NIGHT TERRORS I’m getting sleepy and my eyes are receding I lose consciousness & my breathing is needy I’m dreaming & my heart rate starts increasing My eyes open wide, what the Hell am I seeing? I see this figure above me ready to receive me Best believe me, my heart beats really beating I jolt up out of bed quickly and my skins prickly The figures gone! Am I safe? Not particularly! I’m still asleep but visually I can see all vividly Suspiciously I’m in bed again feeling the intensity I’m wide awake now; I can’t go to sleep instantly This has been my history and also my misery But Could this be my PTSD? My eyes saw things that still greet me I see ghosts from the distant past Remembering times I caught beatings From Grandpa and Dad! Or was it me sitting in Boys homes all mad What a sham! Where was my fam when I was feeling neglected or sad? Could this be why I’m dreaming? Seeing things that must have a meaning? These Night Terrors really have me reeling! Feeling all types of ways & it’s to God I’m pleading! Or Could this be my Depression? Having to be raised with aggression? Then tossed to the side like trash? Or those times I had to make a dash? Falling asleep like an idiot By the railroad tracks? Or getting the belt all over my Arms, legs and back! & going back to school after the attacks? If you even care? I had another nightmare while sleeping in my chair I felt something biting my foot to my despair I tried to jump but fell hitting the wall, somehow Splitting my brow! Blood started dripping now I’m hitting the ground, wife ran to the door scared She opened it & saw me bloody, sore & not there I finally woke up & saw fear in my wife’s eyes I was dazed & surprised, damn the lights bright Things didn’t feel right, but I did gain my sight Why do I occasionally fall victim in the night? This is why I try to fight, and often times I write Just to let out the plight that has my mind Wound tight! Could it be the fact Mom bounced? And my Dad left unannounced? Or because Grandpa & Dad were a grouch? Always ready to throw their weight around? Or maybe it was the 5 high schools? And I always had to follow tight rules Or get my body bruised So I got bad grades & got picked on Only because my life was on a sick one Or maybe because I was mentally abused I was called a market street bum At the age of 12! What the f could I do? I would never amount to anything to you Or even those times I had to run from more heat Landing in MacLaren Hall at the age of 14 This is what my future had for me So this is why I have terrors in the night Thank God it’s only occasionally now Because I can sleep without any fright I’ll have small ones and God awful ones But no obstacle comes without it’s strife I just want to know why it’s my Family holding that knife?
