Another great video Lyell! So glad we could assist you with showing some of the different gear and help answer the question "Are you ready for solo diving?". Looking forward to more!

Another great video. Well done. I am just curious how can someone read the pressure on the yellow tank ? While I understand that it is backup and if anything happens with the main source, it is all about to get back to the surface. However, the location with the short hose does not appear readable?
@everythingscuba
@everythingscuba 3 жыл бұрын
Couple options. You could attach a 32 inch hose so you could have the SPG in front of you to check pressure. (But that is one additional line to deal with and streamline.) What I do is prior to every dive I double check pressure and do a quick submergence test to make sure no bubbles or leaks from the system. As you stated it is there purely to get you to the surface in the event of an emergency. Every solo diver has to have their setup they way they what it though. Thanks for your comments and questions!

@@everythingscuba another question... what brand is that Tank mount/strap thingy. I could not find that anywhere. probably due to not knowing the exact name for it. I love having the tank behind me, and be completely free in the front and the sides of me. Since the first time I tried side mount, for recreational diving, I thought "why?" That tank is just in my way and limits my personal space...

Dive Monster, this is the product made by XS Scuba. XS Scuba Highland Pony Mount with Buckle Pad. You can find it on Amazon. Caution though: if you are buying it for the 19 cu/ft cylinder, you what the 4.4 inch diameter version.

Good video, but why did you kneel to deploy the DSMB? On my solo/self reliant course that was not an option.
@everythingscuba
@everythingscuba 3 жыл бұрын
Gilles one of the “standards” on the course is for a diver to put up an SMB from the “bottom” deeper than a normal safety stop. I know it doesn’t look good to deploy an SMB if not neutrally buoyant but this is a PADI standard. The rest of the SMB release are from neutrally buoyant positions. It’s not a standard we necessarily agree with but we have to follow the standards. On page 27 of the Instructor manual, it states for the performance requirements for Dive 1 of the Self Reliant Course: “Deploy a lift bag or DSMB from the bottom.”

Really looking forward to completing this one. Sure would be nice to do it in St. Croix vs Iowa Quarry (Big Blue) though, lol.

Question about the SMB deployment. Why is it done healing on the bottom, surly in a realistic situation your likely to do it mid water
@everythingscuba
@everythingscuba 3 жыл бұрын
Correct Candy in a real situation but in the standards for the Self Reliant Diver class the diver is asked to release the SMB from the “bottom” deeper than a safety stop. The rest of the releases are made neutrally buoyant mid-water.

With the back mounted pony , he is unable to see the spg... I understand that it’s for emergency, and he would check it before donning .. But should a situation arise and had to use his redundant air , if he knew what air he had or didn’t have , he could factor in safety stops .. The guy with the slung pony , it looks like the Upper D ring is sitting very low , should that not be on his shoulder? Slung mounted is better

Thanks for your comments. We recently released a video with an alternate SPG setup for a backmounted pony that addresses your concern. Here’s the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4PLhoWkoq54rrs

If you are diving solo, why would you have an octo? You have no one to share it with and you look like a floating dive shop. If you have any failure the dive should be over. You would switch to the pony and you could safety stop and surface since this is a recreational setup. I think the streamlining and simplicity of losing the octo would be well worth it. Route the pony with a short hose on a necklace. You ever see a tech diver with doubles carrying three 2nd stages?

nice video but the finning technique was not that great for an experience diver (like in 5:35).. also, isn't a recommendation to bring some cutting tools and some additional redundancies (like double computers etc)?
@everythingscuba
@everythingscuba 3 жыл бұрын
Due to a previous injury Lyell has a bit of an odd finning style at times. We make sure to make fun of him for it!:) In regards to redundant gear, this video is part of an entire series we did on Solo Diving (we covered redundant gas systems, and additional redundant gear in previous episodes.
