The skin color of Salamanders was already solved. The vast majority of Nocturneans have strongly melanated skin, but with the marine creation process this darkness takes it to a new level. There are codices and official models painted by GW staff painters showing Salamanders skin being anything from light charcoal, to vanta black, but ultimately everything on a gray to black scale. GW even taught people to paint the skin in grayscale in their tutorials.

All people on Nocturneans are black due to the suns radiation (as in real life). There can also be non-ethnically black salamanders, like Sa’kan too though.

23:41 Now we have Pariah Nexus on WH+. The Salamander there (Sa'kan) has asian facial structurw but with a dark grey skin tone. So canonically they are monochromatic but only the darker shades (dark grey to vanta black).

Personally, I have always seen them as Black/Grey, like the actually color, in the artwork I have come across. I was always under the impression it was chosen to sorta relate them to ashes because they are from a volcanic world and are all about the whole fire thing. But I could see how they could also be viewed as just really dark brown skinned. Either way w/ Henry Cavill supposedly heading up a live action 40k series for Amazon, we may get to see if Isyander's theory is correct very soon.

This is true but I have to imagine that the reason why so many of them look the way they do has to be because of some level of warp influence as well as the possibility of intended genetic modification upon colonization like 30,000 years back. Which would also kind of explain why the salamander successor chapters seem to just keep mutating like those ones with the bones in their wrists similar to Wolverine's claws in X-Men without the adamantium metal. They're not mutated really overall, but it's just that little bit that makes them sort of unnatural compared to most of the humans with the red glowing eyes and all. Considering that humans that have lived on other planets like Nocturne have never been naturally or even the possibility of genetically modded adaptation like how it's believed that even regular people on Fenris already have a little bit of wolf DNA bonded to them when they colonize that planet. As well as the massive direwolf like canines that they have there being modified to survive on that planet. Although for the salamanders the dragon-like beasts that they hunt down as part of their training to be accepted into the legion and get their name from, might be naturally from Nocturne.

So one of the traits I love about the Salamanders is their ingenuity. They have a knack for figuring things out, especially technology. They had to flex this trait hard in their assault on the Tempest Galleries. Faced with dark age automata, they broke down what machines they could get their hands on and repurposed it into weapons that could hurt the machines they had to fight. They even reconfigured the machines they were fighting against to be redirected as brutal attack machines to send back at their mechanical foes. Although afaik it's been retconned to be something that every chapter does, they would name their vehicles and treat them like another honored battle-brother, giving them commendations and honors after battles. Also wanna point out that, originally, their preference for flame and melta weaponry wasn't exactly by choice. Before the primarch, they used these short ranged high power weapons because they were the best tools for the jobs they were given. Having had their numbers decimated at the Tempest Galleries, they took a more backseat role in the Great Crusade. Think quelling uprisings in cities, security detail, escort missions, and culling Ork infestations on already conquered worlds. Most of these jobs involved short ranged fire fights, so it made no sense to bring a lascannon when a Multi-melta would do the job better since range was not an issue. This is why it kinda grinds my gears when people immediately attribute them to flame and melta since, at least at first, it wasn't so much their preference as much as just being what made sense at the time. This was testament to another defining quality of theirs, their pragmatism. Obviously with their recruitment only coming from Nocturne post primarch it absolutely became their preference, but it just annoys me that people ignore all of the other great qualities of the Salamanders and just jump straight to "FIRE YAY!!!!" when they are so much more than that. Also fun fact, the Techmarines of the Salamanders are such proud artisans that they tend to have their armor colors inverted: where techmarines of other chapters are mostly Mechanicus red with one shoulder showing their chapter colors the Salamanders wear the chapter colors all over with one Mechanicus red shoulder. The Mechanicus of Mars highly values Salamander wrought tech and will actively attempt to trade for it. I watched this vid so long ago but couldn't respond at the time, then I kept forgetting to lol

The Salamanders are honestly my favorite because they’re one of the most unique factions in 40K. They’re not just a historical culture/group put into the future and cranked up to 11, like the Space Wolves or the White Scars. They have a completely original culture, motif, and perspective on human life that makes them among the greatest.

Dark skinned Space Marines are absolutely fine, and GW should paint more brown faces in the chapter books to make that clear, but I think the books also pretty clearly described the Salamanders as UNNATURALLY black. Like really dark grey. You paint them however you want, I'm just not entirely sure how the lore supports it.

You know, I like listening to WH40k while woodorking. Listening while not needing to look at a video is perfect. Meaning, I have to put in the absolute minimum effort to enjoy. LT seems to have a lot of good information as well as other big channels, but (maybe it's the monotone voice) I find myself having to rewind because I toned out something I'm actively trying to pay attention to. When I listen to you guys, I find myself not paying attention to my woodworking lol. Like I always say, things are easy when you like and know what your doing. God, your discussion of D&D made me imagine a scene with all the Primarchs and Big-E sitting down for Family D&D Night and having this MASSIVE 20+ person campaign run by Malchador or something lmao. I remember reading somewhere in one of the books that the Salamanders have their skin tone the same as it was before the augmentations, but when they get exposed to the light/atmosphere on Nocturne it turns their skin into a very deep black like Vulcan's and the other Nocturne natives.

The Salamanders are perhaps my favorite chapter because they remember WHY they serve, not just how to serve. The empire is nothing without its citizens, and too many chapters, and especially the inquisition, seem to have forgotten that. The Salamanders have not.

I thought he was going to talk about the fact that the Salamanders come from a world where it has very little sunlight. Let that sink in, they live on a planet called Nocturn, because of the very little sunlight that comes through all the ash clouds from the volcanos. Apparently, a nonspecific radiation mixed with Vulcans gene-seed causes them to have pitch black skin. Which in layman terms means the writer had no idea how melanin actually works, but it was too late to fix it and a retcon was not on the table for some reason. Although it did bring the thought that instead the Salamanders all looked like the Raven Guard and Volcan looked like Corvus, which is hilarious to think that the friendliest people in the 40k are a bunch of albino emos. In a way its more terrifying to see a massive vampire looking man coming towards you than the guy who looks like he baths in flamethrowers. The confusion increases, when you see some of official art showing Salamander's with ash grey skin, which is fitting considering they come from a planet of ash.

I always imagined, based on verbal descriptions of Vulcan, that he was more like Darkseid. Massive, dark ash grey, with glowing red eyes. Hell some of the animated versions of Darkseid have his armor looking similar to a space marines anyways.

I LOVE the Salamanders lore so much but the chapter I find most attracted to model wise and playstyle wise has always been the Dark Angels, i just love the plasma and bike combat too cool. Have been agonizing on which one to make my homebrews gene seed for ages... Love both of their lore (I find myself reading/listening to more salamanders stuff) but the whole hiding past groups of traitors is also very very cool. Ah how difficult it is to be indecisive.

Honestly, my headcanon is that they're a good charcoal black just becasue the UV interacting with their geneseed and causing that kind of weird hyper melanism is more of an interesting quirk. It's exactly the kind of weird shit you expect from Space Marine geneseed fuckups. And of course, a 9 foot tall, pitch black giant with glowing red eyes looking like a demon straight out of hell being the MF who would tear his way through hordes of orks to save a little girls teddybear is very on brand for the Salamanders.

In the books it has been heavily heavily employed that is the vanta black. I would love to see them cast black actors as salamanders with the vanta black overlay with flashbacks of them as scouts with white face like the Wayans did in 'White Chicks'.

6:47- Most can. It's the Omophagea. I don't think any legion/chapter has had it atrophy, but I know in like the Blood Drinkers and Flesh Tearers it's mutated a bit, not necessarily to be better at its function, but to give them weird cravings for flesh and blood.
