Yeah, i didn't like it, when the party members were reduce to just 3 people and the enemy sprites were no longer bigger than your party members and beautiful drawn in 2D, the original FF series ended right here. Luckily FFVII was a popular and good game released on a new console back then that was about new tech(3D), so, it was acceptable, but crude polygon graphics have aged like milk, unlinke beautiful crafted 2D sprites.

It blew our minds in theory. The first time I played VII, I was definitely carried away on the euphoria of the technological evolution. Then I played it a couple more times, and realized it could never mean the same to me as FF VI. FF VI, by the way, has amazingly intricate graphics for the time. I cannot think of another SNES game with backgrounds so lovingly detailed and painstakingly put together.

You can really see here that the hugest jumps were in FF7 and FF12. In 7, suddenly you actually SEE your characters attacking, your choices are played out and immersive. In 12, no more "entering" battles, you're just existing in the world and fighting or running in real time. Such iconic games, so well done.

当時小学生で、DS版3が初FFで音楽とジョブチェンジの奥深さにハマって、 7や10のストーリーでゲームってコンテンツ自体の凄さに驚愕して、 他ナンバリングも11以外全部やって、 ATBの正統進化とも言える13のバトルも凄い楽しくて、 勿論世代的にアクションゲームも大好きなので新作の15や16も楽しめた。 リアルタイム世代を羨ましいと思うけど、 生まれた環境的に「ATBだ、アクションだ」などととやかく言わず、 シリーズ通して楽しめる世代に生まれて良かったと思う。

I loved the skill system of FF IX. It felt so rewarding to learn new skills every few fights and it actually made the equipment valuable. In other games you can just sell all your old equipment once you get new stuff. If you haven't jet, you might want to check out Lost Odyssey. It has a similar system to FF IX. I found it really cool, that you have 2 different types of characters in your party and each type learns skills differently. It's a shame, that the game didn't get the attention it deserved, just because it was released on XBox 360, while most JRPG players got themselves a PS3 back then.

@@Widderic unfortunately it never got ported to any other systems. I bought myself a used XBox 360 the a few years back, just to play this game. It is compatible with the XBox One and XBox Series X/S, but if you don't have any of those there is no way to play this game. I don't know how the game pass stuff works, so maybe if it finds it's way into the game pass someday, it will be available for PC too. But I actually doubt that's how it works.

Lukas If you have a psp or better yet, a psvita, you can easily emulate ff3 on it. I have ff1 -10/2on a psvita. Even tactics and crisis core. World of final fantasy. Dissidia Duodecim. All of that. Pretty damn crazy you can have basically 80% of the lineup on one device. Psp can’t run ff10 though but it goes up to ff9 on psp.

12大好きです！BGMもフィールドも冒険してる感、ファンタジー感があってワクワクしました！ガンヒットシステムは戦闘が苦手な自分にとってめちゃくちゃありがたいシステムでした。 ストーリーは確かに賛否両論だけど、続編のレヴァナント・ウィングでヴァンはしっかり主人公してて、そのあとA2で有名な空賊として名を馳せてて感動しました！ 個人的には12で『パンネロのテーマ』って題名だったBGMがA2で『東から来た空賊』って題名になってるのが最高にエモいのです！

I actualy really like the battle system for XIII & -2 with the whole paradigm shift and stagger mechanic, it makes the battle feel more strategic and fun especialy againt tougher enemies ( *we can get rid of the fun when attempting to fight the same boss for days* ). Really love how stagger mechanic was implemented in 7R since it makes it possible to down tougher enemies when you can't overwhelm them But most of all, we could agree that the battle theme and overall ost for XIII series is really² good

Final Fantasy X-2 had the best ATB. A lot of tactics were involved like timing your attacks to chain with a party member's slower charged attack, status effects were super important to exploit enemy patterns, you could interrupt or be interrupted and items were balanced to be fast but generally weak vs healing magic being powerful but slow. Also, it was the first time Squaresoft/Square-Enix actually took something and innovated instead of outright reinventing the wheel like they do with every game.

Haha. I have played original FFVII 20-25 times in my lifetime. I usually play it once per year and I have actually used lots of money to that single game, because I have bought it to original ps1, to phone and from steam too.

FFX nailed the turn based battle system best of all. CTB window was best invention ever. Switching party members on the fly made for great tactical decisions and easy leveling. Sphere grid was addicting.

Absolutely agree. I also like that statuses and buffs or debuffs play a much greater role, than in previous entries. It made for the most strategic battle system in FF and some of the bosses where really tough nuts to crack on my first playthrough. I just wish you didn't have to switch every character into battle, for them to gain exp. This unfortunately adds tedium to the game and often has you attack smaller enemies in a suboptimal way, just because you need experience for the characters. It often defeats the purpose of the special characters for special situations thought in the random battles.

You're not wrong. The battle system is definitely good. A lot of the other things about the game are very, very bad though. It's a mixed bag.

@@graalcloud Well it has some of the worst minigames ever and a crazy amount of grinding. Sometimes when I think about replaying the game, I get flashbacks of the Chocobo minigame and doing monster farm, and I lose interest. But in my opinion it still is an overall great game. Once enough time has passed, to forget how bad the minigames and grind were, I usually give it a replay. The story, the music and the way the story is told, make an exceptional experience. I can't even begin to describe how much just the opening of the game moves me, after having played through it and knowing what point in the story this is and how it will continue.

@@graalcloud You say a lot, but I think Final Fantasy X is close to master class in story telling. So many videos analyze how FFX does pacing in it's story done RIGHT. The things it got right: Pacing, music, conveyance, battle system, music, even voice acting 'most' of the time is just fine and even excellent at points. Oh and also the music!!

My favourite battle system is FFXIIIs. It was fun and different from previous games, + the turn based combat was fun after FFXII. The soundtrack of FFXIII is also just really really good, Masashi Hamauzu did an amazing job with the OST of the game
