This is a wonderful commentary from a non-Nigerian. God bless you real good. Problem is that the ruling class have intentionally impoverished the masses such that they can no longer think in the right direction. Unfortunately, when you try to tell them that the politicians are not supposed to be their masters but servants, they'll start calling you names. Poverty is not a good thing and it's the instrument the ruling class are using to perpetually distort the thinking process of the masses. The way forward is orientation and reorientation of the people. Things cannot continue like this forever. Once again, thank you for the sweet words about our beloved country, Nigeria!

As a legal practitioner in Nigeria, I can say that the only reason why we still use wigs is the same reason we still retain several archaic traditions attached to the profession till date. I think the excuse of 'It's to uphold the prestige of the profession' does not make any more sense. No, not in this century. There are several other ways to maintain prestige.

I was thinking lawyers would be more concerned about the rot in the profession, such as justice delayed being justice denied than what lawyers put on in court rooms!What about the open allegations of bribe taking by the Judges up to Supreme Court? What do you have to say about poor pay for the new wigs? Allegations of dubious practices by senior lawyers? Lack of opportunities for junior lawyers? Quick dispensation of justice? Purchase and sale of judgements? Corruption in the process of appointing Judges and Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN)? I think these are all more important than lawyers putting on wigs and gowns for some hours or in some cases, minutes, depending on how long a sitting lasts. It doesn't matter whether lawyers come into court rooms naked provided people have confidence in what they do in court! Judges and lawyers don't put on wigs and gowns outside the court rooms as the military and para military guys do on the streets! What inhibition does putting on wigs and gowns cause for quick dispensation of justice? I think it will be tantamount to treating ringworm at the expense of leprosy for a lawyer to be dissipating energies on wigs and gowns when there are deeper problems in the problem that should be addressed. For instance, recently, we have witnessed courts of coordinate jurisdiction delivering different judgements on the same point of law for different reasons other than law, was it the wigs and gowns that were responsible for the delivery of those terrible judgements? Of course the answer is NO!
