I just got my first puppy ever- Almost thirty years old here, and been a cat person my entire life. Cats are easy- mine were at least. You just set them down and show them their litter location, and place of food, and walk away. Clean up is easy. I did not know what to expect with this puppy, and he's fortunately awesomely tempermented... The first 24 hours we didn't have toys or anything for him and when he peed in the house for the hundredth time, I yelled at him outside (Just the word "NO!" very loud and angrily), and he got scared to come back in with me. It broke my heart completely- I stayed up the next night and found your videos, and immediately convinced my girlfriend to run out and get some things you've shown me puppies need immediately. He now has a very large crate for his size (He won't get very big ) in which he got into immediately and loved following your advice... plenty of toys with different textures (because he is quite bitey)- this has helped and I'm following you're "show him what I like" and "give him something else to bite" methods in alternative sessions. I am now only three days into this- I've been teaching my already dog-knowledgable girlfriend about what she's doing wrong (politely- don't want to be killed)... and being someone with no kids at this point... I have to say I love this guy and the responsibility I have to him. In three days he's stolen my heart and I am so glad that there's a place I can go to find how I can do my best for him. Thank you so, so, so much! We're teaching him fetch soon, and getting him an exercise pen- we can't really let him roam our room free for too long without him biting us a bunch or getting into things. Vets say he's 4 months old according to his teeth. Anyway- Thank you again so so much!

Love how Zak teaches pups and dogs he has really helped me be a better dog parent we recently got two beagle pups they are brothers and 4 1/2 months old. When I searched the web for help teaches two pups their name all I found was negative comments how never to get two pups at once. I stressed about this until our vet told us not to believe everything you read and that they are both very confident and happy pups and love human interaction . Feeling better I stumbled upon Zaks training app and started training my pups seperately how to sit,look at me , lay down ,stay leave it and shake a paw and now they will do all those things together most of the time. They love to play fight and now go outside when the shananagons get out of hand when I say no more take it outside they go to the door and go outside. I absolutely love how energetic Zak is and it truly hits home when he says you have to be genuine because they will sense it. Believe me it's been frustrating at times and when it is we take a break . All I want is to have the best relationship possible with well behaved dogs and Zak is helping us do that with all his great videos. Keep up the great work !!

Zak you've done it again, out of all methods I have seen and tried on youtube to teach fetch, your's was the ONLY one that worked beautifully on my 4 month old standard poodle Rocky. He enjoys playing so much more now with this method of teaching fetch, he literally got the toy and gave it back to me within minutes! I can't thank you enough dude. just some notes, ignore this! tug of war - get the dog interested - then lose interest by stopping the tug - as soon as they let go, pull forward - keep a cool head regarding aggressiveness - slowly increase the barrier between tugs catch - keep first several throws short - get the dog used to the structure of fetch - the closer you are to the dog, the more they chase you - run with them to get the toy and return to the point of origin - over time the dog will learn to play fetch with anything, anywhere

I just had the best game of fetch with my new pup Captain. He was dropping the ball on command. Your videos have made it all possible thanks to the commands leave it ( I say Drop), No or Eh!, Get it, and Yes! Also it really helps how you showed getting the dog interested in the toy. Before your video's, I was definitely getting frustrated at times but you have helped me learn to be patient and understand what is going on in the dogs head. My old dog would rip up her blankets when she was home by herself as a young dog. I got a bitter spray for the blanket, but the little freak seemed to actually like the spray. She would even bring her treats over to the sprayed blankets and roll them on the blanket before eating. It seemed she wanted the taste to rub off on the treats. She never did it with unsprayed blankets. She was a bit of an oddball.

Thanks Zak George, I find your videos are the first videos I go to for my puppy training! I have a 10 week old puppy and have already taught him, sit, stay, shake a paw, lay down, and come - with treats of course, but he'll do most of those without treats already. I'm working on leash walking with Zak's help because the puppy is terrible so far lol. My whole family is learning with Zak's methods.. like 'make something else interesting' so he stops biting, or stops chewing shoes.

Thank you so much for this video! I had assumed (wrongly, I now understand) that a lab would just know how to play fetch because they are retrievers. It is reassuring to learn that all of our puppy's "mistakes" (getting distracted, not bringing it back, not wanting to let go, etc.) are totally normal. It turns out that my intuitive approach (discouraging tugging and chasing) was totally wrong. I can't wait to put all the advice into practice so that we can use the game of fetch as exercise to make an already good dog much happier and healthier.

I got lucky with my dog, he knew how to fetch when I got him, the only part I had to work on was teaching a let go, but that was super easy. In fact, whenever people ask me why I picked him, I just say that it was "love at first fetch". I really wanted a playful, friendly, outgoing dog, and when I was volunteering at the animal shelter I took him out for some exercise and discovered his love of balls. I fell for him the moment he chased the first ball... :) In his personal opinion, tennis balls should be renamed to "yellow, fuzzy orbs of happiness"

Any suggestions for a dog who has played fetch just fine until we visited the dog park where others like to throw the ball for him and have him return it because in most cases their dog is not interested in fetch. Thanks Zak. My dog is starting to get the game. My problem was with loss of interest at the beginning, but I knew from watching your other vids and, from our trainers at dog school, that I have to be more interesting than anything else around. It's hard, but you just need to go and be a little kid again! That's the easiest way to explain it. Run around act foolish it works like a charm, and not only will it get your dog's interest you'll feel energized at the end too. The other thing is PLASTIC BOTTLES. Wow man, I've bought so many dog toys, but a simple plastic bottle is the best toy ever! Smush it up a bit so the dog is able to bite it, and you'll have a silver bullet of keeping your dog occupied for hours. I got my dog to start fetch with a bottle, because that was the most interesting toy for her. One very important thing to note though. You should always take the bottle from the dog when it gets bitten through an destroyed, because the sharp plastic can cut your dog's mouth!

My 3-month-old lab puppy is very protective. She prefers to run away from me when I toss her something and chew it instead of playing fetch. I tried to put her on a longer leash in order to control her and play mini fetch first following the steps you showed, but she pulls away the leash and doesn't want to come to me even when I run she doesn't chase me. She just sits there and chews the toy and when I approach her she runs away or pulls the leash if she's on a leash. However, when we play tug she is not resistant and lets go pretty easily. Do I have to wait until she gets older or it is not due to her age and what should I do then?

IT's totally fine to reel in your puppy gently. Ideally start reeling in when your pup is thinking about lying down rather than waiting for her to lie down. Good luck!

bond with your dog more in other situations and games (like tug-of-war), make sure they get plenty of alone "chew time" during the day, then re-visit the fetching game with a toy they are very familiar with but chew the least. what works best for me is a rope toy like in this video. keeping in mind this probably won't work unless you have your dog focus trained, meaning they look you in the eyes and come when called and can sit-and-stay on que... I know it sounds irrelevant to a game of fetch, but it's about teaching the basics and then building off of those basics. and having your dogs attention and focus is key. zak has all the best videos for teaching!

Whatever you do, don't ever play fetch with your dog with a stick!! I know that Lafitte was chewing and playing with the stick for a little bit in the video, but playing with sticks is incredibly dangerous for your dog. They can get splinters in their mouth or esophagus, or they could get stabbed in the throat if they try to catch the stick (happened to a friend of mine's dog)

i have a border collie, who was heavily abused, obviously we adopted him. only problem with his past is, he WILL NOT PLAY. if hes a foot away and we get his attention he will cetch, but then just drops it. he chews but when our other dog goes for what hes chewing, he gives up!!!!!! its been a few months and we have tryed alot, only hes uncoroperitive. and not to mention scaird of us throwing toys any where near him... so the question is HOW DO YOU MAKE THEM PLAY? (we started taking walks/runs but hes a border collie he needs more!!)

Patience is the key. I have two Jack Russel Terrier rescues. One is obsessed with his ball and will play fetch (on his terms of course - he IS a JRT after all) all day without a break. The other was not interested, as if he's been told off for picking stuff up in his mouth and didn't seem to know how to play. I tried various tug toys and it slowly became apparent he only likes to tug with soft items, hard ropes etc he just wouldn't hold onto. As it is he only bites down very gently on his soft tug, so it's easy to pull it out of his mouth and 'win' the game. So I have to be gentle and build up slowly. The tug toy he likes is also about 4 foot long and fleecy (very soft), so I'm not too close to him when playing and he gets a reasonable hold on it. The way I got him interested was to fake playing with the tug on my own, as if it was the best thing ever (for me). His natural curiosity got the better of him and he started to want what I've got, so I wouldn't give it to him and kept it for myself (I made it very obvious). I did this several times a day for about a week. Each time he got more and more excited watching me play with the tug and really started to want it. I then let him have a couple of short goes, stopped the game and put the tug away, leaving him wanting more. I now pick a time when I know he's revved up to play and always end the game whilst he wants more. Once he's motivated to play, I structure the game and ask for a sit and wait before 'get it' as a release to tug and he will now jump to get the tug. I'm still working on fetch with this guy to eventually work up to fly ball. He's VERY competitive with other dogs and always wants to be first, so I think fly ball will become the entire focus of his existence. Stick at it and keep trying with different toys/tugs until you find a combination your dog finds appealing.

+John Lehmann dogs are great at learning at all ages however i would say 9 - 10 weeks if the best because they're really curious, however this is just an educated guess... dont take my word for it, but one thing i do know is that dogs learn at all ages x

+John Lehmann Any age between 8 weeks (Legal ownership age) and 12 years is easily do-able. Earlier ages like 8 weeks to -3 years are going to be more productive, this is the childhood-teen equivalent, 3-8 years is adult, and they would have figured out ways to get around the training system. 3.5 months is probably one of the best times to learn, they've adapted to your home and they are comfortable, again, you should always exercise them before training, this prevents them from getting distracted.

It looks so easy. But its not. Ive been using zaks method for 4 months with my now 1 year old dog and he knows how to play tug, however he loses interest. He loves to chase but not chase me. He will bring something back inside, then lay down and keep it, hell bring something back outside after a few laps around the yard, even if i throw it short distances. Idk what he learned before i got him at 8 months old, but its discouraging to say the least.

Joe My best guess is that need to pick up the level of peppiness? Also, fetch toys should be special and only brought out to play with by you. Chew toys are fine. At least that's my opinion:) Good questions.

I found a method that worked for one of my dogs (low play drive). I fake out playing with a brand new tug he's not seen before on my own. I fake play growl and pretend to rag it etc. Make it look REALLY exciting. If he shows any interest I say 'mine', walk away and continue to play on my own. I then put the toy away. Rinse and repeat. After a week of doing this several times a day, he now REALLY wants to know what all the fuss is about. I then started to 'allow' him to join in for short periods (stop the game before he 'checks out'). His motivation is now pretty high (he jumps to get the tug now).

I started doing the training with my puppy as the video was playing and she actually did the "leave" and "fetch" parts quite a few times on her own accord - this will definitely work for us!

That's why you have to be engaging and have the dog chase you, or use a long leash and encourage them back to you so they can't sprint off.

What CatsPlayPoker said! And, use more than one toy. Try to engage them with the other toy when he/she has the other one. Reward with treats for letting the toy go as well. If it feels too hard, start with the training inside and take it from there.

My dog doesn't play much, I want her to play fetch but she won't even put her mouth round ANYTHING except a treat. How do you get her to even start the tug of war? Also she doesn't walk after a ball either,,,,she didn't' have much of a puppy hood as she had puppies on the street when she was not quite a year… I don't know much about her background apart of that.

I've tried using different toys and being really really animated and fun, but my dog just looks at me like she doesn't know why I'm acting this way and goes and lays down. We got our dog at 16 weeks, he was playing fetch. Apparently, self taught. He even brought the ball back to us! I've never had a dog in all of my 46 years who did that! Within a couple of weeks, he was catching a tiny tennis ball in mid air. He's a Yorkie/Chihuahua mix (Chorkie). He is THE best dog!

if he is crate trained, then keep him in a crate at night ( they don’t usually go to the bathroom where they sleep) or you can let him go outside before bed. maybe he doesn’t have enough excercise? or maybe he’s sick?

These videos are always missing one small thing that makes them useless to me. In this case, it assumes the dog is already interested in a certain toy. Mine looks at me like I'm crazy because I want her to play with something.

My dog was the exact same. I've got a retired racing greyhound and he was not interested in any toys, but the other day we met a dog trainer on our walk who had a toy with some drops of rabbit scent on it and he went crazy for it (even though he doesn't hunt rabbits during our walks). There's several scents and it's often used by people who train hunting dogs. It should be available online!

He's still learning to bring it back but we're both having a blast. We've been together about six months and it's been hard to get him into play mode. Thanks for a lot of great tips in training. Just wanted to share, teaching "pick it up" and "give it to me" early, then separating the two commands gives an edge when training for "bring me the leash" or any other name specific item. Using pieces of other training really helps build up to bigger commands. Being a service dog, he must understand up to 2 commands at once and also be able to think for himself.

I am going to be taking in a 2yo German Shepard with the hope of returning him to his home. Currently he spends most of his time in a crate as he has never been trained and is out of control. My goal is to get him to learn the basics Sit, lay down, stay come, leave it and to calm down, walk on a leash, and to also be in the car without freaking out and barking and jumping all over the car. You have wonderful videos for all of these with the exception of the car (or I have yet to find it if you do). My problem is that in all your videos you express how important it is to make sure they are exercised properly before working on anything and he has all of this pent up energy and frustration form being in his crate too much. You have said fetch is one of the best ways to spend excess energy but I can't get him to let go of the toy no mater how long I just sit there holding it.(I have held on more than 20 minutes and he still won't let go) So then i tried just a walk (witch just seems to frustrate him more because he is not used to being on a leash) and coming back to try again and I still can't get it away from him. can you give me some more suggestions on how to get some energy out of him so I can work with him without him being frustrated?

I have a 6mo pit bull that loves to chew on things. I have been trying to work with him on the basics: Sit, stay, going in the crate, food manners etc. Havent really had to much time to work with him on the tearing stuff up but now that the basics are out of the way I can start working with him on fetch.

My Jack Russell got free from our dog run this AM. Had to chase him throughout neighborhood on my Ranger 4x4. I tied him out a few minutes before in 15 degree weather. He got free and went hunting. I caught him finally after 45 minutes. (Jack) is 7 months and we have Maggie (Aussiedor) at 8 months. I am studying your videos and starting my work with them. Thanks.
