Evolution of Ash

Going through all the Pokemon seasons, I noticed that Ash's voice changes quite a bit. Not only changes in voice actors, but how the actors end up portraying Ash. I thought I'd throw up a comparison to show the differences between the English voices.
Doing this video made me realize how much Sarah has improved, and that I like her XY Ash better than Veronica's Advanced Ash. Who knew! It also made me realize that the TV version of the mastermind special is darn near impossible to find.

Honestly Sarah deserves so much credit. I can't imagine having to take over an already well established role with a defined voice, especially since she was only 18/19 at the time she became Ash's new voice.

That's like what happened with Sonic voice actors. Ryan Drummond was the OG and then he was replaced with Jason Griffith. Jason tried to imitate Ryan but he slowly made his own Sonic variant and it was one of the best Sonic voices to date.

Veronica Taylor is just too iconic. I love how energetic and enthusiastic she is and the relationship between Ash and Pikachu. Kayzie Rogers isn't the right sound for Ash, sounds like Tuff from "Kirby Right Back at Ya!" Sarah Natochenny isn't as bad as people make her out to be. It figures her first time voicing Ash she'd be a little Rocky. The early Sinnoh episodes Ash's voice is incredibly raspy and smoky. But by mid Unova she finally found Ash's voice. She isn't Veronica but I'm okay with that.

Sarah's Ash voice has grown on me and been honed into an icon of its own. That being said I have a very vivid memory of hearing it for the first time as a kid and thinking "SOMETHING IS WRONG"

Ash's voice in the original episodes was like a high pitched kid trying to deepen his voice. then roughly halfway through Kanto Veronica started to get better and then it was really good in Johto but advanced perfectly got all elements of ash's iconic voice together: that higher pitched tone, making ash's raspy and slightly croaky voice sound a lot more natural. when Sarah took over in hoenn and that is Ash's worst voice. way to deep and it just sounds like Ash had a soar throat 24/7. tbh it was really only mid unova Sarah really started getting the hang of it. and in XY Sarah finally stopped trying to be Veronica and put her own spin on the voice. Sarah was never able to match what Veronica did with Ash's raspy and child-like voice, so she (to an extent) got rid of that raspy kiddish element and made ash's voice a lot more clearer and smoother and if anything more masculine. I can't say whether I enjoy one more than the other. Veronica's voice summed up Ash perfectly as a young sparky child, and Sarah's voice summed up ash as an older and more developed teen (even though he's still 10😂)

I have to admit, Veronic Taylor's Ash will always be iconic and amazing, she really did so much for his character. I always liked how much Veronica Taylor made progress in creating Ash's voice over the original and Hoenn series. It changed a lot and only got better and btetter. As for Sarah Natochenny, she was pretty bad at first because she was only trying to copy Veronica's voice. Within the years she found a good voice for Ash and, as much as I love Veronica Taylor's work, when I think of Ash, Sarah's voice is what echoes in my head. They both did a good job! Now, it would be nice if you could do the same with Team Rocket! (:

Veronica Taylor definitely figured out her niche as Ash. Very early on the voice is deep, but by mid Kanto it was a little high pitched, by Johto it started to improve and by Hoenn her performance was at its peak. Sarah at first sounds like an attempt to imitate Veronica's mid Johto to Hoenn voice. For whatever reason Ash gets raspy and husky in the beginning of Sinnoh, but by "A Grass Menagerie" she was able to invent her own take on Ash and by Unova she had perfected it.

Kayzie Rogers, Amy Birnbaum, and Tara Jayne always seemed to voice young boys in the filler episodes of the original series. Since they sound similar, especially the latter two, it can be confusing, but I can identify if I used the more well-known characters' voices, since they serve as a base.

Veronica Taylor will always be a classic, but Sarah Natochenny will always be my favorite. Her entrance into the more modern version of Pokèmon was an outstanding one, and her overall performance was amazing. The voice only changed for real two times actually. The second voice actor we hear only did the Mastermind Mirage of Pokemon episode because she just wasn't good enough. And when the Black & White series started airing in Japan, the animators decided to change the animation style a bit. It may seem really weird when we watch it a first because the eyes are so big and stuff, but we get used to it real fast and I think I kinda like this version better.

Cristian Johnston actually the voices usually get better as the voice actor gets more confortable with the role especially with beginner voice actors you can always tell when you’re hearing a beginner voice actor because the voice of the character sounds a little broken

When they got rid of Veronica they ruined ash Edit: It's been years, my opinion has changed. The changing of voice actors is irrelevant to my opinion on the pokemon anime. I think the new voice actor is doing a fine job, I just feel the writing in the series has just declined since the first couple seasons. That's the reason I feel we associate the change in voice actors as being bad instead of the decline in writing. That being said, it's still just the pokemon anime, there are better shows out there. Still though, getting rid of Veronica did not ruin Ash at all.

@ArmanAditya Basu While my opinions have changed over the years and that I do agree that the DP series is generally one of the better seasons, I still hold the opinion that the original cast for Kanto and Johto were the best in the series. I did enjoy the cast in other seasons, but I feel that the writing in the series peaked in the first few seasons. That may be irrelevant to the cast as they could've had better writing in the other seasons regardless of the cast. That being said, it still is the Pokemon anime, it's not like they're gunning to be the best in the medium.

I like both Veronica and Sarah. I'm glad people are showing Sarah some more appreciation even if they prefer Veronica. For me Veronica does great for the early Savage Ash we see from Indigo league to hoenn. But Sarah does great as the humble and more mature Ash from later on. its pretty jarring the difference in ash's personality. but i understand why they rebooted him a couple times.

I forgot how deep Ash's voice was in sinnoh and unova, but it was worse in sinnoh more than unova tbh in my opinion...

In the first 20 or so Kanto episodes, Veronica was eh but around late Kanto to early Orange Islands. She perfected it! Kayzie has a disgusting voice for ash, Sarah was bad at first, but around mid sinnoh, she got the hang of it-ish. And finally around late Unova, it was her own voice, barely resembling Veronica's. So overall in the battle scenes (besides Pikachu using TBolt) Sarah wins it, but in the chill/comedic scenes, Veronica ez dubs it.

4Kids' licensing agreement with Pokémon USA and Nintendo expired in December of 2005. Pokémon USA decided to take over the merchandising and licensing for the franchise. So they decided to go ahead and replace the cast because they were concerned over money. Veronica and her colleagues weren't notified and were betrayed by TAJ Productions who agreed to allow Kayzie Rogers and James Carter Cathcart to jump ship and work on the new dub. And well the rest is history...
