday lighting, minimalist.

I've always loved Hitchcock. Family Plot is my favourite film and the casting, in my opinion, was just perfect. I can't imagine any other actor/actress in any of the roles. Great movie.

Family Plot is a film I saw as a child and it stuck with me until I watched it again in my 20’s. Harris was hilarious and makes the film for me. This and Frenzy are two of my favourite Hitchcock films.

Hitchcock said he saw Devane playing Robert Kennedy. If he's referring The Missiles of October, Devane was playing John F. Kennedy. Thinnes confronted Hitchcock in a restaurant about replacing him. Hitchcock ignored him and kept eating. It sounds like Thinnes had the last laugh.

Always loved Hitch & the unique brand of suspense that he brought to film. I just happened to take the Universal Studios tour in the summer of '75 & saw FP the following spring. Fun times!

Hitch, didn't exactly go out on a bang, but Barbara Harris' smile in2 the cameras at the film's end. Just signaled to the audience, ( in my mind.) That Hitch thought we are great, & he'll always love us. A message from the grave, (Uh,,,,pre-"the grave ") VERY, VERY HITCHCOCK !!!!!!

Sir Alfred going out with a whimper. The cast is great, the scenario is great, but execution is light weight. Just good enough to watch.

You know I loved Hitchcock, worshiped every film I ever saw of his. Then I saw Family Plot... I didn't enjoy it and that really baffled me. I thought I should enjoy it. But then I suppose when I watched a Hitchcock film I was always expecting to feel tense and unnerved. So it was probably the screwball comedy elements that confused me. By 1976 Hitchcock practically had his own sub-genre; problem being that if he made a film out of character then it was a bit like buying a ticket for a horror movie and seeing a comedy - you feel betrayed. I have actually seen the film three times by the way, I was determined to like it, but alas you can't really make yourself enjoy something just because its from one of your favourite filmmakers. I love that he was still working at the age of 76 though and was obviously just as competent as he'd ever been at it. Hats off to you Hitch!

Interesting what you said. Family plot & topaz are the only two films of Hitchcock I haven't seen. I feel I should though

@@garyclarke9685 I enjoyed Topaz, for what it's worth. Nowhere near the top tier of Hitchcock films in my opinion but a well-made film nonetheless.

Thank you, Jonathan, for reminding me about a really fun piece of movie making. It's been so long since I watched this (maybe twenty years) but it's time I enjoyed it again. The film has a really playful yet ominous flavor, something I believe would work really well in a television series today; not necessarily this story and these characters, but a tale with similar qualities, a sharp blend of suspense and laughs. The closest thing I've experienced to that is the F/X show "Fargo" ... but that doesn't quiet have enough comedy for my taste (although it is one powerhouse of a crime series).

I worked my way through a collection of Alfred Hitchcock films. A lot of his movies are reimagining of prior movies he made where he fixes the problems with the prior film. Watch Marnie and you'll see proto Psycho before it becomes a really stupid love story. North by Northwest is a streamlined version of Sabotage.

I know William Devane will always be Greg Summer in Knots landing which nothing wrong with that. William Devane could have become a Hollywood A-lister star, he has a pit of Jack Nicholson about him, but not as good. But William is a good actor.

Listening to this report, it made me think of people like Ebert who gave Hitch a pass on films like this simply because it was Hitch. In modern times I see that Stephen King has benefitted from this kind of grace starting shortly after the middle 80s. A look back at his catalog from the 1970s until then you see a talented writer taking the ideas of others and putting his own spin on them (well, enough of a spin so as not to be sued), but then, after his accident, where he was struck by a van while out walking, his imagination seems to have been lost. Since then his stories have been routine and while still showing a writing talent, they don't end, they just fizzle out. This has been noted even by critics who call it the 'Stephen King Ending Issue/Problem', but even this acknowledgement does not stop the same critics from full-throated recommendations of the work. Just as Ebert gave a full throated endorsement of this film. While at the same time admitting that it was not 'Classic' Hitch. He admitted his recommendation was based on the fact that it was a Hitch film. I say it is time to move beyond this. Let a new 'player' as Hitch called them, become Indiana Jones IF you simply must make new films. Clearly we learned Harrison is too old for the role when we cringed through the last Indy film. Let new, and talented people come in to direct, or to write or to perform in films, but base that entry into the system on their TALENT and not on the skin color or sex or if they are sleeping with men or women. Just MERIT. Losers need not apply.
