This is my most requested homeschool video! So I hope it delivers. Here you'll find nearly every resource we've used or plan to use while covering our Middle Ages unit. You can find details of the books and other resources we've used as well as the vendors I purchase material from on my website on the blog post that accompanies this video.
www.pepperandp...
When putting together a history unit, I look for books/resources in the following topic areas:
History (famous people, timeline history, historical events)
Biographies (picture books work great for biographies)
Geography (a single atlas book does fine)
Historical fiction (a great way to get your history/culture in a fun book)
Culture/food/clothing (cook up a dish from the time period)
Audio books/songs (music from the time period is fun to listen to)
Projects/Activities (pre-made kits are a go-to staple around here)
Games (Professor Noggins are our favorite)
Workbooks (use sparingly or skip and do narrations)
Picture books (surprisingly informative & fun)
Activity and project books (Lauri Carlson has several)
Science/math (adding other subjects rounds out your unit)
Two more things I use for lesson planning are full back Post-its sticky pads and a pencil. I write notes about each book/resource on the sticky pad and stick it on the front cover of the book for easy lesson planning. This helps the next time I do a unit since I may not use all the same materials.
The majority of the books and projects were purchased from
www.rainbowreso...
The majority of the handwork material was purchased from
www.achildsdrea...

omg how wonderful you are to give your kids this gift of education. this is things you can not even get from private schools no matter how much money you pay, and definitely not from public schools no matter how much reforms you demand. really this teaches me that the best one to provide for my childrens education is myself. only a parent can do this. only a parent would give in this much time effort and energy and love and caring

Another great book on a female in history who changed the world in some way is "The Girl Who Drew Butterflies : how Maria Merian's art changed science". I've been quite surprised by how captivated my 8 year old son has been in this book, and her life - and the way the world was back in those times for women, especially women who had talent and dared to be real. Her story starts in 1647 - highly recommend it, I originally just got it because we were doing a butterfly unit and my son loves art - but this book brings so much more than a girl drawing butterflies.

I cannot thank you enough for doing this video. I was very overwhelmed by the amount of information from the Middle Ages and now I feel better. Next year my girls will do the Middle Ages and your video is of great help, as always. Thank you!

Oh c’mon that timeline forgets Portugal, we were born right in the beginning of the medieval ages and we’ve survived since then! You should explore the Arabic influences left in Portugal since the crusades. Even our language nowadays has remnants of the Arabic culture in many of our words that begin with “al...”

Ack! This was sooooo helpful! JazakhAllah Khayran. We're covering the Middle Ages this year and have also decided to split it into three parts - China and the Silk Road, Medieval Europe, and the Islamic Empire. We've just wrapped up China and this is the boost I needed to dive into Europe. I ordered several of the books on your list. So excited about cooking! And the historical fiction about the plague - I searched high and low for something exactly like that! Also, I never thought of the Getty Villa as a field trip spot, but it would be perfect. Thank you! Some other books I found that might be of interest (though I personally can't vouch for them...yet): Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!: Voices from a Medieval Village (audiobook), A Street Through Time (my son really enjoys looking through this book), and Jim Weiss' rendition of King Arthur and Robin Hood/The Three Musketeers (audiobooks). We also suffer from a lack of "facts" (aka, dates) in our lessons. We haven't found our spine book yet, but I'm always on the lookout...This year we're trying Curiosity Chronicles but the format is hard for reading aloud. We'll see how it goes.

And for the Silk Road...some things we enjoyed (and some we didn't enjoy but maybe others would): Demi's Marco Polo and Zheng He and Genghis Khan, Eat it! Food adventures with Marco Polo by Gracie Cavnar, Traveling Man by James Rumford, Adventures of the Treasure Fleet by Ann Bowler, Into the Unknown by Stewart Ross, Night Sky Dragons by Mal Peet, Chengli and the Silk Road Caravan by Hildi Kang. We also picked up I Rode a Horse of Milk White Jade and The Golden Dream of Carlo Chuchio by Lloyd Alexander but in skimming them I didn't think they would work. I found it a real challenge to find resources, or at least to find good historical fiction and source books in comparison to finding material for Medieval Europe. I'm probably forgetting some things, but these came to mind.

Hey great video as always. Just a heads up that Geoffrey of Monmouth cannot be taken too seriously/as completely factual. It is a great book to read, but you have to treat it with a critical eye. It's a kind of mix between history and legend. Just something to know and watch out for.

I would like to get the Life in a Castle 3D Carousel book. Amazon lists a board book and hardcover version. Would you happen to know the difference- or know which yours is? Infortunately, the price differential is huge! I am hoping the board book will be ok. Also, I LOVE your post. It has been super helpful to me in organizing our unit later this spring. Thank you!

I do not understand how they will get a degree to qualify for a job in the future when you teach them at home? And how are their tests at each stage of study? I hope to answer my question. I have been following you for months and I want to do this( homeschooling) with my kids but I do not know how they will get a degree to be able to get a job in the future.

Mariam Most homeschool graduates go on to get higher education degrees and jobs. Homeschooling laws vary from state to state. So in some cases tests are optional.

It really depends on the content and the kids - we like doing a full year of everything revolving around a core theme - we are just finishing up a year of nature science are about to start a year on vikings. Others might do a week, a month or two, or half a year - that's the beauty of home education.
