It's the truth anyone who is really in the streets knows what he's talking about. Wether you were responsible for those graves or you witnessed all those deaths it's something that will never leave you. Whatever you do , never lose your soul. You have choices, if it ever comes to that choice or good or evil just walk or run away..you don't want that mark on your soul, no money no drugs or alcohol can ever wash you clean again. And you'll be wondering after nthis life if you'll be seeing your loved ones again in the afterlife or if you'll be going somewhere else..it's not worth it.

A very crucial factor in his life was that his mother was an woman of honour, a person who wanted no part ever in his earnings from crime. I think that kept the seed of morality alive in his throughout his life. Everyone of us needs and benefits from an authentic role model in family and he was fortunate in that. Had his father’s character been similar, he would have had very different life experiences indeed. But better one than none 😔

This dude is a legend. I remember Chango from yellow top crew. Chango did an insane amount of time in prison. That's the crazy part of that life...you have a brief time when you up and a loooong time when you gotta serve time for what you've done. I'm the same age as him and it is a miracle to have survived. I remember the crack war. I remember how aids ran through the hood. I lost 3 cousins and 4 friends to aids because their were either on drugs and selling their bodies or selling drugs and tricking off with the chicks who were selling their body for drugs. It's good to see his remorse. No YTC member died but the initial guy who sold YTC the block and the recipe and introduced them to the game because he was leaving the game was eventually shot and killed by is enemies.

What an intriguing interview! He spoke authentically and his self-reflection skills are rare. He has a lot to offer NOW to impoverished youth and the rest of society providing examples of inclusion, empathy, understanding and compassion. He clearly identified what matters in life and what is an illusion. My viewpoint or takeaway is what really matters in life is the positive relationships we build with one another not the things we acquire. Especially if lead by the EGO.

I look forward to these longer interviews. I knew Chango had intelligence as soon as he started to speak. I very much understand him. I never led a gang but as an old man now never thinking I'd ever say "Now back in my day...." but here I am. I wasn't the best person. My best friend was arrested in 2004 for the murder of a man who he shot and killed on main st in Winnipeg Manitoba right out in the open. I had just left town a month prior to get away from "The Life" and the drugs and got a job and was getting ready to go to rehab. I was deep into something I was naturally good at. Trained since I was 16. In the end, the cruelty bred into me wasn't cruel enough and I didn't want to become a monster as that was what I was becoming. I needed to change. Dominic didnt. He's outta prison now. Not sure what ever happened to him. I'm a better person now for walking away from it all. Now I've got my own set of issues and challenges and perhaps a lot of the negative is the karma coming back at me for the havoc I wreaked on other bad men. Tremendous interview and Chango was a powerful speaker.

I met Chango a couple times. He and my bf had been talking about doing his life story and i was supposed to produce it. So he came to the wrap party for one of our films. A few people there were afraid but i liked him. He was super cool. He and my bf and i had a lot of mutual friends from the Bronx and Harlem. He really loved his mom, i remember that. And if i remember correctly, he had just gotten out like a month before. He also had a crush on my girlfriend. If you’re from uptown, its not uncommon to know an infamous drug dealer and/or killer (i know 3) and EVERYONE who grew up uptown in the 80’s knows many girls who were once nice, sweet, beautiful girls who became crack whores (thats what they were called back then). It’s really sad. Uptown (Harlem, Washington Heights, Bronx) in the mid 80’s through the mid 90’s was the very best and very worst of New York City…it was a movie…the golden days of NY when the streets had crazy money, the club scene was huge, the hood looked like a perpetual car show, all the cops were on the take, you could be anonymous, and it was really the Wild West. But it was also a painful time in those circles because there was at least one funeral every week for someone you knew, if not a few. All those drug dealers and killers back then were a product of their environment. I knew not one but two big drug dealers (one dead) who were on their own from the age of 9 who had to sell drugs to take care of their mom and entire families. People in those hoods were largely really poor and a lot were from Puerto Rico or Dominican immigrants, and just staying alive for a regular square could be a struggle, let alone someone in the life. It was kill or be killed in that world. The kids today are killing each other for nothing, not even money. Just for dumb ish like fighting over what someone said to them on the internet. So many of the young hustlers today are so dumb. The hustlers and drug dealers back when Chango was coming up were all smart. You had to be to survive. And to be from that time in NY and still be alive or not doing 125 to life, you’re on the level of a genius. Oh and NONE of the big drug dealers did drugs. That was unheard of and back then. The people who did drugs back then were looked down upon and it was extremely shameful. Contrast that with today and all the wanna be hustlers and dealers are using themselves.

@@MoAli-wm4of I went through Manhattan as an adult when I was on the run from my hometown. But I was just passing through headed upstate to some chicks house to hideout for awhile. That central station in manhattan is wild tho. Ain't never seen shit like that in my life. Fucking pigeons everywhere. I actually grew up in a tiny urban city called Lebanon in PA. Like I said it's nothing like New York but we had our own fair share of shit going down and addiction ran wild, I was one of those. But one thing I can say about myself as an addict is I never stole from my friends or family. No offense to anyone that did experience addiction like that. I just didn't let it take away my morals. Like it ran my life but I didn't let it take full control. Probably because I never really got into smoking crack or using needles. I was just really bad into opiates. Mostly sniffing dope and pills and popping pills. I quit once I got caught and went to jail for 2 years tho. When I got out I moved to my aunt's house in the suburbs and eventually found a girlfriend in the same town and never looked back. I sold a lot of weed back in the day but I refused to sell harder drugs because I knew I'd never be able to manage having mass quantities of hard drugs being an addict myself and I probably would've ultimately ended up killing myself. That and I seen myself suffering and couldn't do that to someone else. Weed I could manage because I could do with or without it and I knew it really wasn't hurting anyone. I was a criminal but I never really got involved in the gang shit. Just wasn't for me. I'm more of an independent thinker and don't like being told what to do. Not only that but the "gangs" in my city I'm pretty sure were frauds, except for maybe the Latin kings. But I was already cool with many of them because of family ties. I was more the type of person that tried to get along with everyone and he humble. I was suffering on the inside but on the outside most people liked me.

Wow, what a story this man has! Growing up in the Bronx his story telling and accent takes me back to my childhood. Alot of weight is put on a kid, especially the son when the father disappears. He has a gift for story telling and I would read his book. Hope he continues to be a positive force for others like him.

I think he's a great example of what happens if you give someone a 2nd chance, proper respect to him, he should be proud of himself and how far he's come.
