pigeons are raised on farms for their meat, eggs, feathers, breeding, racing, companionship, land management, and income. There are pigeon farmers who raise them for feathers which are very soft. They put them in quilts for winter and in pillows. And they can save the feathers and sell them to others who make pillows and quilts. The meat is very tender and juicy. They kill rodents and eat insects. Some are just there as pets , because they are gentle. Their call is soft and peacefull. They do not eat very much at all compared to chickens.

Everything on the farm, even the cats and dogs have jobs to do. Even the types of flowers planted have jobs of repelling bad insects while attracting bees for pollination. So mostly those jobs are to keep wild critters/insects away from the farm and it's people. Dogs and cats also eat food scraps so they do not attract critters. Water buffalo keep weeds down and can pull a plow in the rice fields. And they give fertilizer as do chickens, ducks, and pigs. Humans and animals and plants partner in survival of each of them.

Did you see the ants infesting the roof of the building they tore down? Imagine those dropping onto a sleeping baby, left by the mother to nap while she is clearing land across the property. My entire leg swelled up when ants attacked me when I was putting liquid tar on our driveway. I am in a city. They are trying to create a farm in a jungle, and free roaming chickens cannot be everywhere to eat those ants. Pigeons can fly onto the roof but cannot get into the nest. Mice can eat ants but it isn't their favorite food. So the people use the smoke of their cooking fire to help keep insects back until the grounds are cleared enough all around the living quarters to keep critters back. Getting the house up on stilts helps a lot.
