Quite suprising how litreally less than half of all major DBZ games don't have a legitimate beam struggle mechanic. I still think, 17 years later - Budokai 3 still looks the best (beam struggles). Was so satisfying to win. But BT3 had the best mechanic - where you could put more energy into it. I always thought it would be cool if you could transform during a beam struggle. Like say you were ssj but losing you could go ssj2

BT3 beam struggles were amazing. no other game has been able to recreate and make me relive my childhood memories in such a way. i still so vividly remember the look on my brothers face when he saw me input a kamehameha, ready to spin the everloving damn out of his analog stick and the moment they HIT, we started pushing eachother’s arms around, still spinning the stick, so one of us would slip up and get blasted away. truly a dbz game unlike any other.

Budokai Tenkiachi 3 was probably the most enjoyable DBZ fighting game I ever played, the character list and fighting mechanics were really good for that generation. Even though some DBZ games since then have adopted similar mechanics, they just never hit the same. To be real, nothing apart from the aesthetics have changed when it came to beam battles and that is really the biggest disappointment.

Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 will always be number one. The characters even had little quips that came out like Vegeta’s “No you dooooooonnnn’t” once the beams hit each other. Plus the animation was great to see and you felt very satisfied when you won a beam struggle. Thanks for all the nostalgia too. The background music from Budokai 1, Budokai Tenkaichi 1 and 2 (Lost Courage was a huge favorite) really made me smile to hear those tunes again. Thanks for the video. Keep it up.
@wilturner6759
@wilturner6759 3 жыл бұрын
I think Budokai 3 had the best beam struggle mechanic, it showed both players simultaneously firing, the screen jumps a bit to emphasize the heavy impact of the next scene/struggle, and a nice little detail from a gameplay standpoint - if someone enters their beam command - as their opponent, you were given maybe a second to a second and a half to enter in your command to cover their beam - almost kind of simulating a last minute response to their attack... recreates the drama akin to when Goku covers Nappa's mouth beam last second when they fought... crazy to think that game was out in '04

I know this is a bit off topic, but I wish Dragon Ball Z Kakarot had a local fight option, it has such an aggressive and fluid fighting style and I personally enjoyed it a lot, not to mention it brought back a lot of what fans (like me) enjoy, beam struggles, good animation, character interactions during fights, it's all in there. Energy waves (Like Vegeta's Final Flash and Gohan's Super Masenko) and Energy Balls (Goku's Spirit Bomb and Frieza's Death Ball) do not clash. If you mean the others, then yeah. I looked it up and found that although Infinite World is built off of the engine of Budokai 3, beam struggles were removed. Must've confused 3 and IW for each other. I also figured the same thing for Shin Budokai 1 and 2. It was similar to Burst Limit, so I figured that must've carried over. They should make you rapidly press a button and it will slowly eat up your meter. Depending on how late you counter beam, depends on how much meter it'll take to reach your opponent, that is if they don't decide to use their meter as well. If you both run out of meter, the person closest to the beam eats it.

I have not played all of these games but after watching all of them, I would give the top spot to Budokai 3 (2004). The way the beam struggles were triggered are very spontaneous, giving you very little time to think and react, which in my opinion, is probably an accurate representation of how a "real life" beam struggle would be like. This also means that the whole match wouldn't be bombarded with beam struggles as the timing to activate it is pretty strict. Visually, it was very easy to see who was winning the struggle (the 3rd party side perspective). And the mechanic of winning the beam struggle was determined by rotating the analog sticks faster than the opponent, which if you think about it, equates to whoever put in more "effort" in the struggle to push through. It seems like the most clear and fair way to resolve something like this. I quite like how the "DBZ: Ultimate Tenkaichi" beam struggle looks, it did a really good job of combining cinematics with practicality and mechanics. I only find it too accessible to activate the beam struggle given that it seems like you could have some time to consider your defensive options rather than reacting on the fly.
