This is actually hilarious 😆 I was reminded of your Ganondorf video about the octatonic scale. I didn't get into it this video but parallel fourths and octatonic scale (and at times whole tone scale like in the Blight Ganon theme before it loops) are extremely common in Zelda battle and boss music. And I guess bII chords as well, or Phrygian mode. Hope you're well man!

Shoutout to Ganon's theme being used in phase 2 of Colgera. It's in the bass voice and it's subtle but it's there. References like this are all over the place and I know there are more. THAT is incredible storytelling in the music alone.

Wind Waker's version definitely sounds more melancholy than previous versions, and parts of it have a sort of tired tone, which really makes this Ganondorf stand out from the others!

I've heard the woodblock/timpani hits right before priest of the dark order and my theory on it is that it represents the tension before a reincarnation or ultimate form of Ganon / Ganondorf. There's always been a pause of sorts between forms to emphasize the dread of what's coming but the addition of a quiet knocking sound actually brings the suspense up.

@MusicProfile-k2w

Okay, so I just have to point this out, since I'm an avid Spirit Tracks enjoyer. At 7:17, from the inside of Ganon's castle, you mentioned that it has that sort of vocal sound paired with the piano. In the "Malladus Inside Cole's Body" piece of the Spirit Tracks OST, it has the exact same thing. In the comments of the video of the song, someone described it as a sort of warbling like he [Malladus] can't hold on in Cole's body for much longer. Especially with the decrescendo at the end. And in this Ganon's castle part, the way it sounds kinda makes you feel a sense of dread, so I love how the not-quite-vocals are both used to make that. And I just have to say, this whole video was fantastic and I absolutely love Ganon's themes in all of the games, thanks for making a video on it! I loved the inclusion of all of the little musical elements and pieces of Ganon's castle and Phantom Ganon, etc. And I've always loved the Twilight Princess Ganon themes, no matter which phase it was, so I was really happy to see a good analysis of that! And, of course, a piece of one of the Wind Waker Ganon themes used later in the Dark Beast Ganon theme was something I've never even thought of! Sorry this comment is so long, but this video was absolutely amazing and I'm so glad I stumbled across it!

Wind Waker’s Ganondorf theme still gives me chills, the added inversion gives so much depth to his character and immediately tells us his whole story. The original theme ascending slowly but steadily, telling us of the threat he used to be, creeping up on the kingdom of Hyrule. And the descending inversion echoing in the background signifying his downfall along with the old Hyrule, fading slowly into oblivion while desperately clinging to the past. It‘s fitting that the final fight is where this descending theme finally breaks through, as his last hope of reviving Hyrule is snatched away in front his eyes and he has nothing left but to struggle in vain, knowing his fate is sealed for good.

@@thepotatoportal69 Not all woodwinds have reeds, because flutes (and similar instruments like panpipes) are also classified under woodwinds. You're right that brass fits under "wind instruments" (or Aerophones) alongside woodwind, and that the Didj is classified as a natural trumpet. All wind instruments make sound by vibrating a column of air, but the defining feature of a brass instrument is that the vibration comes from the player's lips (as it does with both a didgeridoo and a trumpet), whereas the construction of a woodwind instrument is what causes the air to vibrate, by splitting the air on a sharp edge such as a reed or the mouthpiece of a flute.

Wow. Regarding that secret reference, I actually thought it was a reference to something else at first. Spoilers for the end of this video but also a TotK cutscene When I was first heard that click-clacking effect in the Imprisoning War memory, I assumed it was a direct reference to the general battle theme in Tears of the Kingdom. An identical clacking sound (I wish I knew what instrument it was) plays at the beginning of the overworld and cave variations of the battle themes. Which I think is fitting, considering the secret reference you picked up on and how many of these monsters were directly created and commanded by Ganondorf in this game.

I was hoping to see if any of the Demise/Imprisoned themes have any references. I suppose you may have made a video covering these (if I'm not just reaching too hard), but oh well. Looking on my own I've found the following: At the end of the "Battlefield of Demise Theme" (plays when speaking to Demise just before the final fight starts) Ganon's theme is referenced. I believe it is also referenced about 15 seconds into Demise's 2nd phase theme, in a phrase played by the strings. They do play a very similar rhythm at the very least, throughout most of the 2nd phase theme. They almost seem to play the phrase upside down as well. This could be a reach tho. In Demise's first phase theme, the chords seem to be similar? There's four rising chords that give me ganon vibes at least. And around 34 seconds in, the melody may reference Ganon's theme. A little reference about 32 seconds into the Imprisoned theme. Tried to see if I could find anything in Minish Cap and the DS games but I couldn't, they don't involve Ganon pretty much at all though so it makes sense.
@daryback7103

The most clear feeling i get from Ganon's theme is that he is the dissonance. I mean, all seems perfectly normal. Is not so much different from a normal melody, you may say that even is not "malefic" per se, until suddenly he hits the most unusual note in the most unexpected moment, driving you into musical chaos as you fail to follow the subsequent second. And the use of some chords in specific moments drives you deeper.

I believe ganon's theme was called something different when I made it to debut and a link to the past because it was a social with agonym and we didn't even know that ganon was involved until near the end. So people never played A Link to the past but played the later games are already going to be spoiled as soon as they hear gannon's theme or whatever it was called back in that particular game

The only thing I would add is Demise’s theme. Listening to is it continues the legacy of the Sone but there are no half steps. I suppose that could also imply that there was no deception or half measures with that character.

Just stopped by because, since figuring out the crazy phrasing in Ganondorf's OoT, my head is constantly going "1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 e & a, 1 & a 2 & a 3 e & a" lol

Hey, could you do a video about the Sanctuary theme in Link to the Past? I have always found it fascinating how good it is and why it never came back.

I know you're Zelda music theory, but Metroid is my other favorite franchise, I'd love to hear what you think about the amazing and ambient music of the Metroid verse 🥰

This is timely, I'm very seriously considering filming and launching a second channel for non-Zelda breakdowns. Matroid has to make the cut lol.

I really do think that the limitations of early video games were actually a boon for Nintendo. It forced them to break their music down to its most simple to convey a lot of emotion with very few sounds. As technology advanced to have more capabilities for sound design, Nintendo was poised with an absolute arsenal of simple, remixable songs that were instantly recognisable. Many sound designers, even at big studios tend to go too big, loud, or busy, but Nintendo always seems to remember that the basics are sometimes the most effective use of limited resources. I've got my complaints about them of course, but they really do knock it out of the park with their music each time

My theory for Ganondorf's theme not being as dissonance as you would think is because in Ganondorf's mind, his goal is beautiful. Like in Wind Waker when he was going to bring back Hyrule just to rule over it. Edit: Also why Ganondorf's theme in Twilight sounded the same as Ocarina's is because they're the same Ganondorf, just different timelines.

That’s interesting. It probably wasn’t the original intent of Koji Kondo when he composed it for a link to the past, but it definitely works. I guess it’s kind of like Thanos. In a maniacal way it kind of makes sense. Like the end, justifies the means.

I don't know if it's inspiration or a coincidence, but the "Schattenhaft" ("Shadowy") section from the 1st movement of Mahler Symhony 9 has similar vibes. Slow quarter note ostinato in the harp and chromatically rising parallel fourths in the violins kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYqThHR6ecpnrs0 (go to 10:30. Matching section at 18:05 with more parallel 4ths but no harp ostinato)

ALBW has another version of the Great demon king's leitmotif the moment he is freed by (imo) his Lorulean counterpart and fuses with him into one being. Ganondorf's leitmotif is one of many reasons(one of the other being his fundamental characterization The curse of the demon tribe/race which is really just a descriptive curse for the state of demons and the three Buddhist poisons of greed hate and delusion/ignorance in Japanese and in Demise's(The avatar/person/one of demise in Japanese) speech describes successors who can willingly become a demon king(embodiment/manifestation/incarnation/personification of pure evil and the three poisons) because Saṃsāra is a an eternal cycle of both good and evil emotions and desires(existing before Demise's revival in SS's past era) and history will repeat itself Demise's remaining conciousness getting destroyed inside the Master sword and by a Triforce wish Ganondorf never caring about the Gerudo because he only cares about himself(and Twinrova to an extent) despite what some people claim about his wind speech in TWW (which is overblown as it was really just him talking about himself, his envy, his greedy and hunger for power, in Japanese he is far less poetic and doesn't mention the Gerudo's homes(and he never did anything for them or cared much about them in OOT) but the winds of prosperity that he is using as a justification for his actions doesn't line up with his actions as he crushed those winds the moment he conquered Hyrule so he is an unreliable hypocrite stuck living in the past and wanting to conquer and rule with overwhelming power again and wants to force the Great sea's inhabitants to be subjugated under his cruel and insane law) The appeal of Ganondorf's character(greedy, selfish, egotistical, powerhungry, hypocritical, manipulative, backstabbing, scary, imposing, power obssessed, warmongering, grudge bearing, sociopathic, delusional, disrespectful and dangerous evil asshole with an entitlement complex, a superiority complex, overwhelming destructive dark magic and a might makes right and survival of the fittest fascist ideology who despises slackers, decadence, laziness peacefulness and incompetence and has a demon beast form with the features of a boar in it's design that is a mirror reflection of his entire character and has obssessions that are connected to his addiction for power, demonic immortality and his evil desires) the demon king title that has always been a part of his character since the first game in the series and lastly his role as the big bad, the puppet master and the force of corruption in the world, the point of his character and the fundamental purpose and inspiration for him as a whole) why he can't and shouldn't ever be a good guy or redeemed.
