Thank for this, surprised to find this is its only upload on YT. Had this LP in the 70s, got to know the album like the back of my hand. Was very daring and 'worldly' at the time but seems strangely innocent now in modern culture.

Brilliant. Despite his incredible wordsmithary he must of been a nightmare to accompany. First track a fine example of him moving out of the phrase early.... from time to time!! Just to keep everyone guessing he seemed to do it alot. If you hear his original "Freeborn Man" then say Liam Clancy doing it. Such a great work in collating these, thanks! And I agree - both him and Peter Bellamy had this in common, they gave to rhythm something much more organic. I have encountered this in the folksong of some greek villages, by people who have no formal education in music and simply sing the melody as they remember it, a bit "in a hurry" so that there are no gaps in the singing. I wonder if MacColl and Bellamy aimed at imitating something like that.
