I bet there was a little more to it than they’re letting on -- but maybe not remembering. Creative collaborators can get territorial sometimes about who is responsible when having successes. @jon80043 ай бұрын
@@betweenlakes It's cynical to suggest it was about "furthering his career". It could be just about improving the movie. With Leo, the movie would undoubtedly attract more financing, which makes it easier, theoretically, to make the movie and make it good, and for a filmmaker like Boyle, each of these movies is like three years of his life, so it's understandable that he felt, "Well, it's foolish to try and make this with anyone but Leo." The problem is that he probably communicated poorly with Ewan.

I just direct theatre but it is paid work and good tours and the number of actors who I thought were friends who throw a fit if you don't cast them is astonishing. As a director, you want to work with different people. Also, they might not be right for that part or might not be good casting opposite someone else. In The Beach, the character is American for example and Ewan had only played a Scot in everything until that point. Danny should have claimed the studio insisted on Leo as a bigger star. That's what film director usually do to get out of trouble with mates.
@AnyoneCanSee6 жыл бұрын
Well then, in that case, his decision was entirely based on the fact that Leo was a more bankable star. I think Ewan was pretty childish about it. Even if he chose not to use him in "The Beach," "Trainspotting," made Ewan an international star and he went on to make millions thanks to Danny casting him in the lead role.

The fact that both Danny and Ewan are both admitting to the blame and accepting that the other was in the right makes me very suspicious. Either they're both lying and they know that one of them was more of an arsehole than the other or there's perhaps a mixture between the two or it's something else entirely to what they're talking about. I doubt it but I'd like to think it's a mixture between the two, Ewan being a bit of a spoilt brat and feeling jealous of Leo DiCaprio in The Beach, kind of like "well how dare you suddenly get rid of me when I've been the star of every movie you've made and you'd be nothing without me on the front cover!" and Danny being a bit egotistical and thinking "well I'm a big director now and I need to show I can do it without you as my main star, plus it was my direction and my movies that made you a star in the first place so how dare you be upset with me"..it's an interesting conflict but I'm very glad they've seemingly resolved it to make another movie, sadly overdue but if it can be for Trainspotting, undoubtedly one of the best British movies of all time then surely it's worth it..hopefully

By the sounds of it, I'd say the fault really lies with Danny Boyle. He made a promise to put Ewan McGregor in a movie, than later went back on his word simply to appease the studio. Not exactly the end of the world! Ewan McGregor could have been a little more understanding, especially since his career didn't really need any boost at the time. But that doesn't change the fact that Boyle broke his word, which is why he seems to be the most contrite and embarrassed here.
@jasonleetaiwan6 жыл бұрын
@@olivermangham6103 Yeah, it was Boyle's fault for basically screwing McGregor and casting the bigger star and getting the bigger budget to work with. I am sure Boyle regrets what he did given that the film turned out badly anyway. Having said that, these kinds of things do happen on movies. Roles get recast after actors get cast and promised for a lot of reasons. Boyle may have thought he was doing the best thing for the film and his career, but he had to have expected it would break up his friendship with McGregor. If they did not work so closely before, perhaps McGregor would not have taken it so badly. I think Boyle probably should have just gone with his original plan and stuck with McGregor. It may not have saved the film, but I think it would have been a bit more watchable with McGregor even if the budget was reduced. But that was 1999 or so and it was a chance to work with the star from Titanic. Boyle basically sold out and seemed to pay for it twice over by losing McGregor as a friend and business partner and on top of that he made what is generally considered to be an awful film. DiCaprio's acting is awkward in many places despite being a very good actor.

This just goes to show how massive of an ego Ewan McGregor has. You can still tell he thinks he's Danny Boyle's muse or something and that he's only acting remorseful about the grudge for the camera. For Christ sake Ewan. You played the lead in 3 of his films in a row. That's almost unheard of. In any films. It's not the Ewan McGregor show and it would be weird for Danny to have had Ewan play the lead for 4 films in a row. Even 3 is testing it. So I feel it was right for Danny to cast Di Caprio in The Beach even if it was more of a studio decision. Also I feel sorry for Danny Boyle in this interview and he's clearly the one with the real maturity the grace. Also the other lead actors in Trainspotting are much better actors than Ewan. Ewan is more popular just because he became a name due to bigger parts and is clearly an ungrateful narcissistic C word.
