You can wash a motherboard in 91% isopropyl alcohol and dry the board in a low-heat oven to ensure all the components are free of water and deposits from getting wet outside. (100°F for a couple of hours after washing the board with a soft brush and the isopropyl, then blow dry as much as possible with compressed air to ensure all the isopropyl is evaporated before drying in the oven.) I used to work in conformal coating at a "class A" electronics manufacturer, and we would wash the boards after they came from wave soldering, inspiration, and clipping. We did the water, environmental proofing, and adhesives to protect components from being damaged by movement once they were assembled in their final build configuration (we were usually contracted to manufacture the boards and not the whole device) to be as "reliable as possible" . PCs are rarely class A; most consumer-grade electronics are class C. A cool way to tell is with a UV light to check if the board has been sprayed with a protective coating that to the naked eye would look like an automotive clear coat and RTV or epoxy gluing components or sealing the base of connectors to the board as water proofing or to prevent shorts from component movement during designed usage, usually in military and aeronautical and some tel-com and automotive applications, like emergency vehicles and emergency broadcast systems. This info might prove helpful for items meant to go into a collection but have seen water or debris contamination from use or being set out to be hauled away.

Wouldn’t worry much about the motherboard getting wet some retro and vintage restorers put them in the sink or dishwasher to clean them. Before you put it in storage pop out the battery as they do leak and damage the boards

Cool video, by the way: you missed some real silver, gold and platinum metals: the silver is inside the computer keyboard printed at the key mylar, in old keyboards with the "clicking" keys, there is gold inside the keys, it can be a lot! The remote controlls have hidden gold, platinum metals and silver if they are not from china and more PMs if they are older🤑

@lorieakins2843 Жыл бұрын
Scrappers want the cords for copper. It's first come, first serve. Ben usually waits til the day before the garbage is hauled off, so he saves it from the landfill. I'll cut cords too.
@emsamish Жыл бұрын
No one wants dirty vacuums & toasters. Cut the cord and recycle the most valuable part.
