Early in the vid you weren't certain whether your ipad needed to have an activated cell/data plan in order for it to work properly with Navionics. The answer is no, you don't. I bought my cellular ipad in 2017 as a backup to an older pc nav system when I brought our new to us trawler down from Maine to NJ. I never activated a cell plan for the device. It worked great for navigation back then and continues to be a source of nav system redundancy for us. Just a thought, but you've probably have a few tips & tricks for using Navionics on your ipad for searching or route planning, etc. If you think there's enough material, would another vid on real world use of Navionics be something to think about? Thanks for sharing your travels! Stay well & safe!

Great summary of iPad use onboard. We have a B&G plotter, but we almost exclusively use our iPad with Navionics for our primary navigation and keep the plotter running as a backup. It is simple, versatile, and mobile. We use a Lifeproof Nuud case as well and hold it in a ram mount setup with a bar clamp. We tend to clamp it in different locations around the cockpit depending on where we want to sit. We learned the hard way that a power source is needed for long days or multiple days of use, so we installed a couple USB outlets in strategic locations. Been very happy with this setup. Glad you’ve been putting yours to good use. Sail on!

I didn't notice if someone already mentioned this other option, but a cheap Android table like the Samsung Galaxy A7 Lite WITHOUT cellular has a built in GPS antenna, and is barely over $100. Fits the need perfectly for me. Yup, just download the maps when you have wifi internet connection, then you're good to go! I added a protective case, anti-glare screen, and $24 Lycan marine mount (surprisingly well built) to complete my setup.

Hi question, how do you down load the maps, ? do you just scroll over the area and then it just remembers this area? or do you have to a web site of some sort then down load and store on the device or a memory stick? thanks in advance

I'm a year late but did you find the SG display resolution/brightness OK? They seem a bit less than the ipads, but maybe it's good enough?

I just purchased a 2001 28 Albemarle sportfish in Virginia Beach and a moving it to Key Largo . I decided I was going to use the tablet with the Navionics as a backup thank you for your information should come in handy . I've been watching you since you started your videos and you should be proud you've come a long way .

Hey Billy,, What a timely video for me! I'm considering buying a new (used) trawler which is now in Florida and I'm in Connecticut. Rather than try and disconnect my electronics from the old boat I just sold everything together and I was considering using an iPad after watching you guys use one for so many years. This video has convinced me it's the right decision. Thanks you guys are the best and I always enjoy your videos!

Nice thanks, I’m looking to switch to iPad only. Crazy but I remember watching your early videos a long time ago. Glad to see you are still living the boat life. Cheers

I had a couple of ipads laying around...and I don't particularly like my raymarine. My iPads are not cellular. WiFi only. So I bought a Glo 2 external GPS. Works like a charm with Navionics. You do not need to download the charts. And you can switch devices as it uses a bluetooth connection. It's extremely accurate to about a meter.

Hey Billy, One thing I just thought of. Can you use a tablet to get radar images without having a stand a lone GPS unit and repeater?

You highlight one concern that I have regarding battery life and charging. I use my Zeus3 as my primary device and my iPad as my backup but the iPad, or rather the tenuous way of powering it or charging it has me concerned. That tiny plug and the cable are simply not sturdy enough for the sailing I'm doing of late (direct Portugal-Panama stopping only at Curacao and my upcoming crossing to Australia too - single-handed btw). There are navigational and safety issues - mustn't get closer to land than 12nm in the Pacific due to covid issues and I rely heavily on AIS returns coming through as well. Sure, not so many cruise ships right now (they can be over the horizon one minute and mow you down 20 minutes later) but miss an alarm while sleeping can be disastrous. And all this depending on the flimsy cable and tiny plug! I'd be far happier with a wired-in setup with a docking connection. Have you heard of one?

You don’t need to activate celular for the gps to work, don’t even need a SIM card. The other thing to think about regarding using iPads with navionics specifically is the limitation on number of waypoints on a given track.

I used Navionics on an android with my pontoon boat on long river trips or the ICW and it worked fine. I still use it from time to time on my John boat when going deep in the back waters. Navionics has raised their yearly renewal price from $25 to $50 but if you are out a lot is worth it. Just be very careful....if you are putting Navionics on an android, you download from the internet. Do not go buy the chip at a marine store. The chips are for the chart plotters only.

I guess really what are the measurements on the iPad? We were looking at the mounts and the says it only goes up to 8 and 1/4". Is yours smaller or larger than that including the waterproof case? We got the phone charging mount you showed last fall and it's great. So we are really hoping this tablet mount will fit our "pudgy" tablet. Thanks and keep having fun out on the water! You guys are an inspiration :)

We have a bad elf antenna for our wifi only i-pad. It works great, but plugs into the lightning port which means you can't have a charging cable plugged in at the same time. Also, the case is not waterproof with it plugged in. Lastly, the antenna itself has to be charged up. An ipad with a built in gps is for sure a better option.

Don't you find the course to steer information displayed in degrees true to be annoying with Navionics. It's much easier to steer to magnetic compass heading. How do you handle the variation?
@TulasTechTalk3 жыл бұрын
We just steer to the rhumb line on Navionics end don’t pay much attention to the electronic compass heading. Sometimes it is easier for people to steer to a magnetic compass and we do that once in a while too. I say just choose one or the other and don’t try to steer to both or compare the electronic compass to magnetic because it is always going to be off a few degrees

Have you ever experienced position offset? Matt Rutherford said in a podcast that his friend sailing in Bahamas got very close to running aground while following his ipad with Navionics but realized in time the ipad position wasn’t accurate.
@belitungislandhomestay4759 Жыл бұрын
position offset is common in my experience. I used to allow 100m safety margin but now use 200m after a few close calls. User added anchorage positions are often wrong enough to see you sitting on a rock at low tide. Not sure if this is a Navionics error, gps error or user input error, perhaps a combination of all. Remember, Navionics, and indeed paper charts, are an "aid to navigation".
