I have flown on them with American Airlines. My dad worked for them. Love the sound of those engines and those big flat propellers. I've never forgotten that sound. Beautiful airplane. Thanks for the post.

Love the Electra. My first airline trip was on one when I was 8. Mom turned me over to a stewardess and I flew unaccompanied to visit my cousin in Lake Tahoe. Holiday Airlines. Made the trip several times, also on Air California and PSA.

SAHSA Air lines received their fleet of L-188s from Eastern airlines, went to inspection to Flight Safety Miami, before flown to Honduras My father was one who signed the purchase documents on behalf of of SAHSA, and a Flight engineer in the type for years. Great memories

First flight in an airliner was with PSA from San Diego to Los Angeles in the late 60's, one of the last aircraft I worked on in the Navy was the P-3C in 2005.

The first Electra I saw was in 1960 when a beautiful PSA ship rolled up to the gate and dropped off my dad. I still remember the sound of the Allison's today. I always wanted to fly one, never had the opportunity. Every pilot I met who flew them said they were great machines. The fact that they're still out there making money for their owners says a lot.

I flew them on the Rio-Sao Paulo Airbridge flights. They still had lounges at the rear. They flew many years without incident and were well loved and fondly remembered by Brazilians.

@@jeffreyanderson1851 Once the flutter issue was resolved airlines lined up for them. I had a battery model of the Allison turboprop engine. It was too cool. Turn it on and you could see all the gears and the engine in motion. I had that thing for years.

As a passenger plane, the Electra was doomed from the start. Three fatal crashes in a little over a year, 1959-60, led to passengers declining to fly on it. Even after the problems were fixed, the jet airliners just going into service wowed the traveling public and pretty much made the airplane obsolescent. My last flight on an Electra was on Braniff Airlines, Dallas to Lubbock, in 1966.

At Coventry airport UK, we used have lots of electras that were used for Spares, in fact Joe and Mike’s from Buffalo Airways in Canada came over and bought one with pallets of spares…Great aircraft way ahead of her time…😊😊

That ship has certainly seen a lot of better days. And I am sure it's pilots have some great stories to tell of still flying that crate down in Africa or South America. Interesting to note on its registration list of previous owners was the State of California Republican Party itself. Can only imagine what occurred on some of those flights when it was flying for them.

The videos of Electras do not pick up the high pitch scream of the engines. It was painful to hear.

Most fixed shaft turboprops had a screech on the ground. The Allisons, also used on the C130, were loud. But when the power came up, the drone of the props was the most lovely purr. I mentioned flying on Electras to visit my cousin in Tahoe when I was a kid. My aunt and uncle lived on Apache Ave, and when landing on 36, the L-188s would turn base to final right over the house. Low enough that the shadow of the wings seemed to go all the way across the yard. And I thought it sounded so cool.

I flew on this hull # aircraft in 1975. I got a call from my mom at about 2 pm Thanksgiving day. She told me to be at Long Beach airport at the executive terminal at 5:00 pm. I arrived right on time, and two minutes later this beast of a plane pulls up. I thought I would met by a Mooney or 310. Flight Eng walked up escorted me far forward of the still spinning props, rounded the nose and number 2 prop was at idle, and entered on a folding light stairway. FE followed me up, and showed me a seat, and disappeared to cockpit. I had barely buckled up, when we pulled away and 30 seconds later made a 180 turn, and immediately full throttle for Take off. The whole exiting terminal to wheels up was about 2 minutes. It had acceleration like a muscle car. Arrived at the McCullough Thanksgiving dinner about 50 mins later in Lake Havasu, 300 miles away. We hauled balls. Vintage cloth curtains on the cabin windows, smelled a bit musty, and the engines were fairly loud, but did have a nice oiiiyo-oiiiyo-oiiiyo-oiiiyo drone too them at cruise. Came back 4 days later on same bird. Impressive plane. Rides I'll never forget.

En realidad la célula es la misma, con variaciones en el P3 para adaptarlos a sus distintas funciones y propósitos y con mayor autonomía gracias tanques extras internos del ala (en el Electra son llamadas "bahías secas"). Motores y hélices son también en algo diferentes. Sucede también con los C130 en motor y hélices (salvo el fuselaje) dispuestos aquellos de diferente forma (la parte superior e inferior están invertidas) Estos motores Allison (División de GM) son turbo ejes, de RPM constantes, con caja reductora, que en el caso de las aeronaves poseen hélice de paso variable de distintos fabricantes, construcción, características y Performances) pero los motores tiene también otras aplicaciones, incluyendo las marinas. El "aullido" del 501 D13 del Electra es bien característico, Los Orión y Hércules suenan distinto. Y para menor ruido en tierra tienen una posición de reducción de RPM (ground idle) y altas RPM para las demás condiciones.
