This is all fine and dandy technology, there's no question there. However, the crop still needs fertilizer in the ground to produce the yield. Starter fertilizer in this case is a phosphorus fertilizer. Simply cutting back and saying 60% reduction in fertilizer will have the crop scavenging the soil and mining out phosphorus. At some point more fertilizer will need to be applied. Having a steady stream allows for more fertilizer to be applied, without increasing the toxicity to the germinating seed. Phosphorus also doesn't move very much when placed in the soil. Therefore, it will be available for the plant while it comes in and out of the labile pool. Ultimately what may happen is that the farmer will cut back at the time of seeding, and after a few years will realize their phosphorus levels in the soil are depleting and causing a yield drag. They'll then apply a large broadcast application of dry fertilizer, wishing they hadn't of cut back earlier. Again this is very neat technology, but it's not very practical in the overall system.
