I was not at all surprised by the first cut down to five instruments. The “American 1920” jumped out at me just like it did to you, and I knew it would make the final cut. The “French 1927” was more subtle; it grew on me by the end, but I don’t know that it would have made my top two. I didn’t pick up on the problem with the sound post, but I definitely heard the difference after it was corrected. It is gratifying to me that my ears are still good at age 52! Thank you for making this video. What a tremendous resource you are to your student in helping him or her choose like that!

I pretty much chosen the same violins as the final 5, then 2 out of 3 as your top 3 choices, and my favorite is the warmer of the final 2.

I enjoyed this so much. I am like you, very sensitive to every nuance, and need lots of time to evaluate between many choices. You could make this video an hour long and I wouldn't mind. Never feel like you're boring us! I personally LOVE instrument shopping with you. Thing is, I'm shopping for a viola! But this was fun. :)

😎Well, it took a while for you to get there, but I think you picked out a couple of good ones.. I preferred the French violin’s warmth and laid-back sound for my own personal use, but the more aggressive sounding violin was very cool too, especially for soloists. My “problem” with the whole upgrade process is that the violin family is a side interest, so I couldn’t see myself dropping 7k or 8K (add bow) on a violin, viola, or cello. I have inexpensive student violin and viola, and as much as I’d like to have a higher quality versions of each, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to justify that, but it is an interesting and exciting thought. Upgrading strings and bows, combined with the care of a reputable violin shop, has been carrying me thus far; and luckily for me, I don’t find their tone to be all that offensive, but I do know that a significant upgrade would be beneficial in the long term if I keep at it...🥳👨🏻

Very worthwhile to see and hear. I was lucky enough to be working in Shanghai for a few weeks and tried out a number of potential instruments. One was exceptionally responsive and wanted to produce music for me with ease without being at all expensive. I also bought a very unique semi-acoustic electric violin and a very fine sounding viola using a similar procedure. But it was later with the strings I selected and great sounding bows when they really came to life :) Violin and Viola are 5th and 6th instrument types for me. Steve

22:26 - these fine tuners on every single string..... wow, that's ALMOST like changing the soundpost or using a different bow. Did you know that [the best] tailpieces are actually "tuned" to match the violin's top and back plate? So basically, putting on 4 metal tuners is just going to mess everything up in terms of harmony..... You MIGHT get lucky if you use a tailpiece with integral fine tuners, but that's still a little bit of a gamble. All the best.... I just hope you can tube with pegs though. Even then - you might want to swap out rosewood for ebony pegs, or even ebony for boxwood pegs. The violin is REALLY sensitive that way....

Always remember that you should ensure that the instrument fits first; I have been learning for 4 years and new tutor has advised that a full size was too big . Even the two shops that sold me full size did not advise that it was physically impossible for me to use correctly

1:15 - music teacher vs. knowledgable person.... sometimes you can't have one person be both. I happen to be a luthier/ collector/ performer/ university graduate in performance for viola (and violin as my second instrument) / teacher..... and yes, it's unfortunate that some teachers just point students in the direction of a music store that makes the most money and they get their students to buy from there and also make a cut of the profit. That's quite a shame. I, however, have integrity, and I look out for my students.... I know some students who have tried out some violins that were $5000 yet they *struggled* to find such money and they REALLY wanted to save up for this sort of violin.... yet they found violins that were merely $1100 - $1300 or so and sounded much better on these violins. I told them to go for these violins since they sounded just great on them. They're (older) students, and they didn't need something outrageously priced!

Fun video. Are these new violins or used? Typically i've always bought a used violin because they've been played in and have an open sound whereas new ones you have to play a lot to get the gist of how it will sound. With a new violin I typically tell the students I work with if they get a brand new violin to wait a few months before buying a new bow so they can see how it opens up. To answer your question my favorite strings are Vision Titanium Solo and Larsen II Cannone. For my cello I use Thomastik Superflexible for my viola I use pirastro obligato or tonica
@guntherschill58812 жыл бұрын
… Good String choice! Thomastik-Infeld, Vienna, Dominant would be a Good Choice, too! Thank you!
@vanessaebony5292 жыл бұрын
@@guntherschill5881 I used Dominant in the past they’re okay but I didn’t like them. They just don’t sound the same to me anymore. A good alternative is Pirastro Tonica and the Larsen in the light blue the original they are warm but with a cleaner crisp sound. Plus I’ve been weaning from Thomastik because they’ve been raising the prices for their strings and you can get good ones for less. So for dominant they are now $75 a set in the US the best alternative is Pirastro Tonica they have a cleaner sound and are $45. A good alternative for Rondo and titanium solo are the Larsen cannone they are more brilliant like Evah pirazzi and have kick cost $85

Sorry ,I don't mean to be critical but that is part of the problem with viol instruments , $ 6 - 7,500 for a student's instrument. I play a different type of musical instrument (electric Bass and guitar) $7500 would be a custom shop instrument much more then needed as a professional instrument. The expense viols are keeps me from getting one. The 20s American one sounds fuller / projects more.
@ViolinViolaMasterclass2 жыл бұрын
understandable!
@vanessaebony5292 жыл бұрын
Well from the video these instruments were from 1920s so typically older violins will cost more. You can get a basic student violin for 500-1200 and then upgrade once you've advanced as a player
@michaelblaney44612 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking more about viola , 5-600 would be do able 1200 would be a little too much right now . are the stendor instruments ok.
@vanessaebony5292 жыл бұрын
@@michaelblaney4461 so like violins violas ranging from 6000-7000 those are typically intermediate advanced violins. For a viola depending on where you get the viola depends on a lot. You want to get from a place that specializes in orchestral strings. YOu may also want to inquire with the shop if they have used violins. 600 some starting prices but take into consideration when you buy an instrument for the first time you're going to need strings, shoulderrest, bow, instrument and case.
