The man is an asset to the right people and a nightmare to the others! I ETS'd over 30 years ago just after Desert Shield and at 57 I'm still fit. Diet and staying busy is the key along with physical activity. Stay off the couch and don't eat frickin Donuts every day. Thing is, I don't feel like I've missed anything being disciplined with my life. My brother in law is two years older than me and he is a hundred pounds overweight, medically Retired and suffers from Diabetes and severe coronary artery disease with cardiac bypass. Me.... I take BP meds, lipitor for cholesterol, 5'8" 155lbs and I do cardio and weights three days a week and work like a beast in between. Stay strong Nick!

Many of us Veterans got out, lost our way, and have struggled ever since. Maybe we believed our military service was the end all and the be all of our life allowing it to define who we are. Erroneous thinking for sure. I pray this interview with Nicholas will inspire Veterans to get up off our butt's and start living again. Peace!

Army combat veteran here, did 2 tours...1 in Iraq and 1 in Kosovo a year deployment each. The VA really helped me out after I reached out for help. Like Nick alluded to, there should be a warm hand off from the military after you're discharged to the VA. In case you're not aware, the VA and DoD are completely separate government agencies and it's pitiful the lack of communication they have with each other. It's like comparing the DOJ ( FBI, ATF etc) to the DHS (Coast Guard, TSA etc) similar but totally different. The military (DoD) fucks you up and the VA is trying to unfuck you with miminal to zero help from the DoD. I didn't know shit about the VA and learned to navigate it about 7 years after I left the Army with the help of fellow Veterans I met randomly. The VA saved my life and it's a super useful resource after you learn how their system works. I actually was hired and worked at the same VA for about 5 years as a GS11, got my MBA for free using another program different than the Post 911 GI Bill. The VA is like giving an iPad to a caveman... It's useless unless you teach the caveman how to use it, but once taught, it's a great tool. The military needs to do a better job in helping veterans navigate through the VA system BEFORE they're discharged.
@marvinedwards70117 ай бұрын
Great point, I was an in-service recruiter and briefed Soldiers as they separate...I can see how 3 days of VA information could be a big help.
