Hey folks, Mike here from Ollie and in this video, I want to tell you all about WordPress patterns and how we can build beautiful websites very quickly with patterns like you’ll find in the Ollie block theme.
In classic, code-heavy WordPress themes, the design of your site was largely dictated by what designs were coded into the theme. To modify your design, oftentimes, you would need to customize the theme’s code, or hope that there were settings in the Customizer to help you customize it. There really wasn’t a way to easily add to a design or build a new one within WordPress without a page builder plugin.
With the arrival of the block editor, the site editor, and block themes, those days are long gone. Now, we have powerful design tools like patterns and a customization interface to build our sites visually, in more of a no-code fashion.
Patterns are a huge part of this new paradigm. Patterns are collections of content blocks arranged in a pre-designed layout. A pattern can be as small as a few lines of text, or it can be as big as a full-page layout. Patterns make it easy to design new pages because you can insert new designs or build full page layouts with just a few clicks. Themes like Ollie come packaged with a bunch of beautifully designed page and section patterns that can save you a ton of time when building a new site.
And now, with WordPress 6.3, we have something called synced patterns, where we can globally update all the instances of a pattern throughout our site in one centralized location. Between patterns, synced patterns, and template parts, there’s a lot to cover, so let’s hop into WordPress and start learning about patterns.

Hi, if i detach a pattern then i have to change the email at 2 different places? Do i have to create a child theme or can i use the theme as it is?

We talked about this at some other place, but Just to make sure I get this right: When you use Replace Header or Replace Footer like you do in the section about Template Parts (12:12), it only changes the header or footer for the active template (in the video that would be Pages I think). So templates like Blog Home or Single would still have the other header, right?

In the future, will OllieWP be compatible with ACF and Woocommerce, as well as dynamic content?

Hey there, I don't think there's anything preventing you from using it with ACF right now. The theme should take on any ACF fields you put in there. In terms of WooCommerce, perhaps eventually we'll have deeper support. I haven't tested it against Woo yet because that's not the focus right now. I'd like folks to be able to build standard websites with it before shifting to look at Woo!
