I have made a really good progress regarding proportions, shapes, outlines, but when it comes to shading I’m always lost, I’m learning how to tattoo and I know the shading is key to stand out, this is the first time I actually understood how to make a plan and how to develop it. I saw this exact tutorial like approximately few months ago and I just cant thank you enough, I am an artist in digital for around 4-5 years (2024 will mark my 5th year) and this exact shading tutorial just altered my art COMPLETELY. Really I cant, I watched so many tutorials for so many years and this simple 40min shading guide just covering all of that I learned on previously, this tutorial is truthly lifechanging and every, EVERY artist that I will come across in future, Ill send them this if either they struggle with shading or in general need help with art. This is very good. I am taking it forward from the very basic technique I learned from TV modules by an artist called Jon Gnagy, must be over 60 years ago when I was in grade school. That understanding still holds good, but this is far more developed. I always thought I would go back to this when I finally retired from a lifetime of work, and here is all this great instruction on the internet I could never have anticipated, just waiting for me. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction to round out this interest that got lost somewhere in childhood. The kid had some little bit of talent, which is still in there, and now lots of time to play and satisfy the urge to create. Many thanks!

A fascinating and immensely helpful technique for drawing shadows. Your method helps students get right in there. So many are put off by the long structured courses that emphasise stuff like understanding light, form, and anatomy, as well as a meticulous approach to observation and rendering. All necessary stuff eventually but this allows them to dive right in and still produce good results and hopefully get addicted to art.

step 1: divide light from shadow using the line of termination. darken the shadow (val3). step 2: darken the core shadow (darker band of shadow next to the shadow area illuminated by bounce light) (val4) step 3: darken the cast shadow (val5). edge of the cast shadow softens as u go farther from the illuminated object step 4: draw the centre lights (area directly hit by light, the brightest part) and highlights (light that hits the sphere and reflected directly at our eyes) step 5: refinement midtone: area under illumination that's not part of highlights

I’m not throwing shade (pun intended) on the method here, but I contest the number of values you’re using. You shade six, not five. From the lightest: 1. Highlights; 2. Centre light; 3. Midtones (for which you use the tone of the paper in this example); 4. The shading beyond the line of termination; 5. Core shadows; and 6. Cast shadow. It’s no. 4 in my list that’s the unmentioned one. You say it’s “value 3”, but Midtones are value 3. This shading beyond the line of termination is darker than the Midtone and lighter than the Core shadow: A sixth value. An example on white paper would make this clearer, perhaps.

what often gets missing in these shading things is that people forget that both the light and shadow has a lot of values that you can and should play with to indicate form. now the second thing is the inherent value of an object also comes into play, if the object is dark there's gonna be a lot less values or shades of dark in the shadow you can use, but in contrast you have a lot more values or shades in the light if the object is dark in value to begin with, and vice versa for a light value object. the third thing that's kind of interesting about these value structures is that you can make artistic choices where and how defined you want your forms to be, you can be extremely well defined in the values and have a lot of differing values in one area but have less intricate and defined values in another simply to draw attention to a specific area. you can even smudge out edges even the outline of the form aswell, but this might be a bit over the top for beginners but i think it's good to experiment even for a beginner to see what's possible and also make people not feel to hung up on accuracy but focus more on tasteful artistic choices.
