This is the best review of the X-H1 one I've seen to date. You stayed away from reciting the spec sheet back to the viewer, and you focused on whats most important to many users in the real world. What a refreshing change. Also, this is the *only* review I've seen to date that discusses how Fuji put considerably more engineering into the lens mount's robustness and stiffness to accomodate long, fast, heavy prime telephoto lenses. As a motorsports photographer, this is quite important to me. Very well done! Thank you.

I just bought one of these this week..and I LOVE it! Everyone talks about it for video but I got it for photography. Reasons - 1. Ibis helps when shooting longer lenses in low light Eg. I can shoot my 90mm at 1/60 instead of 1/125 which can make the difference between iso 12800 and 6400 (note: I can go as low as 1/10 but since I shoot moving subjects that would create too much motion blur) 2. That grip!! I LOVE that grip! Yea you can add grips to Fuji’s other cameras but I really just adore the grip and it makes using larger lenses so much better! 3. The shutter mechanism is like you said-AMAZING! The smoothness of the shutter makes getting camera shake free images that much easier. That being said, now that the XT4 is out it offers more in a smaller package, BUT you can get the xh1 for 800 or less used, that’s amazing! The camera cost about the same as a a7iii when it came out! I know I’m gonna be snatching another one of these to replace my secondary xt2!

This is by far the definitive review of the X-H1 as it currently stands, and refreshingly honest about some of the issues. My take on it right now is I’d only use it if I owned and wanted to use MF lenses for video, as the AF has very severe issues; not just the inability to find focus, but the pulsing even when it does which would be a complete deal breaker on a bigger screen. I’m on the fence about this or a GH5, or an A7riii for hybrid use...
@LeeZavitz6 жыл бұрын
Great review. The video AFC reminds me of the gh5 (before 179shutter) and it’s erratic behaviour. Even if it’s at 100%DR. What I don’t understand is how a picture profile/DR setting can affect the autofocus unless it’s doing the autofocus processing after image processing which seems dumb because people use different picture profile settings. I always assumed it used the raw sensor data to do af processing first. I’m not an engineer but it makes more sense.
@EvidentlySomething6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lee! My guess is that higher dynamic range takes its toll on getting the maximum out of the sensor and therefore the processing might be affected, becoming slower in terms of actually computing the image thats coming in. Fujifilm just announced a first software update for the X-H1. Not addressing the AF bugs just yet, though. Nevertheless I like how they at least do care about updating. Even bringing new life to older models from time to time as you know. Saw your first impression video of the X-H1, did you end up getting one for yourself?

Evidently Something Yes I bought one. I’ve been using it now since it came out and everything on the photo side is Just awesome! (except how soft my shutter button is compared to my friends xh1) As for video I’m not really as impressed. The ibis is to erratic and janky for me to want to use it. The autofocus in video is also erratic and never works in same way twice so you can’t even predict its behaviour. I’d rather shoot with it off as it looks unnatural. I do like the linear manual focusing though. And I plan to try out some follow focus on it in the near future. Obviously Fuji will fix some of the issues with firmware but I feel like it might have been rushed to market a little early.

Some KZbinrs report worse auto focus on Sony cameras with S-log. I don't think the RAW sensor data is used for the auto-focus. There's a LOT of data coming from the RAW sensor. Sony's downsample 6K to 4K and each pixel has 12bits, just imagine that data rate if it was RAW! AF processors can't handle that much data. I think image pipeline works kind of like this: RAW sensor data -> Picture profile processor -> AF processor I think the AF processor is quite weak, as its mostly software based. Software based systems are what makes things like eye AF possible. Eye AF would be exponentially harder with a hardware based processor. The picture profile processor conforms the RAW data into a smaller colour space set by the picture profile settings. It'll apply ISO gain, gamma curves, colour matrices and force it into 8-10bit. If the AF processor taps into the output of that, then obviously the AF processor will be working with different data. If AF processor doesn't tweak detection thresholds based on picture profile settings then low contrast profiles will obviously make it harder. You could make the AF processor tap into its own picture profile processor but it would add complexity.

Thank you for a balanced and objective review. I have owned several Fuji X cameras including the XT-2 which was my favorite. The lack of IBIS was a huge consideration because for stills I would have to increase ISO to ensure sharpness in certain situations. IBIS is a game changer for me especially for lenses without OIS and primes. Your review provides me information I can use to make an informed decision.

I agree. I have the xt2 and ordered both the Xt3 and xh1. Keeping the xh1 for IBIS. I can shoot my 90mm at F2 1/30, ISO 500 for low light portraits or still subjects. With the xt2 and xt3 I have to shoot F2, 1/320, ISO 6400. Big difference in IQ being able to shoot lower shutter speeds.

Very good to see your video! I have my video AF settings to AF Area, AF-C focus mode and +2 speed at DR100% and I'm consistently getting great results. AF-C makes the difference from my experience and is obviously not the default setting. To say this camera is great and is certainly an upgrade from the venerable XT-2. Slow motion videos with the 100-400mm with the TC 1.4x on are better than I would have ever expected. I agree on the video presets. Switching from photo to video mode is very cumbersome, and this can be fixed as you said
@gordonrussell766 жыл бұрын
Workaround, I use the silent video mode and have majority of settings for video preset, usually I only have to adjust ISO, SS is preset to 1/48th. The only downside of this is you have to use touch screen to adjust any settings, which if like me you hate touch screens is a pain, until I discovered that you only have to hit the Touchscreen once the settings section and then once the menu comes up you can navigate and change settings using Joystick. This means that in your example of switching instead of 5 steps for me its between 1-3, switch to video on drive dial, and then if exposure is not right, hit touchscreen, scroll to iso with joystick click and then change ISO. This takes me about 5 seconds.

Klasse. This is probably the only review you'll need to watch if you're interested in the X-H1. And I do hope Fuji takes note of the issues. Their firmware response will decide if I finally do buy this or not. Unless Samsung really does come out with an NX-2 :-) Which drone were you using and how easy was it to match with Eterna?
@EvidentlySomething6 жыл бұрын
Hey Marq! Thanks a lot for your kind words! I'm fairly certain Fuji will deliver. They have always done so in the past and they are the best in the business when in comes to software updates. Are there actually rumors about a new NX2?! That would be awesome! The drone footage was filmed with the Mavic Pro. It is pretty easy to grade, when you're recording in the D-Log profile.
@marqriley94606 жыл бұрын
Rumours are rumours, sometimes they're true, other times wishful thinking. They are however a cure for Gear Acquisition Syndrome, because you always expect something better to be around the corner, and end up buying nothing at all :-) Now I was hoping the X-H1 was the unicorn camera that got it all right, but it's clear the IBIS is not as smooth as Panasonic or Olympus (or even the Pentax K-5 back then) and that video autofocus is unfortunate. So now I'm between getting the X-H1 and waiting for a fix in firmware, or waiting to see if an NX2 materializes, or a long-shot Nikon FF mirrorless (but probably without IBIS), or wait till Photokina and get a Mavic Pro 2 in June. It's hard being a hybrid photographer/filmmaker :-)

Just bought a used X-H1 to use it along with my X-E3 together with Fuji´s zoom like the 10-24/ 16-80 and the Fujicron primes. Basically I wanted a better grip and the IBIS to use it with my vintage lenses like the Canon FD 1,4/50, 1,2/85 and Nikon 2,8/80-200. I am basically happy with the performance of the XTrans III Sensor, mainly doing still photography and only occassionally doing vlogging. Picture quality is superb - even compared with my full frame Nikon D750 and at a fraction of the price of a X-T4 with the build quality of Made in Japan its a steal in 2021 - at least that´s my thinking when I went for it...

Many people praise this review as a whole (which is true) but the choice of music is also brilliant. Big thumb up for that from me! As for the camera: it's the same price territory as A7ii (it's old, I know). So the big question is: FF or APSC for stills? And it's even harder to answer since FF Sony is actually smaller. Dang. I just cannot make up my mind on that.

huge deals on xh1 right now. b&h has it for $999 but even better with the 8-16mm lens which is a $2,000 lens you can get the camera for $300. Even if you don't want the lens you could sell it and get the xh1 for a crazy good deal.

fantastic and balanced review well done. Regarding preset and switching between Stills and Video I use the silent video mode and have majority of settings for video preset, usually I only have to asjust ISO SS is preset to 1/48th.
