My father passd away on April 11th, from COVID-19. He had a stroke two years prior to his passing and he had also been diagnosed with diabetes. The last two years of his life were very painful for him and it hurt me seeing his body slowly deteriorate. The last weekend before him going to the hospital he was crying in our kitchen saying he missed his father. I hugged him and told him that it was ok, to let it out. I'm here for you. I then played him some Pink Floyd songs on my cellphone and Wish You Were Here was one of them. I gave him a hug again and resisted myself from crying. The night before he went to the hospital he told me he thought this was it. He was struggling to breathe and his chest was feeling tight. I think he knew he wouldn't come back. We were in the heart of the pandemic. Queens, N.Y., U.S.A. It was around 3am that my sister was outside our apartment building, waiting in her vehicle for my dad to meet her so he could go to the hospital. We were standing outside our apartment door and he told me to please try and improve my lifestyle. He always worried about me because of my past and current history with depression. I gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. That was the last time we saw each other. My dad was always a loving, generous, kind man. The amount of love and support his friends and colleagues have given following his passing was overwhelming to our family because of how much they loved him. He was always the life of the party. He always made people smile and laugh. He always cared about everyone. He wore his heart on his sleeve. It's now 1:03am and I am listening to your cover because I recently took up drums because I always wanted to be a drummer. I am learning Wish You Were Here among other songs as as my way to honor my father. It's been over a month since my dad passed away and I wish he was here. Until we meet again. Love now and forever. Your blood, your soul, your son. 🌹

I imagine you do indeed wish Dad was here. I had a strange, difficult, and marvelous relationship with my very eeeenteresting mother. I too wish she was here. I hope you’re still drumming. Well, damn. Making it look easy, and clearly having fun doing it. I found this one trickier than it looked at a glance. Nick Mason doesn't seem to do anything the easy way. Man you do killer covers . I am 46 and have been learning drums and guitar for over 30 years on guitar and drums maybe 4 . But I am soooooo stuck. I love to free jam . Time isn’t a issue as far as keeping good time but any fills or wrist movements that are suttle I just can’t get around the curve . Any advice from anyone on progressing to be able to have left hand control and getting to a solid place for fills ?

Your feel on these Floyd covers is perfect Ewan. Mason might not have been the most technical of drummers, but who cares. That sparse, less is more, slightly behind the beat way he played was such an important part of the Floyd sound. I couldn't imagine better drum parts than the ones he played. I'm a drummer that gets great joy from listening to the technical playing of the greats like Porcaro and Gadd but also enjoy in equal measure "straighter" drummers like Mason and Ringo.

Hey Giorgio, thanks for the comment. I don't use any sheet music and usually I can remember each fill just by listening to the song. Using this cover for an example. I had never played this song on the drums before I made this video. However because I have listened to the song hundreds of times throughout the years I am able to remember the fills pretty well :-)

Hi Ewan, this may seem like a strange question, but what drums do you have (like their dimensions), and do you know what each of their heads are tuned to? I've recently picked up a second-hand drum kit and am having troubles with the tuning. Thanks man, keep it up!

Hey! Thanks for the comment. You can read up about the dimensions of my kit here www.gear4music.com/Drums-and-Percussion/Tama-Superstar-Hyper-Drive-22-6-Piece-Drum-Kit-Sugar-White/BD2. As for tuning, my method is just trial and error. First, buy a good set of heads (Evans or Remo) and then just mess about untill you get a sound that you like. There are many videos on KZbin showing good methods of tuning and they are all different! It just takes time to figure it out :-)
