it used to be good, its bad now. multiplayer isn't what it used to be. Games bloated with random things (like elytra) and servers contain a network of other mini servers (survival, factions, bedwars, etc). Back in the day you joined a server and the population of said server was exactly as shown. Factions with 300/400 people and its that. not a subset of servers equaling 300.
