32:16 I don’t think people are reading this verse right. She’s not talking about going back to school, she’s not talking about being in school - she’s fantasizing about going back to her high school REUNION with Harry on her arm. Can you imagine 2 mega stars walking in as the IT couple to end all IT couples in the universe??? THAT’S the suburban legend - the two of them together. I mean we STILL talk about Haylor today - Zach said in his reaction, Haylor is never over - them being together will never happen, and yet we still talk about it. Like an Urban Legend, but Haylor is a Suburban Legend. It makes total sense to me.

You are correct, I thought this was obvious too. And people who fully leave their suburban pasts behind tend not to attend their high school reunions because they have moved on, but Taylor and Harry can't move on due to their position in society. It's a much more interesting idea than they're giving it credit for.

That's a good theory and I think it's very true that both projects intersected with one another at some time, like making two drawings at once. There's a lot of production choice similarities between the deep cuts on Midnights (3AM included) and the 1989 vault re-recordings like how Suburban Legends' intro is like Mastermind and Say Don't Go reminds me of The Great War at certain points. I wouldn't be surprised if Jack and Taylor decided to rework the "original rejects" to make them more of a reflective/current version of Taylor.

About the midnights sound - i heard a theory that maybe she went in to the studio to re-record 1989 a while back and the sound they worked on resulted in a whole new album of ideas. So they decided to pause the 1989 rerelease and release midnights first. This would line up with the 1989 album being teased back in 2021 / early 2022 but then it went away and explain the crossovers in sound and subjects on Midnights and these vault tracks.

In "where do broken hearts go" by 1D (written by Harry) Harry adresses that love is something he didn't hear enough so it took him some time to figure out. Also you need to listen to "I love you" by Alex and Seirra, it's written by Harry using his registered psuedonym "Mick greenberg" which shows that he did say i love you to Taylor, but it was late. Also listen to "him" and "trouble" both are unreleased songs written about their situation. These songs will complete the storyline

You are right, Haylor will NEVER be over, but I think that is partly by design...a concious choice on both their parts. There will always be unfinished business and unanswered questions betwen them and as much as I too would like to tie Harry to a chair and ask him the questions...and Taylor would too...I think they both get so, so much musical inspiration from the what ifs of it all. They get to write coded songs in response to each other and forever imagine what could have been, or even what actually WAS, if the questions remain unanswered.

I am from the opinion that this was probably what she intended to be track 05, but because it also gives one too many hints about Harry, it ended up being traded for something more generalist, in the effort to make the album a "city album" for anyone to relate to. But the choice of the producer, the A-HA vibes, the ad libs, the word repetitions, the arrow to the heart of a true track five, the fact it could easily fit cronologically after _Out 😊f the woods_ , completing a trio with _Style_, it's all there my dudes 🔎

It's funny that in the AU where Blank Space was the vault track it would probably get the reverse reaction to Slut!. Instead of expecting bop and getting sad romance, people would speculate that it would be a sad, dreamy, romantic song based on the title and then it would've slapped us in the face as the satirical, funny BOP OF THE CENTURY that it was.

From the dynamics that she paints on the songs, I can see a lot of myself. Taylor wanted a lot of validation and Harry was the ultimate trophy. He was wanted by everybody, therefore if he chose her that would be the dream, also the image of the power couple and the fantasy must have also been really alluring. She must have felt his unavailability and felt like that was a challenge, that she could eventually get to him, the exact same mistake that I did. It gets to a point where you cant no longer pretend that their inconsistency and inability to commit, really commit, doesn't hurt. I also declared myself and got a lukewarm response and decided that a lack of a strong yes was enough.

"’Two Ghosts’ I wrote for the band, for Made in the AM. But the story was just a bit too personal. As I started opening up to write my more personal stuff, I just became aware of a piece of me going, I want to sing the whole thing." He put "Olivia" on the album. He gave "I Love You" away. I would encourage you two, and everyone here in the comment section, to go back and read the profile on Taylor in Vanity Fair from 2013. In it, there is a detailed timeline of the Haylor relationship. I know that’s from a single source (“a friend” Taylor apparently authorized to speak on it to the reporter) and sometimes reporters make inaccurate statements, but DAMN if it’s not juicy. I don’t know how the fandom in general has forgotten about it, and I definitely don’t know why most of the rest of the media then continued to report on the relationship as being only a month or two long, going off of the times they were photographed together. Edit: also, judging based in the amount of average girls and fans spilling the tea in recent years about past hookups with celebs including Harry Styles, both during and after his 1D-era, he definitely was all about the chase in his teens/early twenties. And Taylor was smart to finally walk away even though it hurt. I would also imagine that it added to Taylor’s appeal to him that compared to picking up fans, she was much less accessible/attainable for him- she was not just 5 years older, but mostly at his level career-wise/fame-wise, and was in an intentionally-single period after a heartbreak lasting about a year.

I don't condemn taylor for talking about Harry for so long even though the "real relationship" lasted so little... If the therapy I started going to in order to heal myself from the damage my situationship did to me taught me something is that falling in love with someone's potential is more affecting than angy other type of infatuation and it can and it will linger a lot... In my opinion, the 1989 vault tracks are the best vault tracks BY A MILE! The 1989 TV release reminded me of how icon 1989 was/is. My favorite is Now That We Don't Talk. I agree with your criticism that the only flaw is it should be a longer song. I wish she would have written another pre chorus so it could have reached close to the 3 minute mark. I love the idea of thinking of an ex/having unanswered questions but then reminding yourself "well I guess it doesn't matter because we don't talk anymore". The relatable heartbreak! I also wonder if she was reminded of Joe while rerecording this? I agree the song is about Harry, but I don't know if her and Joe are even friendly anymore. I can see this song representing Joe as well since she talks about someone slowly losing interest which made me think of You're Losing Me.

They were talking over like six months in 2012 while both were seeing other people, dated for three months, and were over in January 2013. Guys guys... I'm watching your analysis and shouting alone as if I were participating in your conversation (by the way, you are both super funny and I love you). You're missing an important detail here, where she is EVEN MORE OBVIOUS in responding to Harry. He wrote a song for the 1D album "Midnight Memories" that come out in the time she was working on 1989... The one I make reference is "Something Great" and, while the guy isn't a poet, or wasn't one 9 years ago, she is SUPER direct in answering to him on "Is it over now?" Check out his lyrics: Something Great ... One day, you'll come into my world and say it all You'll say we'll be together even when you're lost One day, you'll say these words I've thought, but never said You'll say we're better off together in our bed I want you here with me Like how I pictured it So I don't have to keep imaginin' (Oh) Come on, jump out at me (Oh-oh)

These new songs about Haylor have also got me wondering if other songs are about their relationship, especially 'Hits Different' now seems like it has a similar vibes to these vault songs, with all the dramatizing of the relationship, the line "I pictured you with other girls in love, then threw up on the street" especially reminds me of new lines on is it over now

Thank you so much for this!!! 🙌 I thought it was interesting in Now That We Don't Talk that she said "remind myself how you made it before I left" and "broke my own heart because you were too polite to do it" i think with other Haylor songs we kind of assumed he left her. Also when Madeline talked about the blue dress on a boat line as being a bit random and only good because we know exactly what she's talking about, i think the blue dress fits because she's talking about colours in that section with the white snow, red blood, blue dress. It's not her best songwriting for sure, but it does make sense, and the fact that she was able to say so little and have us all KNOW exactly what she meant was genius! Hearing those songs, I definitely think he inspired other songs in later albums. I love that we got a deeper look into how she really felt about Harry. Haylor is never over!!!

Super cool hearing both perspectives of suburban legends, I had only thought about it in the same way as Zack. Either way Taylor is the queen of a double entendre and I love her for it, I mean the ‘hit the breaks too soon’ definitely has a double meaning, it really shows her ability as a writer. I love @charlottebellas4166 comment!!! About the second verse 31:31 I was thinking something similar -- She is clearly stating that she fantasizes about them ending up together and surprising everybody, showing they made it through after all. Also I get why she chose a school scenario as the metaphor, usually relationships that start in schools are doomed to fail, but once in a while you get that one couple that was able to make it and surprises everyone by still being together at the school reunion. So she is saying she dreams about them doing it as well. Relationships between young celebrities are often think of being doom to fail as well so she fantasizes with them being that rare couple that made it through, that he would be more than a chapter in her old diaries!!! Like, I thought it was obvious!!

Been waiting for someone to really breakdown these, so thank you for really digging in! One somewhat important factor that contributes to maybe some the mismatched dynamic of her and Harry though might be that she was 22-23 and he was 18-19 so even though it’s not massive it’s very developmentally mismatched and I’m sure showbiz muddles that too because they were both treated as adults even when they were children. But those are both pivotal and tough ages to morph through and they were having different career and life experiences at that time. So just a different component to consider.

As soon as I listened to "Is It Over Now?" I knew it would be the track that Zach would love the most and his reaction to that track proved me right. I loved that the vault tracks gave me a peek behind the curtain of the Haylor ship. I was never a fan of their relationship, but I am definitely a fan of the songs that came out of it, at least on Taylor's part. I think my favorite vault track thus far is either "Say Don't Go" or "Suburban Legends." I love both of those tracks for very different reasons.

What’s really interesting with that I broke my own heart because you weren’t too nice to do it line. Is that from what I’ve heard British people are more casually rude to people they like, and potentially care about her and the more polite they are to you the more they actually don’t like you at all. So maybe part of the break up was Harry being extremely polite to her, because he really didn’t love her, and Taylor didn’t understand that because she was not versed in British culture.

I agree with Zach on this. It’s a cultural thing, and Harry comes across as the stereotypical well mannered-gentleman British boy everyone thinks is “so nice”. But that is not incompatible with being immature and avoidant. If you listen to his songs ab her (alleged) the feeling is that she was full on, he was not into it and then when she left he fell for her and she was like not now. At some point though from her songs there’s also the message of getting back together later on. Like, not working now cos of or being too young, or fame demands but we will be together in the future. It’s in his songs (something great by 1D which she references with the something greater lyric) and also when she says “When you told me we'd get back together” and after the 300 dates “ I was hoping you'd be there And say the one thing I've been wanting”. At some point there was talk of getting back together and My interpretation is that she gets upset with him for sleeping around so publicly instead of sticking to their plan of being discreet and together in the future. It could also have been wishful thinking from both parts.

i feel like the lyrics "handprints in wet cement" could be taken two ways, like I've seen people say it's like when you make handprint impressions in cement as like a memento "love to think you'll never forget" etc, but i feel like it's calling back to the "moonlit swimming pool" and the handprints in wet cement are wet hand prints on the cement from them kissing/fooling around poolside, does that make sense?

The way this entire series of vault tracks points back to the main album and Midnights and THEN points right back around to Harry’s first solo album is just crazy. Right down to weird animal sound on Is it Over Now? My first thought was of that stupid “duck” sound on Harry’s song Woman. Like are they just quacking at each other now? I will never get tired of this back and forth.

You know whats the funniest thing about 1989 and Haylor references, its the fact that people are actually surprised when theres haylor references, outside bad blood and welcome to new York and maybe one or two other tracks, every other song is in some way about Harry. Im pretty sure the album cover itself is a haylor reference or even the name of the album (yes i know its 1989 😂😂), but trust there's something about haylor in those things too. Boring relationship imo, but for some reason Taylor loves making a song about that British guy with the curly hair.

The school reunion is a metaphor for the fact that they, like former schoolchildren, met at various awards. All the songs (and the artists who released those songs) from 2012 came together at the Grammys 2013, for example. Artists met each other only at the big awards mostly. But this is just my interpretation...

I love that you said you think harry did eventually say I love you back because he did. He wrote a song called “I love you” for Alex and Sierra. And the 1D song Where Do Broken Hearts Go he references it “I wrote you a song with the words you spoke”. And the I Love You song has references to August. “You ran your finger down my back and you spelled out your name, we laid there in the soft warm ground for a week and thirteen days” “your back beneath the sun, wishing I could write my name on it”. And the week & 13 days part is 7+13=20. 20 is a Haylor number.

I think it’s the perfect musical expression of the lyrics if that makes sense. Suddenly, we don’t talk anymore but I still hear the echo of what we were until that fades away completely too.
