​@spragels the worst part about this is those of us who want to play higher skilled/better teammate who also have a life/kids. I consistently hit 1400 rank every season. A lot of seasons I get there in the last 2 weeks as I haven't had time to grind with a job and kids because it puts me at the bottom of expert and I have to play SO MANY bot matches and matches with HORROBLE teammates just to get back to where I was last season, only to do it all again. I just want to play the matches I know I'm qualified for.

They should add a masters rank draft queue which matches you with master ranked players that want to have draft. The rest can use the normal queue (mixed of master and other rank).

Some thoughts I have, but I really wished removing the EX tags and balancing those EX mons properly was a thing at the start so anyone who enjoyed playing those mons aren't restricted from playing them in a season that probits those mons. Personally I like to play Zacian because of the ability to lower its energy for attacks and making goals easier, but I had to pivot to using Blazikin this season and flex pick. I don't mind the EX ban too much, but it sucks that it's a thing that restricts people from playing the mons they like. While I think this should be thought through more and is probably a bad idea, but what if Unite had 2 separate rank mode/toggle with separate ranking. One mode with draft another without draft throughout all ranks.

Yeah, the EX tag is just an excuse to avoid balancing those mons; they’re already profited off them from the events, so there’s no reasons to just give them the nerfbat, it makes pre-Masters a mess, and it makes the issue with unskilled players in Masters even worse since they can cruise on EXs and then be left high and dry.

I'll try to say this as nicely as possible. If you want to one trick a Pokemon whether or not it is detrimental to the team, then don't mess up the people who want a good team. Just play standard, it needs more people anyway. The better thing would be the game making clear explanations of how draft mode works and what makes a good team, but that likely won't happen. I'm thinking about quitting the game for real this time. Unite has this annoying pattern of doing something great for the game to bring new players to the game and old ones back. Then they make these outlandish decisions coupled with some over-tuned Pokemon and pull the player base into pieces. I'm sick of it. All that said, No shade to the people enjoying the game, and I hope the content creators like Spragels keep up all the great work. Instead of draft, they could do a role queue. If you get pulled in as a role, it just doesn't let you choose something else. I don't know if it would work, but they have something similar in other games.

I do think EX Pokemon should feel more powerful than the rest of the roster, but not to the point where they are unfun to play against. I think to some extent, they should feel like a raid boss, but there needs to be reasonable counter-play. I do like their philosophy for EX Pokemon, but I think it is very difficult to do well.

I agree 100% i wouldn't mind seeing EX mons in ranked draft BUT they have to do a better job to balance them i know the point of EX is basically "im stupid strong" but find a way to balance them still make them strong i dont a "oh they have an ex mon and we dont?? Personally as a League player, seeing Unite bring in draft makes me kind of happy. Stability issues aside, now that the roster's gotten to a decent size, being able to ban a couple of Pokemon that you don't want to deal with is awesome. It's kind of ironic to see people complain about how much they hate playing against a Pokemon also complain about the existence of draft mode. It makes it take longer to get into a game sure, but I feel like overall it will make ranked play more enjoyable on average. I think the next step that should be taken is to allow people to queue for specific roles, just like you can in League. This would take away the concern regarding if you'll be forced to play a role you don't want to as 4th or 5th pick.

I hate draft. Always have, always will. It's just so boring. First player picks meta, two opponents pick counters, the next two pick the counters' counters. Once in a blue moon I still get draftless games and it's just so much more fun. Having to adapt to difficult matchups, proving one's worth in mirror matches, these are some of the best things in the game and draft just takes them away. Now, ban phase I can take. I don't like it in concept, but with how many broken things are running around it's probably a good idea to have it. As for the return of ex mons, I'm not even slightly concerned. I will still 100% ban Umbreon or comfey over any ex.

I’m not sure why people are complaining about these changes so much. Personally I hate draft because, as the highest rated player on most teams I’m in, I’m forced to first pick a defender because if I don’t, my team can easily just not pick a defender and then we basically just lose because our team comp sucks. First pick lets you pick the strongest Pokémon so the enemy team can’t get them but if you don’t own them or wanna play them you don’t get to participate in the while strategizing thing draft allows. You don’t get to ban or counterpick and you just have to pray your solo queue teammates do that part. As for EX Pokémon, I think they’re all just pretty good right now, aside from Miraidin’s electro drift, I think they’re fine rn, not super broken or anything.

Nah, still better than blind pick. Getting to ban the most broken stuff is one thing. Being able to adjust picks and builds as per the opponent picks has helped me gain a much higher ranked winrate than I usually do. Btw, a few rare times, allies request to swap places. If you don't like being the first pick, you can allow them to switch with you. That way you'd atleast be able to counterpick the opponents.

Skilled player will always find a way to choose most optimal pick, draft helps a lot to strategic thinking, because you can see ehemy team composition, which help you to decide what build will work best. I got 77% winrate this season and got to 1700 master because i could plan ahead before a match. In blind pick you can shoot your foot without even realising what enemy has chosen. Example: you pick decidueye as first pick and pick jungle. You see enemy toom 4 bulky pokemons, so it doesnt make sense to play shackle, you pick razor leaf with different held items and bam, you are in the game with better build, which helps your team a lot in late game teanfights.

I think they should add more queue options in ranked. 1- add a dial similar to the “1-3 queue or 5 queue” but for “draft or standard”. This fixes the issue with people not wanting to play one of the game modes all of the time. Ppl who know how it work and who are prepared to play it will play draft and those who aren’t/don’t won’t. 2- add a dial for all ranks that is “‘more ranks’ or ‘*insert player rank* only’”. This then, add draft to all of masters and ultra. This will allow ultra players who would like to experience it to play it- while allowing masters players to play draft with a friend of a lower rank and help them climb if they want- while also allowing for different Solo-queue experiences by making it so masters can only match make with masters to have more experienced players- while other ranks can only match make with their rank if they choose so they don’t get higher-ranking players destroying them but don’t get lower ranking players holding them back. I think think just giving the players options would solve most of the problems talked abt in this video while improving the health of the game. Also, people who want to play the game like it’s Casual… don’t play Casual. They just play Ranked. Ranked is SUPPOSED to be the “separation between people who want to play a more serious, competitive game of unite” but instead it’s a clown show and nobody plays standard so it’s impossible to take a new Pokémon and try it out and try to learn it without demolishing your win rate because your only option is ranked

I'm of the opinion that draft is overall good for ranked, but isnt necessary for casual. Maybe more players would play casual if all ranked matches had draft. I guess the thing about the tutorial is that yes, that can happen, but unless the player is actually illiterate (which, to be fair, is likely a good portion of the playerbase) that they should be able to learn what happened and avoid it in the future. We cant expect a moba of all things to constantly hold our hand, even if it so desperately wants to be "the casual moba" Draft feels like the least of my worries when it comes to "players aren't ready" mechanics. Items make me more worried about how many people I still see several years later having no good effect on their chosen pokemon. If we want a hand-holdy moba, then it should say "hey, your decidueye doesnt use special attack ever. Lets switch off that special attack goggles." Or maybe even just a pick rate/win rate per item on the item page. Or, you know, making ranked not a farming sim where your rank is based off free time rather than actual skill level. Bad players get so so carried. Out of all the frustrating parts of unite, I feel like draft is just a small blade of grass compared to the forest of design and conceptual issues, even disregarding optimization and bugs and balance. Its amazing that this game breathes.

If they would just reverse the picking order, then everybody wins. Low MMR players can pick the awful mons they're gonna pick anyway instead of somebody taking it away from them, and higher MMR players can make more informed decisions on picking based on the ally and enemy lineup. As for draft taking too long, I see two solutions that would help. First, allow players to pre-pick bans, similar to how Dota 2 does it. Then, when the match loads you tally all the ban votes and pick the top 4 to ban. That will allow us to skip the ban phase of the draft altogether, that's 1 minute saved. Next, allow players to have multiple item build loadouts similar to the emblem system, per pokemon. This will reduce the need for a long preparation stage before the match starts cause players will no longer need to search through the held item list to look for curse items, stacking items, etc that you normally switch up depending on the team/enemy lineup.

Easy fix: with your pokemon specific setup, they include a spot to put two pokemon to ban. If the first one is already banned, then it uses the second, you jump into a game and the two players that ‘banned’ Pokemon, those Pokemon will be greyed out. Then it’s just you picking Pokemon except you can see what the other team is locking in. Once you lock in you are locked in for the game

The solution to having a game where a player can play whatever they want, in a fast match, is already in the game: standard and quick matches. Because of that, i find hard to consider those arguments to not engage with the systems of the game. There's the problem with the care Timi put in those game modes (in fairness, they lack care in all game modes), but that seems like an issue that don't excuse people from not playing the game as a team member, or simply refuse to play the match if something doesn't go their way.

I think you can continue to say "boot up the game" because it takes like 2 minutes to load, connect and log in. The way i see it, "boot up" entails a waiting period for it to load.

The biggest problem with draft (imo) is how insanely laggy the menu is. You can see about 25% the time the first ban pick can't choose anything because it takes like 20 seconds for the draft ui to load. And when it loads it's still insanely laggy to navigate. The final prep phase could also easily be shortened to 20s or so not 45s.

I think it would be cool if ranked had a random 2 min objective. They let the bottom objectives cycle to the point where you have to see which Reggie it is. So why not switch up the middle to keep games interesting. Like one game it's ray then you could play another and see zap or art? Would make for a more diverse game experience instead of the same feel every game Would also like to see a bonus for playing a pokemon. In smite you can get access to different skins when you get them to rank 5 and 10. I think it would be cool to see a similar system for unite. I mean it would be awesome to see the actual shiny skins in the game instead of the sparkles..

I perfectly agree with your reasoning for EX Pokémons. It makes no sense to have them in the game when you can't see them in "real" play (high ranked and competitive). They should be playable, but balanced. I get it that in main games and in VGC competitive play Ubers are objectively stronger, but this is a MOBA and it has to work as a MOBA. If we wanted to complain about main game inaccuracies we would need to have things like type advantages, which we don't because it wouldn't make any sense

All they have to do is make EX pokémon balanced. They could make them have mechanics tied to aeos energy (like Zacian). Make these pokémon only become powerful when, you know, properly playing the game instead of pushing the funny button 100 times per match. I'm a big fan of Mewtwo and Miraidon, but the gameplay doesn't feel like them. Mewtwo X should be this defender/all-rounder hybrid depending on its state (normal or mega). Mewtwo Y could have been a ranged defender/all-rounder hybrid using the same mechanic. Make Miraidon a ranged/close-ranged hybrid attacker making use of its mechanics, not a funny laser dragon with some meteors sometimes. Zacian could be this incredibly hard, but rewarding pokémon. I also feel like players are either clueless or ignorant on the game's mechanics, like breaking goals, catch-up experience, overcapping. This could be taught through a ranked tutorial, which also could include draft. I know that some players want to avoid draft or don't love participating in it, but with the current playerbase, there is no way to make separate modes, as matchmaking would not have enough to draw from to consistently match players near eachother, as result bad connection and lag. The playerbase first needs to become bigger (by making EX pokémon legal and actually fun, instead of haha funny button) to allow ranked to be fixed and draft to be actually fun and functioning. TLDR; Make EX pokémon actually fun and forever legal -> playerbase bigger -> draft and ranked can be fixed-> everyone happy:) (By the way, nice vid Spragels, let's hope it won't be another Miraidon or Mewtwo WHYY meta again)

A lot of games have a role selection before they enter the draft mode support,speedster, attack, tank. it should be required that you pick a specific player type first like League of Legends. If you want to play one of those more popular roles like an attacker or speedster, you’ll have to wait in a longer queue. I think this will help with people just picking nonsense, Pokémon.

League of legends also bans 5 champions per team and when you que up you also know what role you are going to be in and not have to get put in a role you don’t want to play. A role based rank system is really nice to have.

10:30 I acctualy hate EX pokemon as a concept. I was content with legendaries as neutral bosses that you need to defeat with your team. Making legendaries platable break my imerssion (i never use them in main game). Then I basicly gods of pokemon world. When I see little bulbasaur and pikachu KOing mega Mewtwo, because he overextended looks silly to me. Legendaries are not good for MOBA, they either are OP feel like legendary, but ruin balance, or are balanced and dont feel like legendaries. But its just my 2 cents, I know that many people love their legendaries and it brings them happines (and devs money).

My suggestion on the recent survey: There should be two ranked modes. Casual should be renamed standard, and operate as ranked currently does. Ranked should be renamed draft mode, and draft pick should be implemented in all ranks (add a tutorial). This is such a simple solution that would make everyone happy, and it would improve the player base for "Casual" (also incentivising, giving similar rewards and backgrounds/stickers that are distinct from "draft mode" stickers). Timi, why do you keep breaking our hearts? 😭 TLDR: WHY NOT BOTH?!

As a League of Legends player, the draft goes around 3-4 minutes and the actual game usually goes between 30 and 40 minutes. Also, you can only FF games after 15 minutes in League so its DRASTICALLY different to Unite 👍

I disagree with the draft taking too long. Sure, compared to the 10 minutes a match is played, draft appears like a bigger time consumption than it does in league. However, it is exactly because the matches dont take nearly enough time like a league match that you should have the time to spare for a mere 3 minute draft. You can play almost 3 Unite matches, including drafts, in the time it takes to complete a lol ranked match. I seriously think that players have the time for a short draft in unite, and if not, go play quick matches instead

Also, if some people don't care for draft, they simply shouldn't be in master rank. If you can't play a competitive game in a competitive way, play a different mode or game altogether. Players in league don't necessarily have to draft either, they can go play blind pick and tear at each other's throat because everyone wants to go jungle

I personally still think it would've made more sense to just leave legendary Pokemon to be map objectives and not playable. At least for box art legendaries like Ho-Oh and Zacian. I can kind of see "lesser" legendaries like Suicune and Zapdos fitting in with the playable cast of Pokemon, but the big time legends just feels weird and doesn't make much sense. Sure maybe it doesn't have to make sense and all pokemon can just be balanced better, but it's still going to be weird seeing Pikachu go toe to toe with an Arceus or something silly like that. And it's not going to FEEL like Arceus if it happens to be the worse Pokemon in the game or even middle of the road. There's over 1000 Pokemon to choose from. There's so many fan favorites and strong Pokemon that could still be added to the game, that aren't legendary, and that people would love to play. As well as some maybe forgotten about Pokemon that people might learn to love through this game, like Greedent and Falinks. So I don't think the game would be hurting any by NOT adding big time legendaries as playable Pokemon. They also could've made it a separate game mode/event where you can play as legendary Pokemon so that people who love them could still get some play as them without breaking the ranked experience.

Hot take but I think moving draft back to 1400's is a good idea.. It's really not that hard to get to quickly, and most casual players that don't play daily will take a lot longer to get to 1400 vs the hardcore competitive side that will reach it pretty fast. In the last season, what few draft games I had were exceptional. People knew what exp share did, there were no shell bell greninjias, junglers never stopped their rotations and people didn't blow their game changing unite moves 20 seconds to Rayquaza only to then get KOed anyways. But all of that just vanished this season. If I'm going to spend 3-4 minutes in draft then I want that time to be spent with players that actually care to create a strong team that counters enemy picks and not the three stooges with their exp share Cinderace, leftovers Charizard and choice specs Decidueye. It's just such a shame match making in Masters is so broad that even if you're 1600, you'll be matched with 1200 players constantly :(. That's the biggest issue that prevents 1400+ draft from being great imo.

EX is understandable if annoying, they really should just balance them better. At least it's limited to 1 per team so no Mew2+Zacian+Miraidon nightmares Draft moving back to 1400 is whatever, I saw almost no match quality difference between it and non-draft besides broken Mons being blocked and no mirror picks If anything, Draft has felt worse at 1200, at least at 1400+ the players typically felt slightly more competent

I play Mr mime. i will always try to pick mime in draft. Had an "ally" in 4th slot, pick the 4th attacker, and then tell me to pick a defender. So of course, i didn't.

I think they really should incentivize people to play the Standard/Casual mode more. If you try to get a match in that mode, it's often a ghost town and after a minute passes it'll put you into a bot game and nobody likes those. It would help take some of the more casual players out of ranked, put more rewards up for grabs that would get people to keep playing the game, and you'd have a permanent home for EX pokemon.

What? If you like a pokemon and dont care, just play in casual match. Same thing about EX pokemon, you can still play it on casual or quick games. This is what players doesnt understand, if you want to enjoy only one pokemon, you can do it even outside ranked games. EX pokemon should be allowed on ranked but only 1 per team, i think this change should happen this season imo. The only thing i would do is adding 1 more ban only for EX pokemon. That means 1 EX pokemon and 2 bans on the non EX pokemon. The major complain about buffs and nerf, when you release a balance patch, you cant know right away how much would change the game and draft is a good thing to solve this issue. I absolutley agree, we need a tutorial on draft, is so dum that they introduce a new mechanic in the game without a tutorial... why? It feel miserable because you think, this developers dont even try to make the game better, they add something new and they not even explain it? Its like selling something but who is buying didnt know anything about it. Draft in ranked is very important because blind pick doesnt make you win the game especially if a pokemon got over buffed like ttar. Immagine not play draft and see ttar against you without not having it in your team. Blind pick make it play mirror matches more likely and isnt fun to play at all. I think is still a good step in the right direction but i think they have to make more mendatory advance tutorials because master rank is so easy to reach, isnt impossible you getting players that has less than 1k games or even duo/trioq with an ultra. How you can blame players that play leftover drain crown, if the game doesnt even explain stats, held items and specific tutorial on how to use pokemons. The lack of knowledge in this game is what making the game experience frustrating to play, there are players that dont wanna learn the game? Just force players to make tutorials just to give an idea on how to play. I dont care if people choose 2 attackers 2 speedster but at least they play it correctly or having knowledge about it. When you see scizor that is moving randomly or a greninja that is pushing in an area goal against 4 players... how to farm experience how to secure the objective, when push into an area goal or defending an area goal. The player base need knowledge about the game otherwise the game experience would be always the same.

Honestly I like draft. I've only lost about 2 games of it the entire season AND IM A OWL MAIN. Legit my last game we had solid bans, I even use owl despite how bad it really is and won our match in a landslide. My only complaint is matching with bad players who don't have a clue and choose bad pokemon and don't know how to use them or bad set of items then throwing the whole match for everyone else. That goes for all ranks not just masters. Sometimes I see how bad our teammates are and I know from the beginning we loosing no matter how good the good players are. You can't carry your team if three of them think leftovers or special attack item on the physical attacker is good.

I think the problem with Unite is that there is no true competitive mode. Yeah sure ranked is technically the competitive mode, but everyone just treats it like a normal mode because there was nothing to separate it from the normal mode and "Ooo I get prizes if i play this mode." If draft had been implemented across all ranks from the get go in ranked this would have never been an issue because there would have been a clear distinction between casual and competitive, and Timi really fucked up by not setting that separation early, and now the water is all muddy with a bunch of casual players playing the "competitive" mode because that's just what everyone plays, normal mode is a ghost town. They should really bite the bullet and implement draft across all ranks to have that clear divide that it's the competitive mode even if it splits the playerbase, if you wanna have fun playing all the broken things, go play normal. Timi is trying to have their cake and eat it too, and it just sucks for everyone involved.

Yeah, season 20 will probably be a bust for me. Adding OP-EX, & moving draft's range again, is gonna mess up the climb. Draft should be polished, and put in EVERY ranked game. Unite just isn't built to be competitive.
