This video is about trying to make my 1991 Evinrude 30hp run better. When you running just over idle. A fellow youtuber suggested changing the timing a little bit. This video is the change and how it went out on the water. If you want to read his comment it is under the Reeds Replace video.

I have a used 89 25hp Evinrude I picked up pretty cheap... low hours! It sputtered exactly as you described, and needed a shot of starter fluid to start... before finding your video, I rebuilt the carburetor! It ran a hair better, but not much... Praise the Lord for this video! It made dramatic improvement immediately... I played with the timing advance fine tuning it, amd it runs like a champ now... starts no starter fluid! No oil in water! The only thing I added that wasn't in this video was to tighten the throttle linkage so there was not a big gap of free play before acceleration kicked in from idle... Better starting, better running, better power low and top end, better fuel economy! Runs smooth! Motor runs better than it may have ever run, and it's 2023! Thank you, and God Bless 🙌

I am not sure if it has the same set up, If it were mine I would give it a try. I was surprised how well that motor ran, I thought it might have just been the new reeds so I change the timing back to see how it ran. It ran just like it did before I change the reeds out. That little timing adjustment made that motor run great.

Been suffering with this problem for ages, 10 minutes setting up as show in this video and the engine is now running sweet, even getting another 5 knots top end from getting the butterfly fully open. Thanks for the video👍

yeah i live in the mountains. the year of my motor is 83 35 hp carburetor is spotless i rebuilt the whole motor bought new tank and everything. but it is very hard on fuel. 2 miles uses about 1/4 tank of gas but seems to be running good idles good just seems rich.

Right at 3:00 on the video, you are setting the throttle control rod set screw with the throttle wide-open (I assume the carb's butterfly valve is horizontal at that point). But it looks like the throttle lever is not turned in at all. Am I looking at this wrong? Thanks in advance for any input.

I just subscribed, any idea if that will work on a 72 20hp johnson? when i seen the thumb nail for this video i thought your motor was from the seventies because the cowl is similar to mine in shape. Yeah just got mine running and took it out on the boat today issue it is spittering and sputtering at idle or low speed, the knob for rich lean has to set all the way lean in order for it tp run with less spittering and sputtering but there is still a few coughs every 5 seconds

Love your channel. You've helped a new outboard mechanic learn things that I can easily do at home. I have a 1991 30hp that I am trying to get back in shape right now and throttle linkage is the step I am on right now. So my question is, when you are talking about the 1/4 to 1/2 inch do you mean that the butterfly should not start to open until after that distance from the two timing notches? Sincerely, I appreciate all your videos on this motor. Cannot thank you enough. I've been a 4x4 mechanic for 20 years so outboards are a bit new to me.

What's happening here is that INITIAL TIMING is being set back a bit; that allows you to open the throttle a crack to allow more airflow through the motor at low speed. High speed performance won't be affected because there's an advance LIMIT that you hit at 1/2 to 2/3rds throttle anyway. After that it's all carburator, not timing.

Great video! At the 1:22 mark the timing goes from between the two to the updated 1/4-1/2" past. How did that happen? Did you just move it by hand or did you go thru a whole timing adjustment to get that extra? Thank you!

I turned the throttle handle to move the timing. Then I adjusted the linkage to make this the new starting point before the butter fly in the carb moves.

On my jon boat I added a good water separator fuel filter. Every time I seem to get gas I ended up with trash in the carb. Thanks for commenting..

At lowest throttle position where is your cam roller now? Just before the two hash marks?

You have to have motor in gear to get that last adjustment correct so the throttle can go full?

That's correct in gear for WOT for the butter fly to be horizontal.

Hi! At first i´d like to tell you that your vids are great! I watch them from Austria! I have nearly the same engine as you. A Johnson 25 2 Stroke from 99. After my carburetor rebuild i did the linkage adjustment from your former video. The adjustment there was that the cam follower has to be just in the middle of the marks, exactly when the butterfly starts to move !? So, in this video you explain, that it should be 1/2 inch before the marks. what does the service bullentin exactly say? now im confused whats right. Thank you so much.

The service bulletin said that if when you are running your motor just a little over idle and the engine has a cough. Change the factory setting of the cam follower contacting the the cam between the two marks. Set the cam between one quarter to one half inch before the two marks. This change to the timing the low speed cough will be gone. When I change my motor from the factory settings to the new setting the motor ran great.

what does the roller look like when the throttle is wide open. Is it still in the same place off the timing marks??

Great video mate👍, quick question when I back my throttle right off my cam roller isn't between the two timing marks like yours is, it's in front of them how do you wind it back as my motor won't idle it stalls unless you crack the throttle a little

The place where the marks and the roller come in is when the butterfly in the carb starts to move. The cam roller should be just past the marks. The roller does not stay there when you back off the throttle. Be sure to let me know if this helps clear it up.

That timing change has alot to do with the cylinders being oblong. Look to see just how much that crankshaft walks as it idles up. How much the flywheel rises up and down with the RPMs is a good thing to gauge your timing adjustments to. Old timers' tricks, keep them alive

I also have a 28 spl that we're having some issue with. I have yet to check this timing and carburator set up. Not really sure why we're having issues, it used to run real good, now it sneezes, coughs itself right out at low rpm, but at wide open throttle it seems alright

So when it's in idle the roller should be between two mark's of the cam plate? Its it's different from model to other I've johnson 35 hp 1981 and having problem with timing the throttle

I have not done much with a 35hp. All I am doing is changing the timing a little at the slow idle. That way it don't cough and quit.

RickJ is my name . This is first time to respond to one of your videos. I have really learned a lot by watching your videos when you work on your outboards. I am a county guy that loves the chickens and dogs also in your video backgrounds. I do have a 25 Evinrude 1991 and now have purchased a 25 HP Johnson 1993. Both are very similar to your 30 HP Evinrude. I am trying to get the settings right on the throttle for timing, as well as, setting or retarding the timing. Both engines use electric starter and control boxes. How do you retard the timing in your video and adjust the throttle and it goes back to the two points position? Do I put the control handle all the way open forward, then loosen the screw and push rod forward and tighen? I just can not understand how you are doing this trick. Please help. Thanks for your time.

The main idea here is setting the timing so that the roller is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch past the double marks before the butterfly in the carburetor starts to open. Also when the throttle is wide open that the butterfly is horizontal. I might not have been as clear as I could have.

So, what you did was to move the roller to that spot 1/4 to a 1/2 manually by hand, and did not adjust the throttle linkage on side of your engine at all, then set the roller screw on carb and reset the open throttle screw to that setting. So, when you went back and throttled a couple of times it was back to the correct 2 timing marks. Is this a correct assumption? Again thanks for your reply. Keep up the good work and videos.

I have a 1997 Evinrude 9.9 omc 2 stroke and can not get it to crank over . when i prime the gas primer i notice gas leaking fast and hard from what looks like the air box. I put the fast idle lever in the right spot and prime it and gas pissing everywhere . Am I doing something wrong . I have no clue any input would be huge. thanks

You have a flooding carburator. Take it apart and clean it; there's dirt in the needle/seat assembly keeping it from shutting off the fuel. Also, don't squeeze the bulb TOO hard or you'll just overload the needle and force it open. It's designed to work with normal fuel pump pressure. In fact, on old Merc's, operators did that DELIBERATELY to 'prime' the motor because they had really crappy choke butterflies and the motor wouldn't pull fuel.

I have a 30hp evinrude 2stroke shorfthaft. And it starts up fine ideles pretty Good. But when I get on the throttle it goes to around 60% than it just doesn't go higher rpm

I would check the high speed orifice in the bottom of the carburetor then I would check the synchronization and linkage adjustments. Be sure and let me know what you find.

On the 91/92 year model the TR carburetor the high speed orifice is at the back of the carb on the bowl and the intermediate air bleed orifice is above the carb air in let. You know the low speed is the slow speed mixture screw. The slow speed mixture screw is the only one you can adjust. The others you have to buy a different size if your in the mountains. Make sure everything is clean before set the carb.

My motor has a high speed Orifice right behind the primer nipple. So there is no adjustment other than make sure it is all clean. Check out my video how the carburetor works kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJDcopaEf9aUmLc and the only other part to look for is make sure the carburetor is adjusted so the throttle plate is not going past the horizontal position.

I would not be afraid to buy one if it look good and had good compression. I bought one new in 1977 that was a really good motor, It was still running strong when I sold it in the late 80s. When I was working on a 1970 Evinrude I had to wait a long time to get OEM tune up parts for it. Video Evinrude Fisherman.

The electrical system is the weakest link. I run every motor I have in salt water. Just kept all the seals in place.
