Why is she being criticized for having good vocal technique.... If good technique is boring then i want to be boring forever

She is just unreal. By far the most well-rounded Evita I've seen. (not better just the most well rounded) Patti is great.

Wow! That's a hell of a song to sing without all the dancing. Amazing. Love it!

She has got that star quality. I wonder if head mic was used during this run? Her vibrato is close to Patty Lupone. Lupone set a standard for me. She out her heart in this song and sung like there was no tomorrow or care for her voice.

I love Patti, Elena, and Caroline, their Evas are very different but equally interesting in my opinion. I love being able to experience such diverse performances, each one of them is amazing, just in a different way. I did like Madonna's performance but more as a fun new take on the role, definitely do not look at her performance in the same way I look at Broadway Evas, you can't compare people who are not in the same category when it comes to their vocal skills. Madonna can sing her songs just fine, but she has no theatrical singing training, and the fact that they had to change the keys for her for the movie feels like a slap in the face to the people who wrote the score.

Lyrics: What's new Buenos Aires? I'm new--I want to say I'm just a little stuck on you You'll be on me too! I get out here Buenos Aires Stand back--you ought to know what'cha gonna get in me Just a little touch of star quality! Fill me up with your heat, with your noise, with your dirt, overdo me Let me dance to your beat, make it loud. let it hurt, run it through me Don't hold back you are certain to impress Tell the driver this is where I'm staying Hello Buenos Aires! Get this--just look at me, dressed up somewhere to go We'll put on a show! Take me in at your flood, give me speed, give me lights, set me humming Shoot me up with your blood, wine me up with your nights, watch me coming All I want is a whole lot of excess Tell the singer this is where I'm playing Stand back Buenos Aires! Because you ought to know what'cha gonna get in me Just a little touch of star quality! And if ever I go too far It's because of the things you are Beautiful town--I love you And if I need a moment's rest Give your lover the very best Real eiderdown--and silence You're a tramp, you're a treat, you will shine to the death, you are shoddy But you're flesh, you are meat, you shall have every breath in my body Put me down for a lifetime of success Give me credit--I'll find ways of paying Rio de la Plata! Florida! Corrientes! Nueve de Julio! All I want to know! Stand back Buenos Aires! Because you oughta know what'cha gonna get in me Just a little touch of Just a little touch of Just a little touch of star quality!

Much stronger than Elena Roger but it could be one of a thousand musical theatre belty soprano's. One note of LuPone and you know exactly who it is and she sang the whole thing in chest

Officially CANNOT wait to see this next week. Dream show, dream role, and she's seemingly incredible. Yes, she made some different choices than Lupone and I completely appreciate what I've seen of her interpretation. It's a demanding role and I can't wait to see her knock it out of the park :)

I grew up listen to Patti sing this role...to me she is and will always be the voice of Evita. I can't help it. I will always compare whoever sings this role to her. I think it's true with whomever you "first" heard in a performance. Whether it's Idina in Wicked or Lea in Miss Saigon...it's very hard to get away from the originals. Doesn't make anyone more/less talented, just a matter of preference. IMO. I didn't even know this show was coming to Charlotte until tonight - snatched 2 box seats!

Although she's good, her technique amazing, she sounds too "Broadway girlie", if that makes any sense. It lacks the explosiveness of previous Evas, that "oomph". But to be fair, I do have a strong dislike to this iteration of Evita as a whole.

I beg to differ. I heard Patti sing at 54 Below this summer, and she sings the Evita score with more power and emotion in her 60s than this young lady. It is always wonderful to see what a new artist brings to the role, but Patti's longevity is due to her unique vocal pyrotechnics accompanied by her classic training (Julliard). I am all for recognition to new talent, but not at the expense of one of the greats like Miss Lupone.

My point exactly. DON'T compare artists. Remember...you were the one who started this by saying that Caroline was stronger vocally than Patti. Every artist has a contribution to make and the evaluation of their artistry does not have to be made in comparison to another, in this case the Tony winning originator of the role.

I personally feel like her vocals lack the energy required to pull off this role. I don't hear the passion and excitement in her voice that should be conveyed during such a beloved part of the show. I don't mean to come across as hateful but it just feels like she tries to compensate by shouting her high notes at the end and it detracts from the character.

Her voice is a little too "I studied musical theatre all my life" for my taste. She sings very well, but there is no...fire. When LuPone sings, whether you like her or not, there is no doubt you are listening to Patti LuPone. I've found that to be true of most greats. Ms. Bowman is obviously talented, she could easily get lost in the shuffle of other singers with similar voices. I blame vocal coaches and voice teachers for this. Let's go back to the days of teaching people to sing beautifully and healthily, without compromising their natural voice and style.

RamajX I think composers and producers are equally, if not more, at fault. In order to handle these insane roles (which really started with Eva) and grueling schedules (8 show weeks plus media appearances in the morning, or on your day off) without doing long term vocal damage, singers need to forgo certain style aspects in favor of technical aspects, which leads to a lot of people sounding the same. Voice coaches are trying to train students for the world of theatre today. They can't go back to the old days of teaching without composers going back to the old days of writing.
@RamajX

wickedphant0m I hear you, but I respectfully disagree with your sentiments. Young singers can be taught to sing healthily while maintaining individuality of sound and style. Ms. Lupone has maintained her voice quite well nearly 40 years after Evita. Audra McDonald, though she tends to mix rather than belt, has incredible technique and an instantly identifiable sound. I'm not saying we need to go back to the days of Ethel Merman belting out Cole Porter and Bea Arthur talk-singing Jerry Herman. I am saying that there are far too many nasally, non-distinct, yet pitch perfect singers out there. There's a reason why audiences were far more taken by Fantasia singing Celie than they were by Broadway vet LaChanze (despite Fantasia missing several shows due to vocal problems.) There is a happy medium, and that's what I'd like to see encouraged. Healthy voices with natural distinct sounds.

um..... she's ok. the dancing suuucked and whoever plays Che need to go. Ever since the 1996 movie, the music score for the stage has been lowered and sounds shitty compared to the original broadway cast.

hahahahhahaha madonna didn't even remotely compare to singers like this. i have nothing against madonna, but she is not a Broadway performer in any way shape or form - they had to lower most of the songs so she could reach them :d Now THIS... Caroline Bowman... with that BELT... agh! Flawless. THIS is a real star. And a true performance.

John Galt Well actually, when Madonna did the movie they had to change the keys because of her short range (about 2 octaves) she was incapable of singing the original music.

John Galt In all fairness, Madonna did the worst of them all. Vocally, at least. Madonna didn't sing one difficult high note and arranged everything for an easier interpretation.
