One thing I like to do is take off the oil cap and look down into the cylinder head, if possible. You can see if the car has had frequent oil changes. Also, inspect the oil cap. If there is moisture or condensation on it and it looks suspect, it probably has a blown head gasket. Definitely check for oil leaks, transmission leaks, any leaks period. A lot of dealers will sell you something with problems and if you don’t speak on it they won’t either.

Matter of fact I have never been able to see down inside an engine through the oil cap even with a flashlight. So please tell me how you manage to see frequent oil changes through the oil cap hole.
@kahlildr2 жыл бұрын
@@udontnome I said, if possible. I can name a few engines/cars that you’re able to see the inside of the cylinder head (which is where the oil is being poured). For one, Chevy Vortec engines (LS motors) and some Honda vehicles. I drive a Honda Accord and you can easily see down into the cylinder head. If it hasn’t been maintained, there could be sludge.

Good advise. I also always check under the oil fill cap to make sure that it does not look milky, which can be a sign of a weak or blown head gasket. I always smell the transmission fluid dipstick if it has one to make sure that it does not smell burnt, and I look for metal shavings to make sure that the transmission has not had any previous issues. I then test all of the electronics and features of the car including the A/C and heat.

Some things you didn’t mention. Tires, check the DOT code in the case of this video, one of the tires had a date of 06/19 which means at the time of the video that tire was 3 years old. Don’t know about the other since it seemed they were mixed matched. Obvious possible accident damage. Over spray on molding, trim pieces,tires and exhaust pipe. Driving, if the car shakes violently upon stopping. The front rotors are warped. If you hear a grinding noise when braking is applied the car need brakes, the same if you hear a squeaking noise when the car is rolling, that’s the brake pad indicator warning. Check to see if the car it cold upon approaching it, if so check underneath for leaks. If the is warm it could have been moved to a clean spot. Just a few things to add to this video.

Good summary, but FIRST, show up without telling the seller you’re coming & look under the car for fluids puddled under, or drops on underside; Oil, transmission, coolant. If you tell them you’re coming, they’ll move the car & clean off fluids. Look at the oil cap & dipstick & check for any coolant/water. We found a Jeep with an oil pan gasket leak & made the dealer replace it. Wiper blades & tires are wearable items & they probably won’t replace on a used car.

@bernieschiff59193 жыл бұрын
I Agree, a Carfax inspection found a windshield crack on a used car that I had missed, it was low down at the edge of the glass by the wipers, the dealer claimed he didn.t know it was there either. Would never pass inspection, and new windshield, that would have been expensive. Also a good idea to have a independent mechanic look at it before you buy.
