Actually, that's pretty much it's history. After releasing the first game, the Nintendo devs had an unofficial internal one-up contest to see who could make the most brutal level to troll each other. Much of this effort was packaged into SMB2, and when the US Nintendo President got the demo copy, he played in with his buddy, called up Nintendo Japan, and said, "No." Thusly, Doki Doki Panic was reskinned as a Mario game and released in the US instead of SMB2, which was released much later as, "The Lost Levels." So yeah, people trolling each other in custom Mario levels has been a tradition from the release of the very first game.

The thing is: that pipe. There isn't any level on Mario sunshine that ends with a pipe, since you can exit levels on pause. Yeah he got the shine, but let's say he missed a coin, he could kill himself to restart the challenge, or enter the mysterious pipe at the end, which could be a restart level without costing life. Yeah this happened with me, I missed a red coin and entered the pipe, and had to do all the 15 minute quest to get to that island again.

That's part of what makes the Mario series so fun. I think it's amazing Nintendo's been making Mario games for two generations (maybe you can say three now). My mom and dad grew up with Nintendo games and my uncle born in 1985 still has his NES (I was born in 2000 so many of the best ever games were from before my time).
