I'm surprised no one has commented about these being the very sounds Liszt had heard. Perhaps Liszt paused and lingered as Evgeny did and allowed the instrument its own time to speak and breathe in its own peculiar manner. I feel he has succeeded in giving us a sense of what Liszt dreamed up in the privacy of this very room. Thank you for this.

Yeah, Evgeny is so humble and down to earth. He has absolutely zero arrogance or ego. Met him backstage after a concert once, he was visibly tired and slightly awkward but was extremely nice to everyone, and made sure everyone who wanted an autograph got one before thanking us all and waving goodbye. After he finished the first solo recital in the history of the BBC Proms in 1997, he rode off in a tiny red car with his teacher and mother and smilingly waved goodbye to his fans.

One of my leaving cert students played this in her practical exam last month on a digital piano. She is 18 years old and from Poland and her talent for this Liszt piece was amazing. But here Kissin is playing a grand piano, so the grand piano sounds a lot more rich and powerful than a digital piano. The problem about digital pianos is that the timbre doesn’t actually match the lightness and even the powerful emphasis on acoustic pianos like the grand piano. But of course, she did amazingly well, so next time, I hope she would try this piece on a grand piano, but she’s just started grade 8 though. This piano player here has a huge master of theory, so unfortunately at the moment, this student from Poland, she wouldn’t yet be at that level like Kissin, but let’s not make a comparison because she has a different piano journey than Kissin. Competitions are typically in sport, not music. Music is rather seen as expressive and conveying emotions rather than skill and showboating

But it can no longer sustain like a modern concert grand. Therefore playing on it must have been a huge challenge! Kissin adjusted his playing to the piano and its by now limited capabilities.

This piece has a special place in my heart. I played it as a child and as part of the repertoire I used to get into music school. Though I received a scholarship, I found that I wasn't well suited for a career in music -and the likelihood of becoming a music teacher, as most music students become. I have always believed that most recordings of this were far too fast so it's great to hear this more deliberate pace. I always look to Kissin for inspiration.

It sounds very good for a very old piano, but it has sort of a honky tonk sound. The upper registry does not sustain notes very long. The dynamics are much less linear than a modern piano. All old pianos sound like that, I don't know if its because of the age or the construction.
