The awards ceremony here is so wholesome... This makes me miss watching melee in the mid 2010s. Everyone is smiling/laughing with each other, looking so young and energetic. A lot of people didn't like Leffen and HBox at the time for being sore losers but both of them seem to be very happy here. Hbox lifting up Armada's arm to acknowledge him was great!

I think they were right to boo hbox. There were players with more skill then him that deserved to get into top 8 more then he did but he gets through because he plays a super gimmicky and frustrating character that stalls games to time. Considering that this is the melee communities one chance to show itself off in front of all the other fighting games at evo, it's not fair to the people who fought so hard to get melee on the main stage that he makes the game look boring and tedious by stalling games and frustrating his opponents

matt fellowes yea, i disagree with you Matt. You have to play with characters a certain way to have a shot at winning. In a Falco vs Fox match if both players were to just try to be on the offensive the whole time, Fox would win a lot. that means that in that match up Falco has to be more patient and spacey if he wants to win against Fox. Hbox's technique is the same except Jigglypuff needs to be super spacey against basically all it's opponents. If it IS a bullshit way to win then why is there only one really noticeable puff player? wouldn't more people be taking advantage of puff's slow gimmickry gameplay to place top 3 in 3/3 EVOs?

In all honesty, I can see that mindset. I think the corruption of upsets demolished the possibilities of really hype sets, like PPMD vs. Mango/Leffen or Mango vs. Armada/Leffen. The fact that Hbox was on the majority of the stream in top 8 (5 sets, Armada in WS, Mango in LQ, Plup in LS, PPMD in LF's and Armada again in GF's) is another factor of what I think caused people into disliking top 8, especially as he was winning in a way the audience deceived. Lack of close matches in finals also, and just overall the fact that the whole of top 8 was not Bo5. I enjoyed this tournament for what it is. Amazing sportsmanship by Hbox and It's nice to see that Hbox won't let the hate get to him. Congrats to Armada for the win, at the end of the day it's a gift to see Armada's amazing smile and look so happy, he really worked hard and deserved that win.

HungryBox beating Leffen and mang0 also weren't upsets, but also certainly not a surprise for the former, either. The latter being a surprise or not, however, is debatable. The way I categorized this is like this: Upset = unexpected event, not something remotely sad or disappointing Surprise = not a win, but a close match that the majority didn't expect, but the favored player ends up winning Hbox has a losing record to Mang0, in like the last 8 years or so the record is like 27-4 in Mango's favor, so Hbox beating him was unexpected, because it's rare. After game 1 nobody was expecting Hbox to beat Mango. Hbox also has lost the last 2 sets off of Leffen convincingly, so Leffen was in favor of beating him and everyone put Leffen beating Hbox in their 'fantasy drafts' of top 32 meaning Armada vs. Leffen would happen, not Armada vs. Hbox. Hbox then beat him 2-0 and popped off due to the unexpected, yet happy win.

Man Hbox poured his heart out on this game. You could tell he really REALLY wanted this. I was actually very impressed with how hard he pushed Armada to play. He had a much stronger showing than i expected him to. Leffen losing to a samus is pretty nice irony though. Decent Evo, but a little surprising.

People get so mad about Hungrybox and his puff. He's playing a character that has the ability to space really well and punish super hard. He's playing against a character that has a distinct advantage, with moves that can kill puff quickly and effectively, sometimes at 50%. When hbox uses ledge invincibility, or walls out his opponent, its called "stalling", "planking", "cheesing". If Armada spends 3/4 of the match lasering from one side of the stage, its called "smart defensive strategy". Anything puff does, or even what mid-low tiers do, is called a gimmick because its not waveshining or diving off stage like falcon. Something works and people figure stuff out but its all just cheese because it doesn't involve fast movement or precise timing. The toxic community bias is too real. So you didn't get to see two spacies duke it out, waiting to see which one could kill the other with another shine combo. Youre not the one playing so the ones playing to win, because so much is on the line, are gonna do as they please. I'm not trying to take anything from Armada because he played fucking amazing. But its ridiculous to see people get so mad at something that worked, something that got Hbox 2nd at the largest tournament ever. For some people it was boring sure. But for me, personally, I liked it because it felt like it was constant edge of your seat play, where one mistake could cause a death, who would get caught first and would they die?

Hbox looks so different fighting Armada in GF than in winners. Either he purposely hid tricks while in winners knowing he would have another chance to face him or he methodologically pondered over Armada's habits while waiting between matches. Great adaptation regardless. If this Hbox and Armada had met in winners we might have had a very different result. I like how he tried ledge camping in the first match, realized it wouldn't work anymore, and so just decided fuck it and goes all out. Props to Armada for being able to pull it through.

Ok Armada played outta his mind in this haywire tournament of a lot of new stand out players this year and he won 1st place of the biggest smash tournament of All Time.. and he DOMINATED. How is he not the best.. I definitely have Armada #1 and although Hungrybox made it to 2nd, I don't think he's the 2nd best player in the world. I'd have PPMD #2 and Leffen #3, Plup was just a wildcard no one was prepared for at God-level. so I don't really knock Leffen down after winning 1st place 3 tournaments in a row beating Armada, Hungrybox, and Mango.

Armada and PP established top 2 of course. but how has Leffen not made a statement being top 5, top 3 this year? He's destroyed Mango multiple times this year, Beat Armada a few times too and long past that M2K hump after 4 stocking him. Also winning 3 tourneys in a row 1st place. He's definitely made his way into around Top 3 Gods. and arguably best Fox. Only Armada is better when he's having a good day.

tom whitehead Well Armada consistently beats everybody so he's definitely #1. Hungrybox for some reason only performs well at Evo, and M2K never quite gets first. This year lots of people have improved and Armada's stepped up his Fox to beat many gods and become 1 of if not the best Fox out there. Same for Leffen. Armada has consistently showed up at GFs, Won many tourneys, and won 1st place at the biggest melee tournament of all time. If that doesn't speak volume then Idk what does. PPs only played in 2 tourneys but he's placed 1st and 3rd, so if you ask anyone, they'll say PP is easily a top 3 player. Leffen this year has really shined as possibly the best Fox placing 3rd at Apex n Paragon, and 1st at BEAST 5 and CEO, and 5th at EVO which isn't too bad considering 2thousand players. And Mango has been straight bustering this year, ask anyone. He hasn't won a single tournament over 300 people this year. He didn't make it to GFs at BESAT5, Apex, CEO, or EVO. He's not lower than Hungrybox/M2K but he's not up there with Armada/PPMD/Leffen who have actually won this year. So every player does sorta have a categorized ranking in many people's eyes.

That is likely because Armada was known as being the best, so even getting second place is a huge defeat, whereas Hbox wasn't the best until EVO 2016.

I expected armada to at least play one game with peach, I know peach/puff match up isn't really good for peach, but I know he wants to win and knowing how fighting games can be it's understandable for him to go to fox since he wants the W. Although he's playing really lame, it takes a lot of skill to do so at the level he's playing at.

Holy fucking shit. Go to 15:37 and check armada's tech out there. The rest hitbox clanks the shine hitbox, and since shine gives invincibility, armada doesn't get hit by the rest and gets a free punish. Fucking incredible.

I just finished watching the 2016 Evo and saw h boxes victory. armada was mad salty at the end of that one. and yet hbox gave armada the props he deserved with out acting like a sore looser. that's says alot about h boxes humbleness and integrity. can't really say the same for armada. hbox is a good sport, armada isnt. it's just a game dude. get over it man

Actually, I didn't even give a shit about who won. All I said was that I found Fox boring to watch because a lot of people play him. I said nothing else, and to confirm, I'm well aware of what characters were played at EVO. Also, to state, I'm really glad Armada won! He deserved it, and I enjoy seeing him happy, like many others. He's come so far, huh? To be honest, I would have been fine if PP, Mango or even Leffen won, but I'm happy Armada pulled through.

Oh, yeah, that would have been hype. I still believe Plup vs Leffen was the most exciting set to happen at this year's EVO, it's a shame he was extinguished by Hbox. I hope to see more of his grand upsets in the future (if possible)

I guess the thing was people never knew Peach's potential, iirc there was no notable top Peach's dominating/doing REALLY well back then, so she was like Sm4sh Yoshi, where they assumed a character was good despite not getting the results that really proved it.
