I used to hear my neighbour down the street whistle back what I just played through the window during my breaks. I was so surprised as they were not THAT close - they were a street, empty landblock away. But it made me practice more to know someone was enjoying the music.

Same thing I experienced in India. I’ve lived in a few Indian cities and I’ve practiced singing and piano everywhere I lived and never had an issue with neighbours. They were extremely encouraging to classical musicians but when I moved to Munich and it was very different. A bit of practice and I had plenty of knocks and complaints and had to switch to a studio room with a piano to practice 😃

I am a passionate amateur pianist with a Bechstein Grand. This happened to me, when my piano moved in. I was trying to be calm and find a compromise with that neighbour (he was yelling and screaming like crazy 😜), but it was impossible. He even was talking to the landlord behind my back, I was so sad, because now my dream of a grand piano came true - and I couldn’t play?! So I decided to rearrange my flat- I changed rooms, so he wouldn’t be as near as before. It worked, now I can play 2hrs/d , sometimes another hour in the evening, and me and my piano live happy since then.... ❤️

You can be my neighbor anytime. :) In my country, any sort or form of music is NOT considered as noise. Except for the huge karaoke machines.

@JCyrusDGBB4 жыл бұрын
Evgeny Genchev I’m from the Philippines... Land of singers. Singing in the showers is not a thing here. Instead we occasionaly sing using a loud karaoke machine in most house parties. Musicians here gains a level of respect that people will not mind if they hear you practicing.

When I was flatting, with my sweet upright, I used to make sure I was only playing during the day. Then in the evenings I'd have both the left and middle pedals down - really did the trick! But we had a caretaker who would come in once or twice a week (they had a lot of work to do on the house next door). He would be humming along with the tune and yelling only good things through the window at me!

In the city - in old, wobbly apartments it is a challenge to house a heavy, loud instrument. Where I live, neighbours can hear each others conversation. :-( .... but hurrah for the Chamber Club, where I am a member with acces to a Steinberg grand :-) .....1½ -2½ hour a day. It will have to do.... Anyway, Chopin forbade his pupils to practice more than 2-2½ hours a day.

I dealt with cops in Tokyo and have had windows banged on by crazy neighbors in the afternoon. It is traumatic. If the wall creeks when I play, I freak out. I proactively greet neighbors and work work out agreements... and take breaks even though I don’t want to.... for example, I go full volume 40’minutes, break 30, muted practice 40, repeat. Music stops after sundown, no early morning practice. Hurts, but keeps the peace. I also make sure the neighbors have my phone number so they call me instead of the cops or the rental company.

I have had this problem since the age of 12. I had to throw out my piano last May. I have received three or four written complaints, the most recent of which was today for just listening to a recording on my monitors. I am in quite some pain at not being able to practice as I've spent years in lessons and lots of money.

As someone who has had many different digital pianos over the years, I can say that they are getting better and better to the point that we can hardly make the difference between a real and digital piano. I would highly recommend buying a good one if the neighbours are a problem. Also, go more a modelisation of the sound and not a sample of the sound, the sound will be much more realistic.

Hi there! I just got familiar with your channel! Very interesting! I am Italian based in India and an adult student player. I wish I would have started when I was just born... btw, I am lucky because I never got any problem so far although I have a vertical piano with the silent system... so at times I use it when I need to repeat over and over again the same passage... so neighbours won’t know I am so bad and my struggles... but they can enjoy my play through a piece 😄

I've been lucky with neighbors. Once, I was practicing later than usual, even for me. The neighbor pounded on the wall. I stopped, closed the bedroom door, and continued. Same reaction, so I stopped for the night. I saw him a day or two later. When I asked about it, he said that my playing normally helped him get to sleep, but not that night. No more complaints. For the last twelve years, I've been in my own house, so no problems. The nearest neighbor said he could hear my piano, occasionally. His wife, who was listening to our conversation, said that she hadn't realized that I HAD a piano.

Hello... I live in a building that has 20 duplex apartments and the sound inside an apartment unfortunately passed to other apartments... It's a very common problem with several buildings. But it's mine and I choose because of my big backyard to my children... but my kids, first the boy and then the girl (6 and half years of difference) decided to study music/cello... I decided to communicate to my close neighbours when my son started and all accepted well... in fact, when they realized that my daughter was with a cello (almost bigger than her, just 6 years old) at her back, they show very please... now my young neighbour, has the same age of my daughter and are both in the same class, and he also plays oboe and they play in the same orchestra! No, I don't live in Budapest, but on Porto, Portugal! How about that??? 🎻🎶🎻🎼🎵🎹🎶👧👨❤💙👂👏👏👏🎶🎶🎶
