I was a cosmetic formulator for 6 years and I used a lot of TKB. Your video is spot on and excellent. A lot of formulators have been told and believe you 100% need fillers with some micas. You don't. It's not a secret, but a lot of us don't. You are right about the matte, although I'd use a different formula. I dye yarn now. I made soap too and with MS lye and shaky hands don't mix. Excellent video and 100% approved, but I'm no genius. :)

Thanks so much for this! I just wasted a whole bunch of shadows cause I added mostly the binding product to make it liquid and it never ever dried! So tip for people: make sure to add only a couple drops like you show here and use the alcohol to make it wet if you want it to be easier to mix, not the other way around.

@nifertiti83 NO. The ALCOHOL IS NOT THE MAGICAL STUFF! It DRIES THINGS OUT. The pressing binder is the things that makes everything bond together. As I mention in the video, the alcohol is simply there to help spread the binder around, and then it evaporates. It doesn't do ANYTHING except dry out the shadow you may have, and that's why it works well with the sticky binder.

@DesiDulce yes you can use refined coconut oil or jojoba oil, but keep in mind they can go rancid more quickly than the other type of mixing medium.

I use fractionated coconut oil & it has an almost forever shelf life. Will it still go rancid in the shadow? Also, could you explain your step by step process for pressing matte pigments, like the green oxide? I've tried several times & it always comes out hard as a rock w/ no color payoff. Pls & ty!

To be honest, I would always recommend adding even a SMALL amount of another blending mica or powder (you can find some that are practically transparent). If you just bind straight oxides you may end up with a very chalky and sometimes overly pigmented product (i.e can stain skin). I haven't been too successful with binding straight oxides, but you can try! :D

@@rintea8543 mica is shimmery (shiny) matte is just color no shine or shimmer. If you wanted you can even mix a little mica (shimmery shiny color) to your matte color for just a hint of shine. I personally think it's easiest to make a shimmer (shiny) eyeshadow with mica. I use alcohol, aloe and glycerin for my mixing binder. For an added benifits and creamy feel to the eyeshadow I add 2 to 3 drops of rose oil to the mix of my binder. So all you need is 3 ingredients other than the mica.

@sweetpuppy120489 no, I didn't--- I just pressed the into place FIRMLY. If you're using mica or something that is like a loose mineral, then you'll have to use a binder. The ones I used were (like the one I showed in the video) were more creamy in texture-- they were baked minerals--- and didn't need anything to add to make the product bind to itself. Hopefully that's clear enough.

It's confusing even to those of us who make our own makeup. Basically micas are a shimmery silicate based mineral that require some sort of base to adhere to your lid. They can be used alone but often result in heavy fallout. Pigments are made of iron oxide or other minerals that have been ground to a fine consistency and are matte. You can add mica to a pigment to add a little shimmer.
