Like the beat of the music, it slaps harder than when you type code in all existing programming languages.

Then there are the changes in language specification. ALGOL 58, 60, 68 FORTRAN I to IV, 66, 77, 90, 95 … Ada 83, 95, 2005, 2012, 2022 COBOL has a new standard issued in 2023. Object oriented programming led to a lot of the later standards for the older languages. It does make you wonder why there has been a plethora of new languages over the past 10 years.

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that a big part of Python's success is because it made a great wrapper around Fortran.
@nabra975 күн бұрын
I know that it's ultimately interpreted in C++ (or C?), and that's why some people say that it's not actually a language. Haven't heard of it being related to Fortran before
@siriusleto37585 күн бұрын
Not that it was written in Fortran but it uses Fortran libraries natively very well.

I suppose that someone should mention APL. In many ways, it's outside the line of evolution, so it's not surprising that it wasn't listed. It led to J, but as far as I know, it never went any farther than that. Using APL, you could usually get an answer without having to write a program first. (Do you want an answer, or do you want to write a computer program to get the answer?) It was a lot like using a scientific calculator today, except that you could name your variables (including arrays) anything you wanted. You had to get used to using Greek letters and other symbols as functions, i.e., no keywords. Ken Iverson wrote a book titled _A Programming Language_ in 1962(?) that started it all. Unlike most languages from that time, it was designed first, then they had to write the computer code to accommodate it. Other early languages were designed based on what the computer hardware could do. I've seen a handful of videos on KZbin that demonstrated APL. They might give an idea of what you missed out on. I'm too lazy to link to them. In my opinion, spreadsheets replaced much of the functionality of APL, so there's not much reason to use it now.

0:15 The BASIC in the example is too new, most likely it's a quickbasic from the early 90s. The first versions of Basic were very simple, with line numbers, with simple data types such as float and strings, there was no function, all control by line numbers. In fact, the first version of Basic is just a simplified Fortran interpreter. There were also as many versions of BASIC as there were different 8-bit computers, and they were usually not compatible with each other. The popularity of Basic was due to the fact that it had a very simple interpreter, which weighed from 4 kb, yes, the first version of basic for altair 8800 weighed only 4 kb. More complex versions of Basic weighed 8-16 kb, which is not very much for a machine with 64 KB of memory.

Lets see: - easy to learn - portable - works well as a glue programming language (write your code in other programming languages and call it from Python) - rich ecosystem of libraries And I say that as someone who writes code mostly in C.
@sontheharry15 күн бұрын
Agreed. I dont trust a coding language that doesn't use semi-colons
@SunHail815 күн бұрын
@Hardcore_Remixer glue PL is the key here :) pure py is a damn slow o/a glitchy ;D + almost any script lang can be glue PL. yet another major setback is lack of semicolons & brackets for funcs - it's been really poor solution: if one uses simple text editor.. just no censored words :))
