Please note that this is not a historically accurate reconstruction of actual Ancient Roman music, but rather modern music using Roman instruments and its modal framework. The Evocati were soldiers in the Roman army who had received their honorable discharge after completing their service, but enlisted once again at the request of an important general or politician. The Evocati enjoyed a a more prestigious status than most soldiers in the army as older, battle-hardened veterans who had returned to war, and were often equated in status with the equites class; many of them becoming centurions. The music uses the principal instrumental palette of Ancient Roman music: a lyre, an aulos and a pan flute. The percussions are more thematic and creative: I overlaid dozens of sounds of shields and spears being smashed together to exude a militaristic sound. The lyrics are pieced together from different sources: modern military mottoes and Ancient Roman texts. I used the reconstructed Classical Pronunciation accurate to the time span of Classical Latin (75 BC to AD 3rd century), and took into account both the stress accent of Latin as well as its phonemic vowel length, basing myself on Ancient Greek practice: therefore, as with Ancient Greek historical practice, the stressed accent of a word has the musical accent on it, and long vowels are demarcated from shorter ones either by being sung longer, or having melismas (more than one note) on them. @@yuukiranze Most evidence dipects that he was in charge of the province of dacia during the crisis of the third century. If he declared himself emperor during that time period it would have been short reign as obscure as he is, it would not make a good choice. I think emperors like gallieanus and valerian who fought the goths and the sassanids (especially valerian) or Aurelian and Diocletian would be better choices.

The Germanic peoples were skillful in their crafts and were living in small hamlets made of clay and wood, living from agriculture primarily, but they were also trading. Their societies were perfectly adapted to their life realities. Do you seriously think it is adequate to take the things Romans called their enemies as a fact? There are no barbarians, just different peoples with different life realities and different solutions for these life realities. Hunter gatherers are not primitive in their way of life, they simply utilise a different solution to the task of making a living, and very successfully so. Using the term "barbarian" indicates either ignorance or arrogance.

I don't think I have heard anyone use the Aulos as well as you have in these Roman-Byzantine tracks you made. There's just something that hits different when the double pipes are played in such war-like melodies and the lower tones. I just simply love how they make the cultural aspect of these Greco-Roman periods and the music they (theoretically) used. Even if they're just modern music, you really knock it out of the park in usage of these ancient instruments. I'm not gonna lie, I've been absolutely obsessed with THIS song in particular since it was released. Something about it's lyrics. The patriotism, the profession of love for country and home, together with the promise to defend that. Its almost as if I needed to hear this. The length of enlistment in the Roman military was a lot longer than that in the modern militaries. The length of Roman service was closer to the length of military service that would qualify for retirement in the US and other western militaries. The modern counterpart to the Evocati would be those who were called back into active duty from the retired reserve. This would be many of us if World War III started, a major conflict occurred that required expanding the size of the military, the US gets invaded, etc. So, when someone wonders if 38-40 is too young to retire someone from the military, with pension and benefits, remember, that person is still in the military and is liable to become the modern version of the Evocatus. At this point, "military service" is "indefinite."
