It's funny that Brazilians party late too, the RC is the zero floor and we kiss in the cheek to say hello ... some similarities here! So when I came to America I noticed those differences 😊

As an English person who is going to France in a few months.....thank you for this podcast. This is such vital information! I'm meeting a French friend of mine for the first time and in England....we hug people! All the time! So this is very good to know. I have seen some articles talk about la bise and some say that only loud English people make the kiss "mwah" sound. Don't do the sound. But I suppose that must depend on which part of France you're going to. I'm going to Paris, but my friend is from Normandy. Maybe we'll both look weird to Parisians XD

In India also floor numbers r same like France. In local language 1 st floor and ground floor r same. Thus 1 st floor becomes 2 nd floor in local language.

French is the most beautiful language in the world. The hardest part for English speakers is the pronunciation especially the dreaded “R”

As I've worked at a French bakery and had French bosses, yes they are very calm when speaking. Until you make a mistake and you are gonna hear how loud they can be. And then see them take ten espresso breaks before your day is done.

jejeje I love how Alex thinks Disco is 80-90s. that's just cute. LOL (it's the late 60s - late 70s). Either way, it's a great vid. I love hearing the slang stuff before anything else.

Great start guys and yeah, the Orly airport and the RER B from the city centre to Antony, I know it hahahah. The RC is also the same here in Germany, in Brazil and Portugal. Portuguese people call it exactly like the French, rés-do-chão. In Germany we say Erdgeschoss and térreo in Brazil. All 3 mean the same, ground floor. The next floor will be the 1st floor. Germans smoke a lot too but not as much as French and Brazilians mostly don't smoke cigarettes. And almost everything is closed here in Germany and Austria on Sundays. My region in Brazil uses the same voltage as here in Europe 220/230 V and other parts of the country like Rio or São Paulo use 110 V. These cultural aspects are so important to know. Thank you for sharing them! Greetings from Munich

Questions: 1. im pretty sure i saw in one of your insta videos that you don’t say “je m’appelle.” Is it “Moi, je suis…”? Or can I do without the moi? And what about if I’m introducing my husband? “Il s’appelle” or can I do “il est”? 2. If I bump into someone, would I say “désolée” or “pardon” ? Some Americans (like me) say sorry a lot. Is saying “désolée” a much bigger deal, like should it be reserved for formal apologies? Or can you use it if you didn’t quite understand someone or whatever little thing im apologizing for? 3. I heard that it’s polite to leave a little wine in the glass and not to drink the whole thing, is that true? 4. Last time I went to a somewhat nice dinner in Paris, I think we may have ordered from a family style menu because we got sooo much food. I couldn’t eat all of it and felt bad because I was worried that it was impolite to leave food on the plate. I’m pretty sure taking food to-go is not a thing (wouldn’t do that while traveling, but I might be wrong anyway). Do you have any tips here for me? I’m going to France and Belgium in April so your help is so appreciated! I love that you are doing a podcast! Y’all are not only helpful, but fun and interesting. I’m a high school teacher and I have a lot of students taking French, ill have to tell them to start listening!
@rendez-vous3222 жыл бұрын
Bonjour Jeanie ! 1. The correct way is to say: je m’appelle (pronounced j’mappelle) 2. Either works but I prefer to say pardon 3. Not it’s not true at all 4. So yes, taking food to go is definitely not a thing in France. We don’t really ask for boxes to go. Waiters or people around you won’t feel offended if you don’t finish your food. My tip would be make sure when you order something to ask for quantity. Usually plates are pretty small but it depends :)

We DO take food to go in restaurants (they have to when a customer asks because it’s now mandatory since July 2021, I think because of Covid, and also to avoid waste !!) We use the expression « doggy bag » to say « to go » when it comes to the leftovers Also it’s definitely not impolite to leave food on your plate if you are full, the waiters won’t be offended (they did not cook the food 😉😂)

@rendez-vous322 Do you find that your knowledge of French and English is interfering with learning Spanish? I am a native English speaker, and took Spanish in high school and college. (30 years ago!) Now that I am starting on the journey of learning French, I find that my meager knowledge of the Spanish language is making it extremely difficult to get proper pronunciation of French words. It seems like if a syllable is accented in Spanish, it's silent in French. If it's a or ah, its e or i! I can't get right!

I would prefer that you guys speak both French and English…So for example begin speaking about a topic in French and then explain it in English…Then move on to another topic in French then explain in English etc…Because I feel like you guys are speaking very authentic French but if you spoke French the whole time I would lose interest because it would be over my head…But you guys are great and I thank you for doing this!!!!!!!😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃

I have a degree in French and it doesn’t matter. I try to follow protocol and I still get treated like shit. I just got back from France. If we are loud, we don’t want to have sex with you. Granted I’m not loud in France, but this last trip made me want to scream. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to CDG . Where are the F&$@ing signs directing me to customs ? Then you see the sortie signs but there’s a glass wall between you and the exit signs. My favorite moment is going to a concert and our seats are taken because the concert is oversold which is a fire hazard and against the law in the United States. An English friend told me months before I went that the photo booths were out of order at CDG. I wanted a Navigo Découverte pass. Couldn’t get one because the machines are still out of order. Everything is made more difficult so when I got back from my trip a few weeks ago, I decided to be more f&$@ing loud and to smile more . When we smile, it’s a positive way of acknowledging your presence without saying hello. I definitely don’t want to pickpocket you. I’m tired of these protocol videos when I already know how to act . These suggestions don’t make my life easier when you’re constantly surrounded by solemn faced assholes. I’m the opposite of the ugly American. I’m an opened minded liberal . So many opinionated people , so for once I’ll share mine . Everyone loves honesty. Paris gets a D- in a customer service and this is the city hosting the Olympics next year. Good luck with that .

Maybe it's you. I just got back from my honeymoon with four magical nights in Paris and two in London. I don't speak a word of French. My wife was a high school French teacher and is fluent. With the exception of one metro station employee, every person we encountered was positively delightful! We had the BEST time! Oh, and I am 6'3" and 285 lbs, and she is 5'10". We are so obviously American in every way I feel like we stuck out like a sore thumb, but we had the time of our lives and I can't wait to go back!
