I really wish these had been split into two full episodes instead of being sidelined as one singular episode. Especially since plants and fungi each much more diverse than animals are.
@terdragontra890015 күн бұрын
By “more diverse” do you just mean there are more species? Or that the species “vary more”?
@Sylvicolus15 күн бұрын
The animal kingdom has way more species than any other group. Fungi are second. Plants are third.
@peperoni_pepino13 күн бұрын
@@terdragontra8900 Yes to both. You might have noticed how the video didn't even mention bamboo, of which there are some 1400 recorded species. For reference, there are some 6000 recorded mammals. I understand why he gave more focus to species that are closer to humans, but there are a lot of plants out there. Even when staying within the range of human-relevant plants, he could have included the cabbage cultivars (how cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, and quite a few other vegetables are actually all different cultivars of the same species -- so all of them are man-made variations of the same plant. See 'brassica oleracea' on Wikipedia if you want to see a list of all the cultivars). Or he could have talked a little about asexual reproduction in vegetables (as opposed to the sexual reproduction he extensively covered), which is how we get good-tasting bananas (see Wikipedia: vegetative reproduction, root sprouts/basal shoots/suckers). These are just things I can think of off the top of my head. On the other hand, fungi might be a little boring compared to animals, but there are still some 250 000 recorded fungi species in total with many weird ones. Look up the bearded mushroom or the dung cannon mushroom if you want to.
@moroccannerd3510 күн бұрын
As far as I know, we have only documented about 500,000 species of plants and 300,000 species of fungi, but over 1,000,000 animal species (mostly arthropods)

Glad to hear your recovering / doing better. I have enjoyed the series, and all your videos. :). Couple small items I noticed on watching this. When talking about Solanaceae Family / Nightshades, about 12min mark, the circle for the Capcicum Genus (peppers) is not only not even mentioned at all, it is not even CONNECTED to the tree. (Did double check to make sure, and they are Solanaceae... not sure if the actual poster has the connection/line or not? @16:50 when talking about Eurotiomycetes Class, the genus for ringworm/athlete's foot is cut off. Penicillium is visible. The Genus name (Trichophyton) is visible whenyou move on, 17:40, but when you are talking about them, can't see the name...

Really excellent and fascinating as always! I know there are always exceptions to just about any generalisation, but if I were to offer a small quibble, I’d say that contra 13:55, some asterids can get quite large. For instance, species in the genera Brachyglottis and Olearia can grow into trees up to 8m high.

It's quite euphemistic to say the mushroom is the equivalent of a fruit. Actually, since it contains the equivalent of gametes, i.e. spores, it's more like a gonade, i.e. a sexual organ. Therefore, all the people that see mushooms as penises are technically correct from an evolutionary point of view.

@Sylvicolus15 күн бұрын
Mushroom spores are not equivalent to gametes. Mushroom spores germinate and grow into haploid hyphae that then combine in mating together. There is no equivalent in animals.
@lhadzyan73009 күн бұрын
Asterids have flowers with fused petals and other flower-parts, and present more bilateraly symethry on the flowers than just only radial/asterid type. Their ovaries develop UNDER the other flower parts. Rosids have usually the opposite with less fussed petals, less bilaterial symetry, and even lacking flowering parts, and their ovaries develop OVER the other flower parts.

Sometimes you jumped a bit, like when mentioning the pumpkins for their flowers. And is it correct that the brown algae came before the clorophyll? In the chart is was before, you SAID it evolved after....
