I don’t blame those who are making sarcastic remarks about the great Benin Empire and the royal house of the great Benin kingdom, I blamed the governor of Edo State for his systematic disregard of the Benin cultural heritage and the traditional norms. However, what is democracy? It is by the people and for the people. Certainly, democracy is not by sharing money or bags of rice to influence voters. Also, it is not by manipulating elections results or by manipulating judicial systems decisions to grab power. Instead, it should be based solely on free and transparent outcomes. It is sad that the country is still fixated in the 1960 ways of manipulating elections. However, we did not agitate for democracy in Nigeria for governors to wage war on traditional institutions.

From Kumasi, the powerful Asantehene of the Asante empire had controlled most of modern Ghana and some parts of Ivory coast and Togo. What about the Songhai empire? the Mali empire? Even here in Nigeria there was the Sokoto caliphate and the Sultan of Sokoto controlled the whole of Northern Nigeria and parts of Niger republic. All the Emirs in the North even till today still view the Sultan of Sokoto as their overlord. The Oyo empire dominated Yorubaland and a major part Benin republic. The only part of Yorubaland Oyo didn't preside over was the Ondo, Ekiti and Lagos areas. How can Benin be the oldest in Africa? Even in Nigeria it's not because your Oba's ancestors went to Benin from Ife. Which means the Ife stool predates the Benin stool. Your Oba should have said Benin is one of the homes of culture in Africa and not the home of culture because as I have pointed out many Kingdoms and empires flourished in Africa, long before the colonial era. Wrapping up, there was no kingdom in Igboland because our ancestors believed that all men are equal and no man should serve the other. Even in that republican system we the Igbos were never dominated by outsiders up until the British came.
