Three things I learned about teaching ESOL overseas: Avoid on-line TESOL courses like the plague. Many countries won't give you a visa if you have one, and many companies won't even consider you for employment if your degree was obtained on-line. Ditto for TESOL certs that are under 120 hours. (I’d go for 140 just to be safe.) Lastly, MEMORIZE Mark's English Grammar Shortcuts - saves a boat load of teaching headaches.

What is Mark's English grammar shortcut?
@gillesbelanger10905 жыл бұрын
Partly true. Of course some countries might not recognize an online. Anyway, some won't give you a visa even with a Celta if you don't have a Bachelor's degree; perhaps some won't give you a visa if you're not from Mars. We can't please everyone. This said an online Celta is offered by ILSC Montreal with the same in-class 6-hour practicum as their regular one. Coventry International, Toronto, offer an in-class Trinity CertTesol as well as an on-line equivalent Tesol certificate, both with a 20-hour supervised in a classroom practicum accredited by Tesl Canada. The practicum can be done in any country if it meets some requirements. On-line certificates are more recognized then they used to. However, some on-line Tefl courses aren't welcome by many serious employers; the ones without any practicum, if we don't have a College Degree.
@ESLinsider4 жыл бұрын
Bullshit. Either you're a marketer in disguise or you don't know much. You rarely need a TEFL certificate to get a VISA. A degree and a passport from a native speaking country you do need to get a VISA. Lastly the companies that won't take an online TEFL are few and far between in Asia and even if they don't those are the kinds of schools that don't take inexperienced teachers anyways. Other thing is many online courses may suck but not all. It depends. And memorization is useless.

I did a TEFL years ago in Puerta Vallarta which was accredited by the state of California. It cost $1600 in 1996. It was a good introduction to the field. I have noticed that TEFL is more popular in places that prefer an American accent, such as Taiwan, Italy, and Korea. In Saudi Arabia both the British accent and a CELTA was preferred. Note that either certificate is the entry level into the field and neither should be considered proof of mastery of the complex process of language learning or education. Think of your long-term goals when you sign up for courses and know that they are basic tools to do your job.

Hello Janis, thank you so much for joining the discussion and sharing your thoughts and experience. I completely agree with you that either certificate is an entry-level program which should be built upon if a teacher decides to develop as an educator.

As an odd twist of fate, I originally wanted to learn TEFL, but when I finally found a school I liked, I searched for a discount code, found one, and after I signed up, I realized it was for TESOL! The twist here is that I am looking for work and had no clue I would be in a pickle if I had went with TEFL! Thankfully I unknowingly saved myself from a big clusterfuck! Also love how you said TESOL is more in depth, as that's what I was originally looking for. I was happy, too, when you said TESOL certificates help you land a job, as well. Btw I got the 120 hour course.

Ham Hmm, seriously? Each are acronyms. TEFL = Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Where in the world do you come up with a notion that an acronym means one thing or another? The vast majority of accredited 4 week, 120 hour in-person TEFL courses with observed practicum taught by trained instructors with extensive rigor are accredited. A CELTA course is a TEFL certificate. A Trinity course is a TEFL certificate. They now use the acronym TESOL for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages as this can imply the domestic use in a country where the 1st language is English instead of a country where the first language is not English (hence Teaching English as a Foreign Language). i.e. if you are living in the US and take French, this along with a dozen other languages at your university are under the Foreign Language Department. If you are from France taking English language, this would be considered English as a Second language. (ESL). It's a matter of perspective. www.internationalteflacademy.com/faq/tefl-tesol-celta-a-guide-to-basic-acronyms-for-teaching-english-abroad www.gooverseas.com/blog/difference-between-tefl-tesol www.goabroad.com/articles/tefl-courses/should-i-get-tefl-or-tesol-certified www.teachaway.com/tefl-certification/tefl-vs-tesl-vs-tesol

There's a lot of information that's not quite accurate such as a TESOL certificate being more complete than a TEFL course. Many courses to teach abroad are called TEFL courses. If you are taking the course in a country that's not a native English speaking country it's going to often be called a TEFL course. The criteria for the internationally accepted standards are 100 hours of coursework, 6 hours of student teaching (practicum). Whatever a company calls their course TEFL, TESOL, TESL etc is rarely of any importance unless their is a governmental regulation on the name of it to teach domestically in that country. Unfortunately, this guy was holding up a school's certificate that does not have any accreditation nor student teaching and thinking it was legitimate (not going to say which one but a few are not so hot). Here's an article to help understand how to choose the right TEFL certification school for you: www.internationalteflacademy.com/blog/bid/118706/7-critical-mistakes-to-avoid-when-choosing-your-tefl-class

I wouldn't pay all that money for a CELTA if you are planning on trying to teach English abroad because most popular sought out places that people want to teach in only for the most part want native English speakers. They don't care how well you speak English. If you're not native than they won't even bother. You may find some work but it will be for private schools that pay you very little. You might as well get a TESOL or TEFL and save yourself some money. This is all from experience. Don't know if this is something that has changed in the last few years.

Thank you so much for this helpful video! 😍 I have a question though... I speak English fluently, but I’m not a native. I wonder whether that disqualifies me from getting the TEFL without first having an English proficiency certificate? 😐 When buying the TEFL course, did you have to prove that you’re a native in order to proceed to the course/get the certificate? If yes, how did they actually check whether you’re a native speaker? I would be extremely grateful for your response! 🙏☀️☀️

Hello Marina, 1. The fact that you are not a native speaker of English and you don't have an English proficiency certificate (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL) doesn't affect your ability to receive TEFL/TESOL/CELTA. 2. You don't have to be a native speaker of english to receive TEFL/TESOL/CELTA. There are two things I advise you do: - Scroll down the comment section and see my previous answers related to "nativeness" topic. - If you are serious about teaching internationally, I would consider getting a teaching license instead of / in addition to TEFL/TESOL/CELTA. Malie Boo, I appreciate your feedback. By and large, your average school/language school will take any TEFL certificate at its face value. While lower tier school/language centres will pay far greater attention to the colour of your skin than to your credentials, more serious institutions will require a bachelor's degree/teaching license in the subject area you are applying for. Nevertheless, there is one legal requirement that you should look out for - a teaching certificate (TEFL/TESOL/CELTA) has to be of no less than 120 hours. I personally had problems applying for a working permit for an American teacher holding TESOL 100-hour certificate. I hope this information helps.

You don't need to have prior teaching experience to enroll. However, you do need to pass an interview containing general questions about teaching and learning. While you need to be proficient in academic English (e.g., IELTS band 8-9), you don't have to verify that. Again, the interviewer will be able to gauge whether you are eligible.

From my personal experience, you do need to know the basics of methodology and pedagogy to teach in general i.e. regardless of your mode of instruction (in class/online). In terms of getting a job, an online language school might ask for a teaching certificate, but with your teaching experience, they are very likely to neglect the fact that you don't have one. @edtechii4 жыл бұрын
Hello Zaman, thanks for the question. To the best of my knowledge, CELT-P and CELT-S are relatively new phenomena, whereas CELTA has been around for more than thirty years. This fact alone speaks of the robustness of CELTA syllabus and pedagogy it promotes, which CELT-P and CELT-S areyet to prove. CELTA Wikipedia page does not have a single reference to either of these tests. CELTA has always had an edge over its counterparts because of its emphasis on live practice and observations. I highly doubt that either CELTA-P or CELT-S have these two components due to lack of potential students. Indeed, this is what official Cambridge webpage says about CELTA-P, "Teachers build on their teaching knowledge and skills, through a combination of online study and observed teaching practice with an approved trainer". To sum up, both CELT-P and CELT-S are theoretical courses that due to their novelty have not yet earned the trust of the teaching community. All these are my own speculations based solely on my interpretation. I may be completely wrong.

@edtechii4 жыл бұрын
Hello Keyur, thanks for your question. TEFL / TESOL / CELTA are certificates for teaching English to speakers of other languages. If you are a subject teachers (e.g. Math, Science) you might as well benefit from the pedagogy offered by these certificates because if you are planning to teach overseas, you will most likely be teaching your content in English to speakers of other languages, won't you? To be qualified to teach a subject area at an international school overseas, you will most probably need a teaching license. You can find more information about it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZbalJuNfa-gZpI&t= and here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qp_IYaxpat-JfMU&t Hope this helps.

Hello there, which would be the best course to be an IELTS instructor/tutor? I'm leaning towards CELTA but if it isn't available, I was wondering if the other alternatives would also help me achieve that goal.
@edtechii2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you for your question. I assume IELTS has its own preparatory program for instructions, which can certainly benefit from additional training such as CELTA. However, I think that intricate knowledge and extensive experience taking the IELTS exam itself will be far more valuable for the tutor than pedagogical approaches offered in teacher training courses.

Hello, thank you for your comment. To answer your question - yes, it is possible to get an international teaching job without a bachelor's degree. I worked with two such teacher in southern China two years ago. However, if you do find such a job, which is not at all difficult to be honest, chances are that the school will invite you on a tourist visa, which is not legit, because you will not meet the requirements of a working visa. Hope it has been helpful!
@ebiinformatique98407 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the answer , and if u got invited as a tourist , whats the process to have your job visa legaly , sorry im asking a lot lol , maybe its just my chance to have an idea from the manager him self .
@edtechii7 жыл бұрын
You are more than welcome. When it comes to getting a "legal employment" in EFL industry, there is no a straight answer. For some people, legal is staying on a 90-days tourist and make visa runs to a neighboring country for renewal. For others, getting a legal work visa from one school and then shift to another school without canceling your visa is considered legal. Normally, before you apply for a work visa to teaching job in a specific country, the school will have to apply for working permit, which will be sent to you so you can go to the local embassy and apply for a working visa, which will be pasted into your passport. For China and Kuwait (as well as for many other countries I think), you will then have to extend the working visa into a residence permit, which will be valid for the duration of your employment contract. My personal advice, inquire with HR of the school you applying to, what the whole visa process will look like. Then go online and verify that to make sure the school knows what it is doing. I hope my answer was helpful.
@ebiinformatique98407 жыл бұрын
Very Helpful , Thank you so much .
@essennagerry7 жыл бұрын
My answer is kind of vague, but from what I find in East Asia you generally need a BA to get a working visa. If you're a native English speaker and a citizen of a country of the "inner circle" of English and aren't seeking any fancy university position or anything, any kind of BA would do, as long as it's a BA and done in an English speaking country. Definitely do look into the country's working visa requirement. As Mr. Permiakov suggested - "inquire with HR of the school you applying to, what the whole visa process will look like. Then go online and verify that to make sure the school knows what it is doing." Very good advice.
