In further defense of Otto throwing Subaru off the cart, from Otto's perspective Subaru just started rambling about a girl who doesn't exist and then decked him before claiming he can attract the Whale. So Otto's mind is a bit broken, and he thinks he's facing a violent madman who the Whale is chasing. While we know what Subaru's on about and would take his side, Otto's actions aren't wrong from his perspective

Otto unintentionally saved Subaru in Episode 17, since the White Whale ended up not doing anything to Subaru. If Otto hadn’t pushed him off the carriage, Subaru would’ve joined Otto by being caught/killed by the Witch Cult. That push was the reason why Subaru was able to keep going until the end, despite the injuries. Also the fact that his ground dragon comes back for Subaru, meant Otto gained back his conscious after getting away from the White Whale offscreen, which leads me to believe that he told his ground dragon to find Subaru, as soon as he had encountered the Witch Cult while trying to go back for him. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I want more people to come and realize this.

In Episode 17, when Otto screams, “Die. Die so that I can live.” There’s such significant irony in that one line he said alone. Obviously, it makes sense for Otto to naturally say that, given the circumstances in episode 17, but think just for a moment. Subaru dies over and over again, so that the people around him, like Otto and others, can live/be saved.
