And was that the very first time they saw each other play? No, it wasn't. Did it matter in the game? Yes. Different life totals, different frame data. You'll never make it on that stage, but if you do, please be sure to throw a tantrum. They'll trespass you from the venue and ban you from any further competitions.

@@GiganFTW Rules have to be followed, or it sets a bad precedent of every rule being arbitrary. It sucks but it is the definition of fair. No exceptions for anyone. The "advantage" is symmetrical. Both players get more info on each other. Both players have probably played in the past so they had a lot of that info already anyways. The HP difference had a notable influence on the game, namely that Cage needed an extra touch to kill. There's a chance that 22 HP could've mattered, and while it didn't this time, this may not be true in the future. If this was a case where that 22 HP allowed Ashura to comeback, or if like, a certain combo connected/dropped because of a mis-patch, then in those situations, you would have to reset the set. The only way you could waive a rule like this is if you had refs. A ref would go through the replay, check if any of the patch changes affected any moment during the game, and if he decides it doesn't matter, then you could waive the rule. But Evo doesn't have refs, so the rules should be followed strictly.

It's not unfair because it's a symmetrical advantage and disadvantage. The unfair part is the mental hit. Someone who won a round and had it taken away is going to be in much worse state than someone who lost and had that loss erased. I personally would prefer for winner to go in with 1 round advantage. IDK how that would work in MK cuz I don't know h OK w resource carries between rounds. It's be hard to do for SF since super meter carries between rounds and the recon my matters. That being said, you can't just ignore being on the wrong patch. What if someone missed a combo because a combo that should work doesn't because you're on an old patch.

I'm making this comment without reading anything else below to avoid potential spoilers... Just picked this game back up the other day and it got me thinking (and as a result here watching this!) why the hell this game is not a bigger tournament game. I'm a 3rd Strike / Tekken player more than anything else so I'm not as familiar with the dynamics of the MK scene perhaps, but I do think MK1 is a super fun and beautiful game! It is the first in the series I've purchased since I was still living at my parents playing MK Deception. I'll admit I did think the reboot was pretty cool as well but my roommate at the time had it so I never bothered picking it up, and X and 11 just didn't appeal a ton to me for one reason or another. Anyways just wanted to say, MK players support your damn game better! I entered MK1 at NEC (or was it Winter Brawl...? Whichever one had the game. I'm getting the order of the events mixed up.) so I don't feel like a hypocrite saying that either. MK may not be my main game, but I've always had a soft spot for the series and would love to see MK1 share some of the spotlight SF6 and T8 have had more recently. EDIT: OMG, no patch installed...what a blow up!

To answer your question about why MK1 isn't a bigger tournament game, I think there are multiple factors to that. 1- MK is banned in multiple Asian countries for its violence, so MK doesn't have the same global popularity over there as with other franchises (Street Fighter, Tekken, etc.). So you won't see a lot of Japanese or Korean players for MK1. 2- in 2021 NRS just completely halted all support for MK11 with no new info about any upcoming game to replace it. So for 2 whole years NRS players were playing a game with no new content or pro tour, which made the community feeling very burnt by NRS. 3- NRS typically has 2 year support cycle, so the community is only getting new characters, balance patches, new stages for 2 years before the next game is announced. Compared to Street Fighter, Tekken, or even Guilty Gear which get up to 4 - 7 years of developer support. This means there is more incentive to commit to their games because of their long life span. Whereas if NRS players don't like the current game they can just wait for 2 more years for the next one. It also makes NRS fighting games feel very disposable. 4- Despite the series being around since the early 90's its current competitive scene is very young. Very little veteran players from the early days of Mk still compete today. When people think of the current NRS scene they think of the community that popped up during MK9's days. That's when serious MK competitions where seeing attention from the wider FGC. That's why since Mk was at Evo it doesn't have the same numbers compared to Street Fighter or Tekken. 5- MK1 wasn't really received well as the games life span went on. Players didn't like the Kameo system, they didn't like the online experience, and there were multiple bugs on the games release that NRS didn't fix until later. People felt that MK1 wasn't up to the standard that other fighting games like SF6 set. There was (and still is) a lot of claims that MK1 felt rushed out the door and incomplete. All this contributed to all the negativity and lack of support we see for MK1. The NRS scene just doesn't have the same enthusiasm for their series as they used to during the Mk9/X days. That's why out of the 4 new games in Evo's main line-up (TK8, Granblue rising, UNI2, and MK1) MK1 has the least amount of entrants despite being more culturally popular and the best selling game out of the 4.
