in the 80s, two Soviet space probes were sent to Mars to study its moons Phobos and Deimos. The first probe failed after the Ruskis sent a faulty command sequence and it shut down. The second probe was mysteriously destroyed on approach to Deimos. When the Soviet Union collapsed, the last pictures sent by this probe were declassified - it showed it encountered a cigar shaped object in its last moments. At the time of the release of these pictures, it didn't mean much as it randomly encountering a cigar shaped object could be considered an irrelevant anomaly. Given what we've encountered since then, maybe not so much irrelevant. I wonder what Prof. Loeb thinks of this. We may have a problem here, as knocking out harmless exploratory probes does not quite seem the actions of a benevolent visitor. I hope I am wrong.

Abi Loeb is a very serious Scientist. And very Senior and experienced. The fact that he is under attack should rise the eyebrows of any thoughtful person. Why? Why attack anybody and everybody who talks about an interstellar object? If they don’t exist, why so much energy is being applied in suppressing the topic?
@TheNeonParadox
@TheNeonParadox 5 ай бұрын
He's not being suppressed. His work was published many times over. He's also not being attacked. His work is being criticized because that's what scientists are supposed to do. He, on the other hand, has spent the last eight years attacking other scientists because they won't just sit back and agree with his work, despite how immensely flawed it is. This is because the man cannot take even the most mild and constructive criticism. Look up his conversation with Dr. Jill Tarter (The scientist who was the inspiration for the female lead in the movie Contact) Avi is a classic case of Nobelitis. He is someone who left his field of expertise, and barged head first into a different field where he has very little knowledge beyond a general understanding. And in doing so, his frantic lunacy in the media has managed to make a laughing stock of actual scientists who are working in the fields of extraterrestrial science, and has set the field back decades. He's given congress all the motivation they need never to fund programs like SETI again, because now they can point to him and say, "We're not going to fund crackpots this him."

This is virtually the same comment I posted yesterday under Avi's interview with Dr. Brian Keating: I suddenly realized during this interview why I like and respect Avi Loeb as much as I do. Listening to him reminds me of how I felt listening to Richard Feynman. I see his absolute brilliance balanced by his down-to-Earth demeanor. Relying squarely on data driven evidence, he emanates the same why-should-I-care-what-other-people-think attitude as Feynman. He has an endearing sense of humor and, of, course, he retains the accent of the neighborhood he grew up in :-) His science, even his speculations, are so completely logical as to belie any notion of an agenda. He is centered, courageous and original. Viva Avi !

A large population of people will click on anything related to the supernatural, scary, or mysterious. We only look after "carbon based molecules in water solution under Earth conditions" based life. Nobody can say that this is the only form of life that can exist. It's like saying Turing machines can only be implemented with semi-conductors. But would we even recognize it, if we found other life forms? It may be like playing music on the moon. At the risk of sounding overly simplistic, the best way to determine whether or not something is real is when normal people (baseline levels of intelligence, education, and mental health)) don’t use the word “believe” when talking about it. For example, no one says that they “believe“ in dinosaurs, even though the idea that such creatures once roamed the Earth seems impossible to most of us. On the other hand, when speaking about whether or not extraterrestrials have ever visited us it’s always framed along the lines of “so, do you believe that aliens have ever visited us? If you ever hear someone say “are you worried about all the aliens who are visiting us? “It’s a sure sign of very low IQ, scant educational background, and/or mental illness.
@ibbajibbaduay

Very well, but whose idea was it to both include 'aliens' in the title of this episode, and then lament that 'the media' always does that? I would love to hear an account of Avi's rise to public prominence that does not refer to his/the public's interest in 'aliens'. It's not necessarily his fault that the nuance of his views might not always be captured, but inescapably, trying to be an ambassador for science presents one with the same set of incentives as anyone else who likes popularity and money. There's a fine line between admirably nurturing child-like wonder and cynically playing into people's fantasies, and it's hard to completely rule out the latter.

I'd like to know what the chances are, of Galileo hitting a planet when it encounters its first solar system. Now, I can't be bothered to do the maths, but I have a feeling that winning LOTTO 10 times in a row is more likely. This eliminates the possibility that what hit Earth was artificial. And are we to assume that "space aliens" are sophisticated enough to create a probe which can cross light years, but can't avoid colliding with its target planet? Even though the sun moves through the interstellar aether, and the Earth moves around the Sun, like a corkscrew through its galactic orbit. I am terribly sorry Avi, but that is a step far too far. It's not evidence, so much as "clutching at straws", I think. If it has propulsion, then it shouldn't hit our atmosphere and burn up, yeah? And its speed is to be expected: interstellar objects DO actually accelerate as they are pulled sunwards - yeah? The Sun's gravity is large indeed.

I would have asked him what percentage of our spacecraft, Voyager etc would be iron? I suspect very little, i really can't imagine advanced aliens building interstellar probes with a high iron content. I don't doubt it's an interstellar object, but I really don't think it's an engineered object, it's not going to be a spacecraft with an iron content of 84%. I would expect an alien spacecraft to be made of all sorts of seriously exotic low-mass synthetic materials we can't even imagine. Our new material Graphene is 200 times stronger than steel, super light and conducts electricity like copper. It's an excellent aerospace material, but it's not metal, there's no iron in it.

maybe the abundance is different to most meteorites because it's formation was created at different energy states , such as another stars combined mass gravitation losing it through collision and achieving escape velocity or supernovae propelling it and maybe this explains the exotic outgassing of that thin cigar asteroid as it energises differently until perhaps stabilising to the local system. humans are born autodidacts and remain that way their entire life, but most cultures suppress it because it's nearly impossible to control. Most people just forget they have this natural capability, although it manifests itself in many interesting and unusual ways... peace and cheers

Michael, it's a loooooong history... But I helped a UFO group here in Brazil for a couple of years, more than a decade ago... (I started as a believer because of dark spots in pictures I took, but then progressed to become a skeptical...) So, what I used to tell to the crazy types (and they wanted to skin me off) was: go to one of those places where you say those objects use to show up and freaking shoot one down. This way we could take it to a lab and study it! I could easily accept aliens visits us. They should exist out there and, although what our physics says, we don't know everything. So who the heck knows... But without evidence it gets really difficult. That's why I like what dr. Loeb is trying to do.

What would be the speed of an object like Voyager (whose speed was mostly derived from gravitational influence of other planets gravity 'slingshooting') arriving at the nearest star in its path vs. the speed of the object Avi is searching for?
@HellCatt0770
@HellCatt0770 Жыл бұрын
If it came from outside our solar system then the speed of this meteor is what would be expected. Objects from within our system are captured in orbits prior to entering our atmosphere therefore traveling much slower.
@furorz

@@HellCatt0770 Objection your honor, non responsive. I was wondering what the speed of an object like the Voyager would be when it reaches the nearest star system. The Voyager started from our solar system and didn't get captured in orbit around anything else

Everyone should keep an open mind. But you're not doing yourself any favors by pimping yourself out for your book deal before you make any of the evidence and science available for anyone else. Using your station at Harvard and seat on various committees to sell copies of your books. I feel it's also disingenuous to tease "they could be voyager-like probes, that's what we'd do!" Sure, there's absolutely a chance for that to be true, but stick to what the science shows. If it requires more analysis, don't give people hope and what-ifs, just say it does. How Avi interrupts and dismisses genuine criticism of his overzealous nature with this is telling.

Avi Loeb is a highlight of intellect and brilliant humor. It is very human that he suffers the jealousy of the mediocre only talking individuals in the scientific community.

Prof Loeb appears to be somewhat disingenuous at 1:31:26 when he says "we did not address technological origins". That being so, on what basis does his paper's conclusions state: ".. ..Another possibility is that this unfamiliar abundance pattern [beryllium, lanthanum, uranium ] may reflect an extraterrestrial technological origin. .. ..". Nevertheless a very interesting & worthwhile project by Loeb & Co in pursuance of cosmic archaeology.

Micrometeors fall onto Earth every-single day... I've watched a video of a guy who collects them from rooftops. As long as he is accurate about the materials being from outside the solar system because finding millimeter-sized spherical metals is not surprising in itself...🤷

Aren't skeptics just enforcers of the perceived elitist status quo. To me, skeptics are not much different than politicians, or lawyers, their relationship with the scientific method is about the same, tentative at best.
