Originality and pure spirit of this series ended with Metal Slug 3 in 2000. After SNK went bankrupt, there's been only downfall of this cult classic sadly. The only exceptions in modern series after MS3 are MS5 and MS7.

magic and aliens were ok, it lead to zombies, martians, ancient dungeons, space fights, but when they introduced super powers and future portals, things started going downhill, metal slug awakening is a mix of all those things, it doesnt even feel like heavy machine guns could hurt extra-dimensional entities, i mean i apreciate it still being militaristic but why are you enlisting baseball players and food entusiasts?

they showcased the toned down version of metal slug 1, the metal slug 1 in the video is not the original version, a lot of frames were cut from everything for it to run on some emulator. The Arcade version is what you should be playing and enjoy

It's more like degradation. 1,2,X,3 has a nice pixel art. 4 and 5 created by chinese - have kinda bad quality background, but use old assets, and the music is much worse than 1-3, except some track (ms5 have a nice music in level 3, break trough). All next metal slug, like 6,7,XX is mostly cheap trash, except some bosses (like sprout in XX is good, but...)
