The highlight of the gay Teletubby controversy for me is that BBC had to make an official statement I’m which they said that Tinky WInky is not gay but in fact “[he] is simply a sweet, technological baby with a magic bag.” Which is such a wonderful sentence. As an aside my new favorite coy way to ask if someone is gay is to say “is he...you know... a sweet techno baby with a magic bag?”

Funny enough, he *DID* die of heart failure. But that was in 2007, a full year before even California legalized gay marriage. On another funny note about the Falwell family, his son (named after him, hence the Sr. in the dad’s name), took over for his dad in the family religious and university business. That was until relatively recently when it became public that the son was a swinger who liked to watch his wife play with others’ Tinky Winkies. He’s since resigned. 😂

I'm not usually the type of person that gets angry about reboots of my childhood shows, but what the Sun-Baby is that new Teletubbies show?😅 Like why do they have children now? Aren't they supposed to be babies? Why are babies having babies? Is there a Teen Pregnancy Epidemic in Tubbyland? And why do the Tibsytubbies(?) look like someone's first blender project? Get some textures on these things they look creepier than the 2m tall articulated suits!
@myriadmediamusings2 жыл бұрын
Gotta admit I was a little blindsided upon seeing the topic of this one. Never occurred to me how the Teletubbies costumes would actually undergo evolution. And also looking back on how relentless the teases and mockery of the show was, I do wonder just how much of it was legitimate or just riffing. Honestly the last time I saw Teletubbies in any capacity was in Doctor Who during a lousy season-ending story arc when the Master was watching the show and marvelling at creatures with TVs in their stomachs.
@andrewshelly2112 жыл бұрын
Teletubbies was my childhood. Regarding the controversies, the Lion and Bear was a huge one I remember. Usually those ‘magical events’ would be shown in multiple episodes, and that included the Lion and Bear. So episode 11 was only the first episode it was shown in. It actually showed up in multiple episodes (granted it was the exact scene each time). I’ve always wanted to know how the idea for it came to be, and how the creators initially reacted to it’s controversy. And even despite the controversy, I remember the Lion and Bear being on loads of merchandise (jigsaws, books, magazines etc.). I’ve always found the whole Tinky Winky handbag controversy hilarious as well. One correction with the costumes is that the articulation was actually done by the performers. In the hands, there were controls that were like bike brakes. One hand controlled the mouth and the other hand controlled the eyes. Great video Dan 👍🏻
@TeletubbyFan2 жыл бұрын
The bizarre thing was that it wasn't banned in the UK, and by the time the merch was made the ban was already in place. The US banned the sketch after the first airing and they redid some episodes to remove the Lion and Bear. The ban was slow in the UK which is why they kept putting it in episodes. The first episode to have the Edited Sketch wasn't until late 2000, and that version only appeared in two episodes.
@andrewshelly2112 жыл бұрын
@@TeletubbyFan I’m from the UK, it was banned once CBeebies started in 2002. I remember 2 episodes with the scary version, Irish Dancing and Colours Brown. Surprisingly I never saw the edited version as a child. I sometimes wonder had I seen that version, would I have liked it, or just hated it as much as I hated the scary version.
@TeletubbyFan2 жыл бұрын
Yea the original sketch was used in 14 episodes, I think. Again, only two that used the edited version and only near the very end of the show's run. That would explain why you never saw the edited version.

Dave Thompson told us that they did break on occasion and made the eyes shoot straight up. 4:42 Again, not sure. That image is part of a sketch used in one episode. Unless I'm missing something, don't think this is right. They did, however, add the pattern on the feet to make sure they didn't slip off the hills. 10:43 Yea this was terrifying. @katerinapeklenk20162 жыл бұрын
The original Teletubbies series was literally the happiest, most comforting thing I ever saw due to how endearing the characters are. Tinky Winky stood out to me the most. Now, I'm not gay myself and only heard about the controversy behind this character many years after I saw all the DVDs and VHS tapes we could rent or buy. But even if he wasn't potentially gay, Tinky Winky would still have possessed the protective vibe that I must have felt when I saw him on TV so many years ago. Even though I would have wanted to see the original set for the show myself, I can understand why the creators wouldn't want too much attention to be drawn to the hole. But I will never completely forget the bond that the main characters had for one another; that really shaped my perspective on their crazy shenanigans. Seeing them interact with each other in their silly gibberish, whether it be while understanding how things appearing from "far away" work or giving each other big hugs, really gave me the impression that they were harmless beings in spite of their immense height and weight. Anyway, sorry for the rant. This was a great vid on the show, and hearing the theme again was a silly yet kind of nostalgic experience. I definitely don't need to see the reboot after all the precious childhood days spent watching the Teletubbies dance, light up their screens, eat toast and custard, and have a blast proclaiming yet again that they "love each other very much".

It depends on what sequence you’d be watching. Each episode in original 1997-1999 series, was literally the same footage recycled over and over again. The only things that were filmed new, were the inserts of the children being transmitted by each Tubby. So some of the scenes had been filmed on glorious summer days, where the set was surrounded by blue sky and plenty of sunshine. Other scenes, and the skies are grey and it could be seen how windy it was. I think ultimately, the set designers had conceived Teletubbyland as a bright, sunny place. After all there’s literally a baby in the sun watching them!! So, when the second run was commissioned (where, bizarrely, the costume fastener seam had been moved from the back to the front) the decision was made to film everything on a chromakey soundstage.

The absolute chaotic acceptance from Disney Dan is not what I was expecting but good lord am I even more happier to be a fan!! If Tinky Winky helped mold me into the queer person I am today then I'm okay with that!!!

It's great to see you evolute 4 characters from my home turf in the UK and you're so not wrong about the lion and bear segment. Although I wasn't too intimidated by the bear but the lion was pure nightmare fuel especially the close ups. I believe the segment was banned in the US. Good work Dan.

You know one thing the Teletubbies team could have done as another change to the costumes, Disney Dan? I think for Teletubbies Everywhere and later for the 2015 reboot, they could have given the characters eyebrows. I mean, here's what I see: Tinky-Winky and Po would have black eyebrows because of their light face tone, Laa-Laa would be given brown eyebrows, and as for Dipsy, since he has a dark face, I believe white eyebrows would be good for him. Can you imagine the Teletubbies with eyebrows? If not, I understand. I just wanted to tell you what I think Teletubbies with eyebrows would look like and how I think it would make an interesting change to the costumes. So what do you say, Disney Dan?

As a kid, I used to think, they would be way smaller and played by kids🤣 and the land would be nearly endless.

To be honest I never knew that Teletubbies existed outside of the UK! I was 7 when the first series aired, so ‘too old’ for the target audience but I loved it! I remember you could get tubby toast and tubby custard at the supermarket! I have since seen the characters at Alton Towers and Butlins holiday camp (with my own children) and their shows are always adorable 🥰 very fun and informative video!

I clicked immediately when I saw you were covering a huge part of my childhood, The Teletubbies! Po was my freaking spirit animal! Once again your laughter has brought laughter into my life and I appreciate you even more for it. Would you consider doing a White Rabbit Costume evolution? I've always thought it was interesting how the parks went from having The White Rabbit as a mere plastic bunny mask to the White Rabbit we know today.

Maybe they were born in 1903 and just have an extended life span? The reboot costumes are fine but I really don't like the art style of the reboot. Mostly the sun, the noo noo and the windmill. And I assume the Teletubbies are siblings so maybe storks brought the Tiddlytubbies?
