Christensen was originally hoping to play a more serious and dark character, but Lucas insisted on his own vision and ultimately got the performance that he wanted. Lucas wrote the script. He directed the actors. Put them in empty rooms with green screens. He chose the shots and then butchered them in edit. It was all Lucas. He was in control and therefore took the responsibility over everything. Even the performances, because the actors had no say in anything. That's why Hayden Christensen is not to blame for anything.

I believe the crossguard emanates from the same cracked kyber crystal as the main blade on Kylo's saber, which means the little blades don't start at the end of the metal part of the crossguard. They start inside the saber. So if you cut into the metal of the cross guard you'll meet lightsaber plasma underneath. I've also heard the entire reason for the crossguard is to act as vents for the main blade. Because Kylo's kyber crystal is cracked it produces an unstable blade that needs to get some plasma vented off.

Yeah, a co-star for 2 different films in which they worked for months together on fight scenes. Forges a great working bond, regardless of how the public ends up seeing that character and/or actor. As much as I've hated that character for years, I've begun to soften a lot on the actor himself. Hayden performed most of his own stunts, and during Episode 2 when he was 19 he really dedicated himself to the lightsaber combat training. His dialogue delivery was terrible but to be fair the dialogue for him and all the other very talented actors and actresses in that series was poorly written. Natalie Portman is a world-class actress with serious talent, but as Padme she delivers lines like they are ripped from a TV soap. Even Harrison Ford has famously said that the lines the Lucas created read great on paper but were impossible to deliver as an actor. So I can't bring myself to hate the actor anymore (still couldn't tell you something I've really enjoyed of his though, Jumper was TERRIBLE), and would probably be okay with a cameo in the Obi-Wan show if it was done correctly. Especially since I consider Ewan to be a fantastic actor and think he and Hayden could really play off each other given their established on-screen chemistry. (edit: some grammar fixes, but I can't be bothered to fix them all)

There are materials in the Star Wars universe that are highly resistant to lightsaber blades: Beskar and woven Cortosis. Ancient Mandalorian warriors (and some modern bounty hunters) were famous for their Beskar armor that allowed them to go toe-to-toe with Jedi. So there is precedent for a material that would make an effective and safe lightsaber crossguard.

Anyone whose ever done Kendo or fenced saw Kylo's saber and thought "Oh I get it. I admires Darth so much he made that so he could cut his own hand off on the first clumsy back swing." However, they do have a metal that lightsabers can't cut... Beskar. I'd like to see a saber with a beskar hilt (The darksaber sort of has this in a modified katana style).

Dark Hours of Day personally I agree with you, but Obi Wan said it, not me, lol. And to be fair the whole concept of a lightsaber is completely dangerous. I mean in order to cut through metal like butter the way it does it’d have to be so hot that just holding the thing would toast you. And the only possible hilt for a lightsaber would HAVE to be more lightsaber beams, otherwise the saber would just cut through it.

@@darkhoursofday6250 The smartest thing would be to use a blade (cardassian blade maybe? I forget the name) that disables lightsabers as the hilt material. Arguably though it does make more sense to have a hilt rather than none, even if it's hot ass plasma. If you looked at it realistically there's 100s of instances in Star Wars media where it shows two people with lightsabers locked. In all of those instances they could have slid the lightsaber down and cut off their opponents fingers. They just don't.

It's been said many times, but he was really marvelous in the role. The acting was good, but the fight scenes were amazing due to his (and Hayden's) skill. Their relationship (along with the fights) were the best thing about the three movies. Despite mediocre scripts and uninspired plots, he made the movies so watchable. I'm glad he gets another chance at the character in this format so we can see even more from him. Just hope they continue what they've started with The Mandalorian.

Maybe, using a lightsaber during the reign of the Empire was very dangerous. Most of all for Obi Wan with what he had at stake, and it wasn't only the Empire or Vader, but bounty hunters. Jedi would fetch a high price. Though if i had to bet, i think we'll see him kill an inquisitor or maybe face Vader again.

Being a swordfighter myself, those fight-scenes were mostly silly and useless flashy antics. Sadly, Alec's battle was more realistic. Go take some sword lessons sometime and you'll see how goofy the Prequels were in that aspect.

And I like the explanation for the reason why their fight in A New Hope is so different from their last encounter, if you've seen Star Wars Rebels. Maul engaged Ben as if it were about to be similar to a prequel duel, in three moves Kenobi killed Maul. It comes to show how skilled he was, and Vader knew this.

I doubt that there'll be much lightsaber fights, unless they take him to different places, we're talking about a guy who's living in hiding on a giant ball of dust. If he ignites his weapon, I'm assuming it will be in very short bursts and nothing like the elaborate scenes in the prequels. I would love to see more prequel type battles as they were honestly a joy to see and must have been a joy to film, high speed twirling around and swinging a pole seems like tons of fun.

Quillons is another name for cross-guard. Light sabres could do with forcefield basket hilts tho... for non Jedi use of course.

It's really just because Lightsabers are based on Katanas, not longswords. Which is why they don't have cross guards (a hilt is the thing you hold, Ewan meant cross guard)

@@SpoonDude I wouldn't really blame anyone, that implies that it was a poor decision. When it wasn't. Lightsaber combat is based on how Samurai fought. Not how knights fought. Seeing as the Jedi and star wars in general were inspire by Akira Kurosawa's "Seven samurai" the choice was Lucas'. Also just a point, Kylos cross guard wouldn't work either. Because it's not a solid 3 point blade. It's one hilt, with 3 emitters. So if another blade were to clash and was moved down the length of Kylos saber, it would still decimate his hilt and his hand without ever coming into contact with his cross guard. It'd cut through and damage the emitters of the cross guard before it even hit the blades. That's why Kylo uses the cross guard for close combat (like how he uses it against Fin in ep7.) not for protecting his hand. They actually also solve why this doesn't happen in star wars, in an episode of Rebels. Where Kanan teaches Sabine how to use one. And he points out to her to notice how the blades are drawn to eachother. Which is why we don't really see them easily sliding along one and other like you do with regular swords. It's that pull that almost holds the blades in place a little, when they clash.
